All kings of Israel were bad kings who oopposed God. They didn’t have Jerusalem and the house of God and the priests. They built their own high places so the Israelites wouldn’t go to Jerusalem. The kings of Israel were afraid of their people leaving them.

David was a shepherd so he had a simple life. Then he had to struggle against Saul to survive and he learned how to rely on God and obeys his laws he always kept. He had many wives and concubines but he wasn’t enough so he became an adulterer and then a murderer by killing Bathsheba’s husband as he didn’t get intercourse with his wife who was pregnant.

Solomon could follow the good example of his father and he builds the house of God. He asks God for wisdom but it doesn’t help him because of all his foreign wives and concubines who influenced him to follow other gods and go away from God. That’s what we call free will. Really a pity.

So in general, a king is good and follows God because of his father or somebody’s else influence. It’s clear for David and Solomon. Now we are going to look for the good kings of Judah to see their precise good influences in the 2 Chronicles starting with Asa.

Asa starts by destroying everything which is against God’s worship (foreign altars, high places, sacred pillars and sacred poles). But he does much more than that: he tells Judah to search for God and to observe the Law and the commandment. When he is attacked by the Ethiopians he asks God’s help and God defeats them. All the time God sends his prophets to repeat what is going to happen if Judah searches God or abandon him. For a long time Israel kept away from God, without priests and God’s law. So Asa cleans all Judah from idols. And they make a new covenant with God. But the high places are not removed from Israel.

But Asa does not rely completely on God because when Baasha, the king of Israel starts to build Ramah to prevent anyone from going to Judah he sends money to the king of Syria to free him from Baasha instead of calling God for help. God tells him that he acted foolishly and ther will be wars against him. And Asa gets offended against God’s man and puts him in prison. And he starts to mistreat people. Then he gets health problems with his feet. Once again he turns to healers instead of God. And he dies. Once again power leads to stupidity.

Jehoshaphat has a good example with his father. He follows the example of David and keeps away from the Baals. He also follows God’s commandment. He even removes the high places and the sacred poles from Judah. So he goes beyond his father. Moreover, he sends princes and priests to teach in the cities of Judah the book of God’s Law. Jehoshaphat becomes stronger and stronger. He continues building fortified places and storage cities and extensive projects in the cities of Judah. He has riches and glory in abundance. When he foes with the king of Israel to fight against Ramoth-gilead, he wants to ask God through his prophets. Most of the prophets are positive but it’s a trick from God because he wants Ahab to die but one says that he will die. But Jehoshaphat returns safelyto his own house. But God is angry because Jehoshaphat helps the wicked king of Israel Ahab. And he sends judges to judge in the cities of Judah and he asks them to have no injustice, no partiality and no bribe-taking. Hen the Moabites and the Moabites and some of the Ammonim go to fight against Jehoshaphat. And all the jews gather to inquire of God who tell them to go against them butb they won’t have to fight. God will do the job. And the Jews sing praises to God. God fight for the Jews and their enemies start to fight against each other. And the jews sing more praises to thank God for the victory. But Jehoshaphat makes an alliance with king Ahaziah of Israel, who acts wickedly. So God is angry and prevent their ships to go to Tarshish. So Jehoshaphat gets into troubles because he associated with two bad kings of Israel. This is a warning for us because if we behave properly we can get into troubles by associating to the wrong people! So we must better be careful!

Jehoash becomes king when he is 7. He follows God through the influence of the priest Jehoiada who chooses two wives for him. It is his desire to renovate the house of God. So he collects money for that from all Israel. But the levites do not act quickly. So Jehoash has to organize everything. So the house of God is restored. When Jehoiada’s death the princes abandon the house of God and begin serving the sacred poles and the idols so God is angry against Judah. And they don’t listen to God’s prophets. So God sends Zechariah the son of Jehoiada the priest. But Jehoiada forgets the loyal love of his father Jehoiada and Jehoiada’s son is killed at the king’s order. So the Syrian army comes against Judah and gthey kill all the princes and Jehoash is killed by his servants. So once again we see kings with short memories and they end turning their backs from God and they pay for it.

Then Uzziah (Azariah) becomes king and he follows his father’s example following God. He is taught by Zechariah how to fear the true God. God helps him to win many victories. He builds a strong army. But when he becomes strong, his heart becomes haughty and he starts to go against God by burning incense on the altar instead of the priests. So the priests courageously opposed him but Uzziah becomes enraged and he gets leprosy and he remains a leper until his death.

Hezechiah follows God like David. He renovates the house of God. And he tells the priests to remove everything that is impure from the holy place. So the priests cleanse the house of God. And they offer many sacrifices to God. And they observe the Passover. And he tells Israel to observe the Passover too. He tells them to come back to God. So many people go to Jerusalem. But many people eat the Passover without cleanse themselves. And Hezechiah prays for them. So God pardons the people. Then the israelites smash the szcred pillars and the sacred poles and the high places and the altars. And Hezekiah keeps serving God. Then the king of Assyria invades Judah so Hezekiah stops all the waters of the springs and rebuilds the wall and towers of the city of David and organizes his army. And the king of Assyria provokes God. And Hezekiah and Isaiah keep praying God. So God sends his angel who destroys the army of the king of Assyria who comes back to his country and is killed by his own sons. Finally, as usual, Hezekiah becomes haughty which brings indignation against him and Judah and Jerusalem. But he humbles himself so God’s indignation does not strike Judah in the days of Hezekiah.

Josiah becomes king when he is 8 and he follows God like David. He searches for god and cleanse Judah and Jerusalem of the high places and the sacred poles and the graven images and the metal statues and the altars of the baals and the incense stands; Then he renovates the house of God. Then the king hears the book of the Law so he humbles himself and inquires about God’s will and his anger against Judah. And God says that he will bring a calamity to Judah. But because Josiah humbles himself God won’t bring the calamity during the days of Josiah. Then Josiah goes to the house of God and reads to everybody the book of the Law. And he makes a covenant before God to follow and keep his commandments. And he makes the people serve God. Then he helds a Passover. Theer had never been held a Passover like it in Israel since the days of Samuel the prophet. And Pharaoh comes and fights with Josiah whpo is killed

So we find some good kings of Judah who try to follow God but sooner or later they start to forget God especially when they get stronger, what god did for them and they forget his warnings. There is always something wrong. So through the Old Testament, God is warning us to be careful through a huge quantity of examples. We are told how the big majority of human beings go away from God and God’s will. So many human beings think that we can serve God as when we go to the restaurant and we look at the menu and we can choose whatever we want. THE BIBLE TELLS US TO REMEMBER THE OLD TESTAMENT AND TO WHAT HAPPENED TO THE ISRAELITES. THEY HAD EVERYTHING AND THEY LOST EVERYTHING. THE ALARM IS SHOUTING LOUDLY BUT IT SEEMS THAT HUMAN BEINGS ARE DEAF AND SHORT-SIGHTED. THEY HAVE ALSO RUINED THE EARTH AND THEY ARE GOING TO PAY SUCH AN EXPENSIVE PRICE AND THEY WON’T FIND ANY PLACE TO HIDE WHEN GOD’S ANGER WILL STRIKE THE EARTH.

Samuel as High priest spent his life serving God so it is difficult to think about him in other situations of life. We have no information about the education of his two sons except they ended badly. Life is difficult for everybody and there is no guarantee. We never know what may happen, we can be sure of nothing. Even when we trust people they may change.

http://my-ccm.com/old-testament-questions/questions-about-the-book-of-first-samuel/

First Samuel is the ninth book of the bible. The books of First Samuel and Second Samuel are counted as one book in the Hebrew Bible. Although First Samuel begins with the life of Samuel, it tells more about David than about Samuel. The book records Samuel’s life, Saul’s life, and David’s anointing and his early years. First Samuel can be divided into three parts: 1) The youth and Judgeship of Samuel, 2) The anointing and rejection of Saul as King of Israel, 3) The parallel lives of Saul and David to the death of Saul. The author of this book is unknown. Listed below are questions on the book of First Samuel. These questions can be used for Sunday school or bible study to help all young converts study the scriptures and may God bless you always.

How many wives did Elkanah have? (I Samuel 1:2)

He had two wives, Hannah who didn’t have children and Peninnah who had children. In fact, Hannah became the mother of Samuel and we are not told about the number and the names of Perinnah’s children. But there was a war between the two because Elkanah loved Hannah but she had no children so Perinnah would mock her which was quite usual in the Bible.

Whose words are these “Am not I better to thee than ten sons”? (I Samuel 1:8)

Elkanah loves Hannah so it means that the love of a husband is better than having children. Even if it’s not true anymore, husband and wife are supposed to have a strong relationship and they can count on each other. Children will become adults and live their lives. The link is supposed to be not so strong.
