You can check "The History of the Church", for example... or there is a note that Timothy is teaching others in one of the letters to him...

Do you agree that the purpose of the Bible is to know God? That the reading of the Bible is not the ultimate goal of our life?
The History of the Church ain't the authority. What does the book - that you can't read alone - say.
Who told you could read the History of the Church, use it as the authority, and not the bible? Who told you?

Yes. And one of the early lessons in that Bible is not to worship other gods, idols, images.

GuessWho, Could Philemon read the letter that Paul wrote to him? How about Timothy and Titus? Did they need to first summons other believers and then read the letters?
I am not sure if Philemon, Timothy and Titus understood the letters of Paul as Holy Scriptures.

Also, in the bible, we don't see God say: "Read, O Israel: The Lord is One, but Hear, O Israel!"

A bit sly. You were avoiding...we don't READ!
...whatever.

:) Disagreement does not matter if we are civil to each other.

In your example the woman has nothing else than the letter. She is truly separated from her husband.
But we have Christ inside us and seen in everything He created. He is between two or three who meet in His name. He is not far away from any of us.

I am not saying that the Bible is of a little importance. I am saying that the Bible is a helper, not a goal of our life. He will not ask "how many times have you read the Bible in your life" but "have you lived it?"

Yes,live it but how can you when you dont read what it says?

Just as I thought. You don't believe the scriptures are inspired by God.
Yet you say you believe Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the Living God.
That's a whatever!

And you want folks to believe what you think is correct!

Guess Who is Wrong?!.

That's the end of that.

Well, it is still more authoritative than you and your opinions are :)

I am just responding where you can read it. Take it or leave it, as you wish :)

In that case we are in agreement. Read it as much as you want as I do, but the Bible is not the ultimate goal of our life, its just a helping tool to know God.

Actually, if most of the Bible disappeared tomorrow, your life would not change any bit. Our life is around basic teachings and the example of Jesus Christ and the apostles. If you would not have 100 psalms or one of the gospels or Revelation, would you be more evil person? I do not think so.

So by "live it" I meant the basic and core Christianity.

You have no answer. That's expected. I wouldn't either if I didn't believe the truth.
Trofiless, the authority is the Bible. Nothing else.

This is a big issue with me. What if the Bible did disappear tomorrow?

Well, the first thing is, I know I have not memorized enough Scripture and hidden it in my heart. This inspires me to spur myself to get back to memorizing the Bible. That is the best way to make it part of your life, to meditate on it, to let the Holy Spirit work it in your heart and transform you.

In order to grow in our faith, our love of God, and to be changed into something very different than the person we were before we got saved, we need spiritual food. God has given us that spiritual food in the form of the bible. It is called the "Word of God" for a reason!

I don't know about anyone else, but my spiritual life is formed around God's Word. Daily, as I read and ponder the Words of Life, God responds by literally illuminating verses which I need to not just read, but to memorize and hid in my heart. The Holy Spirit does not work in a vacuum. He uses the Word to change us, and to help us become more like him!

God has left us his Word for a reason! It is his love letter to us, as Kayla so aptly put earlier in her metaphor! And because we are NOT separated from God, because the Spirit dwells in our hearts, there is a continual interaction with the truths that God has outlined in our Bible. The Word of God is the truth of Jesus Christ. The Word of God is the revelation of Jesus Christ from Genesis to Revelation.

To ridiculously suggest the Bible must be read in groups, or only with a designated elder reading the Bible is ridiculous. God speaks to us all. We hear his voice in our spirit, because God has spoken in his Word. We are not dependent on some kind of charismatic revelation to know God's will, his plan, his purpose for humanity and also for us. Although if we are walking with God, seeking him daily and throughout the day, we will experience the illumination that comes from knowing the Word of God and walking in it in our lives.

If the Bible disappeared tomorrow, my prayer is that I have read and studied it enough, and I have memorized enough that I could continue to walk with God because it would be in my heart. If the bible disappeared tomorrow, and that included my knowledge of it, then I would no longer be a Christian. Because the truth of Jesus Christ is revealed in the Bible, and without the Bible, I would have no knowledge of God.

As for the Psalms, I read 5 a day, after 2 years of not reading the Bible, when I was in a deep depression because I had severe Rheumatoid Arthritis, and Word Faith people had shamed me with their heresies about my lack of faith because I was not healed, when in fact, my deep studies of Scipture show that healing is not even in the atonement. God prompted me for months to read 5 Psalms, I am glad he did not give up on insisting that is where I need to park myself for 2 years! The Psalms are about real people, with real problems who cry out to God, and hold onto hope because of knowing God is who he is. I always recommend reading through the Psalms over and over when people are suffering, there is no better consolation and hope.

The gospels are precious because we can see Jesus' life on earth revealed. We can see the man, who is also God, and his compassion and mercy, and his lack of tolerance for those who have twisted the OT into something he did not create it to be. How could we live without the gospels?? Absurd to even consider!!

As for Revelation, I don't think I will say anything. It has never been my favourite book, especially when people come up with the most bizarre eschatological answers for the strange visions John had! But does it have value for the Christian? Always!

Trofimus, I did not know you felt this way about God's Word and it troubles me terribly! Have you ever read the Bible through? I would suggest you read it through, not once but 50 times, and let it permeate your soul! You will be amazed at how God uses it to make you more like him!

If Bible disappears tomorrow, there will still be church, you and me and we can get together and write down our basic confession about what is Christianity and who is Jesus Christ etc.

And do not worry, we will not get too much out of line :)

To your question - no, I do not read the Bible from the first book to the last one, I read it according to my needs, mostly the NT.

We read the Bible to know God better, we do not read the Bible just to know the Bible... I do not know how to express it more simply and clearly... and I am quite surprised somebody does not agree with it.

Trofimus,

Don't bother. People don't respond to what you say, but to what they think (based on their preconcieved ideas) you say.

Hey Tro, probably a lot of people would agree with your post 112, but not with most of the others. Sometimes I wonder why I have had so many strange things happen in my life, I am really big on knowing and speaking the scriptures as the word of God, however I know what it is like to be a Christian and not know or read the bible(told you I was strange). I came from a totally non Christian environment and was saved one night while visiting a small Baptist Church. I was almost 14 at the time and never read the bible until I was 18, during that time I was kept by the Holy Spirit. So, there is some truth in what you are saying, a really born again Christian who has been given the Holy Spirit will be kept by God even if he does not read the bible, however that is not at all the best way to go.

This is why Christians are becoming more and more liberal and they accept anything that comes down the pike, they do not read the Word of God. That is why the church is no different than the world outside its doors.

Right and we know that from reading His words to us! If we are led by the Spirit we will be led to read the Word.

The bible, the book of life, the book of works, so what is the purpose of these books.

My I suggest that it is all a testimony to the unbeliever.

Question: Where do you find God's will?

The fact is that it was not given to individuals but to churches or namely to elders in churches. The question is if it was meant to stay that way or if it was just too expensive to copy...

All in all, we should study the Bible, knowing that we are not studying the Bible to know the Bible more but to know God more :)
And so as to know the difference between PURE BREAD of the WORD of GOD from the adulterated words of men
