Legalism is a trap. . . .

YOUR definition of Legalism is TOTALLY different than most of mainline Christian Churches.

Subtracting from the Word of GOD is the Trap, but you will find that out.

Matthew 18:6 (ISV)
[SUP]6 [/SUP] "If anyone causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him if a large millstone were hung around his neck and he were drowned in the bottom of the sea.

Matthew 7:21 (ISV)
[SUP]21 [/SUP] "Not everyone who keeps saying to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will get into the kingdom of heaven, but only the person who keeps doing the will of my Father in heaven.

Tell us one last thing though, WHAT CHURCH DO YOU GO TO?

I go to a small Community Bible Church, that is Doctrinally patterned after Dr. John MacArthur's - Grace Community Church.

Here is a link to MacArthur's - Doctrinal Statement of Faith: Grace to You

Please reply with the same info.

Is it legalism to obey all of Christ's commandments like He told us to?

Since what I think your Definition of what is LEGALISM is according the doctrinal teachings of most mainline Christian Churches "subtracting from what the Word of GOD says", how is my statement off the topic of the Thread. The Topic of the thread is not what is in question here, but RATHER IT IS YOUR DEFINITION OF "WHAT IS LEGALISM" THAT IS IN QUESTION.

Striving to Obey GOD's Commandments that are written in the Old Testament because YOU LOVE GOD; IS NOT LEGALISM.

Striving to Obey GOD's Commandments that are written in the Old Testament because You want to or think you have to earn part of your Salvation, IS LEGALISM.

Perhaps you would do well to give us YOUR DEFINITION OF WHAT IS LEGALISM?

I repeat my previous request:

No because His commandments are fulfilled by faith working by love.. Now I guess if someone didn't have the Holy Spirit, they could try to obey the words of Christ by the flesh.."letter" and that would be legalism ...

Now I have already given this definition several times on this thread... but here is a basic understanding, obedience based on the written legal code of the law...example

Ro 7:6 But now we are delivered from the law, that being dead wherein we were held; that we should serve in newness of spirit, and not in the oldness of the letter.
7 ¶ What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid. Nay, I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not known lust, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet.

The love gospel. Reading your posts it looks like you replace the commandments of God with just faith and love. How easy is that, all I need is faith and love and no laws an easy road to heaven. We should have love for God before we keep His commandments. God delivered Israel out of Egypt before He gave His law, He did not give His law before delivering them or they would still be in Egypt today waiting.

After giving the law to Israel He gave the sanctuary which teaches the gospel. So God gives the law and the gospel. The NT does not contradict the OT rather it sheds light on the OT. Mispa what is your definition of legalism?

So what question do you have as it relates to the topic...do you think legalism is true obedience, or faith and love is true obedience?

I asked what is your definition of legalism. It seems like every time the law is mentioned you cry legalist.

I'm not sure what this means. So if I try to obey Christ with my body it is legalism?
But if I love Him with the Holy Spirit it is not legalism?

Yes your flesh cannot produce any work that God will accept... there is nothing good in your flesh... so good works must be a product of the Spirit, not the flesh. You never heard this before?

So you think oldness of letter is referring to the ten commandments? What is your understanding of oldness of letter?

Maybe you need to read it...?

Ro 7:6 But now we are delivered from the law, that being dead wherein we were held; that we should serve in newness of spirit, andnot in the oldness of the letter.
7 ¶ What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid. Nay, I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not known lust, except the law had said,Thou shalt not covet.

What part of the law do you think this is?

Romans 7:6 KJV
(6) But now we are delivered from the law, that being dead wherein we were held; that we should serve in newness of spirit, and not in the oldness of the letter.

What law are we delivered from?

Romans 7:5 KJV
(5) For when we were in the flesh, the motions of sins, which were by the law, did work in our members to bring forth fruit unto death.

Romans 8:2 KJV
(2) For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.

These texts are clear we are delivered from the law of sin and death.

Romans 6:23 KJV
(23) For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
