The reason that the evangelists were needed in that day is because there was no completed scriptural canon to appeal to. The local congregations had no choice but to appeal to the evangelists for authority.

That is not the case today, when we have a completed canon, which is the word of God.

Malachi was the last book of the O.T. written around 430 B.C. For more than 400 years there were no prophets. There is an instance in Maccabees, an apocryphal writing, but containing history which is useful, in which temple officials set documents aside, to wait for a prophet, to tell them what to do with them.

The Jewish people knew there were no prophets. It is amazing that in their day, they could discern between true and false prophets. We have lost that ability today. It is apparent by the number of people in this forum who are taken in by false prophets on here, many of whom have been proven false over time.

The fact is that we do have an ability to discern a true prophet from a false one. That ability if found in the authority of the bible. If the prophets speak that which is contrary to God's word found in the bible, we know them to be false. That is why the false prophets on here are quick to diminish the bible's importance, and appeal to the experiential instead.

But if the bible is the means by which we discern between true and false prophets, then it is the bible, and not the prophet, that is the true authority.
Again I agree for the most part. However, the roles of the apostle, prophet and evangelist are still needed in areas where the gospel is breaking new ground. As for the modernized church, the fact that there are so many divisions with so much animosity between these divisions, shows me that so much of the modern church has embraced religious traditions that equal to apostasy even if God were to raise up a new generation of true apostles, prophets and evangelists, the church would not embrace them.

As long as the great commission is still in play, God will always raise up leaders with the giftings of the apostle, prophet, evangelist, pastor and teacher. Some may have a different title in your denomination while others might not be accepted in your church however, they still have a role to play until the great commission is fulfilled.

We rarely see the authentic giftings of the apostle, prophet and evangelist today because the church lost it's scriptural identity with the conception of Catholicism which over time embraced secular forms of government, an error that the vast majority of protestant churches have yet to veer away from.

Many modern churches, especially in western civilization, have modeled themselves after popular business concepts which explains the popularity of the prosperity gospel. I see this illegitimate form of church governance being embraced in many charismatic (rick joyner) and baptist (rick warren) circles.
Awww.......you're referring to a couple of "modern day apsotles/prophets". The false "signs and wonders" heroes. And yet you said this about cessationists, who have been pointing these heretics out since their inception :.... the push by Cessastionists to rid the church of any real scriptural accountability". Now Crossfire .....if these guys aren't true apostles and prophets (and they're not), perhaps you can name one today that is ? This would help clear up whatever point it is you're trying to make. Thank you :)

Question: What can an apostle or prophet do in today's church that a pastor-teacher can't do for the church and body of Christ?

Rick Warren is a cessationist who wrote the "purpose driven" series as well as "celebrate recovery" twelve step program that teaches deliverance without genuine repentance. His material is based on popular secular business models and psychology.

A prophet is nothing more than God's mouthpiece who's gifting usually is activated by God when the leadership that is currently in place begins to compromise the biblical standard rather than uphold it. As long as the local leadership is upholding the biblical standard then you most likely will not see God raising up a prophet in that congregation however, it can and does happen and this person will usually be a very upstanding and trusted member of the congregation in question.

RUBBISH.

but very well articulated, which means you are part of the NAR.
anyone who listens to you gets what they deserve.

you are attempting to overthrow the FOUNDATION.
and many will happily embrace you and yours.

there are no more prophets or apostles. no office and no "gift".

A pastor-teacher is also God's mouth piece in expounding the scripture line upon line, precept upon precept, here a little and their a little and comparing spiritual with spiritual. God can correct the pastor, who is also a believer-priest, one on one because of the relationship, the fellowship and the communion they have, with the pastor being the servant and the under-shepherd of Christ who is the Chief-Shepherd. There is also a system of proven elders that have been entrusted, who have the Spirit that can be lead by God when something needs to be dealt with in the life and ministry of the pastor-teacher. I understand what you are saying, but I don't believe you have answered my question.

Q - What can an apostle or prophet do in today's church that a pastor-teacher can't do for the church and body of Christ?

My guess is that who ever I name you will scower your favorite continuationist bashing websites looking for material obtaining something that this person has said or done that contradicts your beliefs. However, I will name one who I believe has not only operated in the gift of the apostle and evangelist but who I believe God is also using as a prophet to the modern church. His name is Reinhard Bonnke, a man whom God has used to reach millions in Africa.

Rick Warren is a Druckerite CFR agent.

cessationism has ZERO to do with that.

but the Third Wave has carefully oiled the NAR machine now rolling into churches.
that Neo-Montanism that tries to pawn pagan enthusiasm off as spirituality, worse, calling it GIFTS, worst still, claiming they are Apostolic Era quality, quanitity and as authoritative.

carefully performed incrementally over a few generations so that people don't KNOW what the bible says. they have become accustomed to first "tongues", then signs and "manifestations", and now the ultimate EDNGAME: Apostles and prophets who will take over the church.

NEWSFLASH: NOT MY CHURCH. over my dead body.

YOU (or your friends) as an apostle or prophet are not needed, there are no more.

but many will LOVE THE IDEA (and do) since they have no clue what scripture says anyways.
the First Second and Third Waves have mission accomplished.

Christ is on the threshing floor.

"German Reinhard Bonnke has carved out an international reputation as one of the only Western evangelists to work with the African Independent Churches. This has given Bonnke access to a third of all of the active church members in Africa. According to Bonnke's own numbers, in the past decade he has preached to 17.5 million people in Africa. He has tailored his crusades to appeal to his African followers, offering "excitement in the Spirit, speaking in tongues, being slain in the Spirit, laughing uncontrollably, and dancing in the Spirit."

(14) Reinhard Bonnke by Terry Arnold, Diakrisis Australia, Newsletter of TA Ministries Vol.2, No.15 March/April 2002
Reinhard Bonnke is a German Pentecostal evangelist with a large ministry mainly to African and European countries. His crusades feature crowds of hundreds of thousands. Miracles, healings and multitudes of 'conversions' are reported. On 6th October, 14 people were crushed to death in Nigeria when they attempted to rush the stage to try to touch Bonnke. The parents of one of the dead, a little baby girl, tried unsuccessfully to get the body to Bonnke hoping he would raise her from the dead. The family then did the next best thing and laid the body on Bonnke’s Mercedes Benz in the hope of the baby coming back to life. Apparently they were putting their faith in the ‘anointing’ of the faith healer. Yet Bonnke claims, 'When I step on a platform, often without any touch of mine the blind begin to see, the deaf to hear, the dumb to speak and the cripples to walk...Miracles happen as if copied from the Gospels and the Book of Acts'.

(15) What Signs Are These? by Roger Oakland, Understanding The Times, 10/02
Signs and wonders are happening all over the world! Are they genuine? Or could these be the signs Jesus said would occur before His Second Coming? If these signs and wonders are of God, who would want to be against them? If the signs and wonders are deceptive, then why would anyone want to be for them?

(16) Reinhard Bonnke, Ecumenism & The RCC - The Charismatic Renewal In The Roman Catholic Church by Perry F. Rockwood, The Peoples Gospel Hour
The following account shows the deception and fallacy of the charismatic movement. All during the first 2 1/2 days of the New Orleans conference (The "North American Congress on the Holy Spirit and World
Evangelization" was held July 22-25, 1987, an ecumenical conference of Protestants and Catholics), there were dozens of instances of speaking in tongues, being slain by the Spirit, falling on the floor, and other practices. Yet, on Friday night after African Evangelist Reinhard Bonnke spoke, between 35,000-40,000 people stood on their feet in response to his invitation for salvation. These were the very same people who for over two days had been speaking in tongues and expressing their desire to evangelize the world. It was a frightful sight. Bonnke repeated his invitation so that all would understand that he was speaking of salvation. The thousands remained standing. He then led them into a form of a sinner's prayer which shows how confused they were about salvation.

(17) The Changing Face Of Christianity by Tony Pearce, Christian Witness Ministries
At Bonnke's rally in Nigeria, 78 miracles were claimed on stage, but no evidence was found afterwards. Bonnke cursed cancers in the name of Jesus and claimed that those who were blind could now see. The programme then panned to the area below the stage where people from the crowd were being selected as to who could go on stage to testify to healing. There was clear evidence of fakery as most would be participants were barred from the stage. One person who was selected to testify claimed that he was blind and could now see, but it was then shown that he could actually see in the first place. Fifteen people were crushed to death at the rally. The parents of a child who was killed tried to get her body to Bonnke hoping he would raise her from the dead, but were barred from the stage. You still do not seem to understand. A prophet is not title or office but a gifting. A prophet is someone God uses from time to time usually to bring correction into a situation. A prophet might very well be a pastor or teacher as well. It actually makes perfect sense if God were to use a pastor or teacher in the prophetic during a crisis, only for that person to return to their role as a pastor or teacher until God decides to use them again.

The problem is not whether or not God still uses prophets today. The problem is people misinterpretation of what a prophet is. Cessationists are every bit as guilty of misinterpreting the role of the prophet as those who abuse it.

Reinhard Bonnke [CFAN] makes incredible miracle claims, but are they true? Miracle claims and testimonies of miracles are 'two a penny', in fact many of the various cults, witch doctors, psychic surgeons and new age healers make similar claims which have been 'documented'. [1]
(22) Reinhard Bonnke Allegedly States That Jesus Christ Is Going To Appear Physically During His Crusade Series reported by Sandy Simpson, 9/5/06
A few weeks ago on my local radio station Rhema FM 96.3 (Melbourne Australia) Reinhard was interviewed and talking about his 8 video series (taped from a crusade in Africa I think) that at the end of the 8th video Jesus would physically walk through the screen. Have you heard of this one at all.

Reinhard Bonnke
I knew this would happen and it didn't even take 5 minutes. Of course you would find something wrong with Him because he does not embrace your particular doctrine. However, God has used this man to save millions. How many have you reached? A handful at the most?

RUBBISH.

but very well articulated, which means you are part of the NAR.
anyone who listens to you gets what they deserve.

you are attempting to overthrow the FOUNDATION.
and many will happily embrace you and yours.

there are no more prophets or apostles. no office and no "gift".

If you are going to promote hatred in the name of Christianity, you should at least take it to the private chat groups area where it belongs instead of sowing strife and discord in public.

Out of what you quoted, I fail to see where the hatred is. I say this in all honesty.

This person is accusing me of something that they obviously perceive as bad based on a few short answers given to a couple of short questions. I am aware that there is a charismatic prophetic movement out there (Cindy Jacobs, Chuck Pierce, Rick Joiner) and I do not agree with what they are doing. This person obviously takes issue with them and has accused me of being a part of them. How does this sound like 'love one another as I have loved you'?

From your response would you say that Agabus was one of those that was raised up on two occasions, one to prophesy of a great dearth (famine) throughout all the world in (Acts 11:28-30) that came to pass during Claudius Caesar and the otherto warn Paul not to go to Jerusalem less he be delievered into the hands of the Gentiles in (Acts 21:10-12)?

I don't mind discussing scripture however, I don't feel it would be wise to continue this discussion here in the forums. There appears to be too many onlookers lurking in the shadows looking to push their own religious views at my expense. I would rather not make myself a target of such devilish behavior.
