Are there prophets in the church today?"

Answer: The gift of prophet seems to have been a temporary gift given by the Christ for the laying of the foundation of the church. Prophets were foundational to the church (Ephesians 2:20). The prophet proclaimed a message from the Lord to the early believers. Sometimes a prophet’s message was revelatory (new revelation and truth from God) and sometimes a prophet’s message was predictive (see Acts 11:28 and 21:10). The early Christians did not have the complete Bible. Some early Christians did not have access to any of the books of the New Testament. The New Testament prophets “filled the gap” by proclaiming God’s message to the people who would not have access to it otherwise. The last book of the New Testament (Revelation) was not completed until late in the first century. So, the Lord sent prophets to proclaimed God’s Word to His people.

Are there true prophets today? If the purpose of a prophet was to reveal truth from God, why would we need prophets if we have the completed revelation from God in the Bible? If prophets were the “foundation” of the early church, are we still building the “foundation” today? Can God give someone a message to deliver to someone else? Absolutely! Does God reveal truth to someone in a supernatural way and enable that person to deliver that message to others? Absolutely! But is this the biblical gift of prophecy? No.

Whatever the case, whenever a person claims to be speaking for God (the essence of prophecy) the key is to compare what is said with what the Bible says. If God were to speak through a person today, it would be in 100% complete agreement with what God has already said in the Bible. God does not contradict Himself. 1 John 4:1 instructs us, “Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.” 1 Thessalonians 5:20-21 declares, “Do not treat prophecies with contempt. Test everything. Hold on to the good.” So, whether is it a “word from the Lord” or a supposed prophecy, our response should be the same. Compare what is said to what the Word of God says. If it contradicts the Bible, throw it out. If it agrees with the Bible, pray for wisdom and discernment as to how to apply the message (2 Timothy 3:16-17; James 1:5).

Ok. Discuss.

there are NO MORE PROPHETS.
every single person claiming to be prophet today is deluded or a mystery school agent.
the moment someone tells you they are a prophet: you know they are lying.

its really that simple.

1 Corinthians 12:10 *To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues:

There will be many false prophets all the way to the end, a verse that comes to mind:

Mark 13:10 *And the gospel must first be published among all nations.
11 *But when they shall lead you, and deliver you up, take no thought beforehand what ye shall speak, neither do ye premeditate: but whatsoever shall be given you in that hour, that speak ye: for it is not ye that speak, but the Holy Ghost.
12 *Now the brother shall betray the brother to death, and the father the son; and children shall rise up against their parents, and shall cause them to be put to death.
13 *And ye shall be hated of all men for my name's sake: but he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.
14 *¶But when ye shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing where it ought not, (let him that readeth understand,) then let them that be in Judaea flee to the mountains:

This verse says specifically when Antichrist is running around people are to rely on the Holy Spirit for what they are to say, so prophesies will still be happening even at that time.

I was at a church service, 12 yr ol girl in the church was dying of leukemia, in hospital nearing death, at the service a "prophet" spoke up " thus says the Lord" my heart sank, " Lord says I will heal her and raise her from her death bed" following week the girl died. I don't despise prophecy but there are alot of false prophets out there. Bible is built on prophecy and was spoken in truth and spirit. Too much knowledge of theology going on for one true prophet to be raised maybe, I don't know

Hi Elizabeth,

I hope you continue to enjoy your study on this topic.

Answer: The gift of prophet seems to have been a temporary gift given by the Christ for the laying of the foundation of the church. Prophets were foundational to the church (Ephesians 2:20). Are there prophets in the church today?
The argument above doesn't stand: There are Christians today that do not have a complete Bible, or even scripture for that matter. Besides that, scripture even shows us that just because the scriptures are finished does not nullify the gift of prophecy or prophesying. On the contrary scripture mentions lots of prophecy that has yet to be prophesied. (Revelation 11:3)

No.
Are there prophets in the church today?
This argument also doesn't stand: If you allow the Bible to define what it is to prophesy, then the writer of the article would realize they actually do believe in the gift of prophecy, because the Bible defines it as God giving a direct revelation (message) to a man to deliver to another person or people. The writer self defeated their argument. (Exodus 7:1,2)

Whatever the case, whenever a person claims to be speaking for God (the essence of prophecy) the key is to compare what is said with what the Bible says. Couldn't agree more with the writer's last statement.

God bless!

The Bible says that God's people in the last days will have the spirit of prophecy.

Revelation 12:17
(17) And the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.

Revelation 19:10
(10) And I fell at his feet to worship him. And he said unto me, See thou do it not: I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren that have the testimony of Jesus: worship God: for the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.

Revelation 22:8-9
(8) And I John saw these things, and heard them. And when I had heard and seen, I fell down to worship before the feet of the angel which shewed me these things.
(9) Then saith he unto me, See thou do it not: for I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren the prophets, and of them which keep the sayings of this book: worship God.

These verses show that God's people will have the the spirit of prophecy.

1 Corinthians 10:11
(11) Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come.
ensamples=types
Hosea 12:13
(13) And by a prophet the LORD brought Israel out of Egypt, and by a prophet was he preserved.

Israel coming out of Egypt was a type of God's people in the last days, it says that Israel was lead by a prophet so God's people will be lead by a prophet.

But anyone claiming to be a prophet must be tested by the Bible from the church, anyone refusing to be tested is refusing God's instruction.
1 John 4:1
(1) Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.

There are several tests but here are just a few:-
1)
Numbers 12:6
(6) And he said, Hear now my words: If there be a prophet among you, I the LORD will make myself known unto him in a vision, and will speak unto him in a dream.
2) Isaiah 8:20
(20) To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.
3)
2 Peter 1:20
(20) Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation.

A true prophet does not give his own interpretation of scripture. Every prophecy he or she proclaims will agree with already established truth. If they receive new light, it must agree with the old light God has already given.

There are indeed modern day prophets, scripture tell us as much. Ephesians 4:11-14, and there will be until we come to the full stature of Christ.

Those that hate todays prophets do so because they hate God. Jesus clearly tells us those that hate His servant do so because that hate Him

i don have to be a prophet to say God loves u and has a plan for ur life but well most of the prophecies today are those words, this is one of the most precious gift and yet i see many ppl abuse and call emself this prophet and that prophet.
A popular evangelist reaches your emotions. A true prophet reaches your conscience.
~ Leonard Ravenhill
Good word bro. Nor does one have to be a prophet to believe the truth of God's word that there are still prophets today.

It really is that simple. You are speaking and as you speak, you are claiming for the whole wide world that you are speaking for God as to say there is no such thing as prophets.

The bible says there are prophets. So you are one of them we are warned of who will speak against what the word of God says.

It really is that simple!

You know it seems funny to me that so many people will sight that we must watch out for the false prophet. A second of thought would take one to OK if there is false ones then we are to be looking for the good ones. People need to ask themselves where did they learn the lies from that speak against the word of God. Came from some man some where. They need to read the word of God for them selves and think of what the word says, not what some bad teacher told them it said. You know.

It is amazing how people are not willing to try to understand where others are coming from, and suddenly condemn their views. If you want to try to encourange someone to believe differently, then it may be a good idea to at least give scriptures.

Also, I have seen where some have taken others posts and completely taken them out of context and distorted what they are really trying to say.

Also, all I did was make the thread. I pasted info from ONE website and therefore did not give myself credit for this opinion in the OP. None of you know whether or not I believe in modern day prophets or not. I just set the foundation for the discussion, and asked peoples views. ;)

So now, let's discuss the defintion of a PROPHET.

In religion, a prophet, from the Greek word προφήτης profitis meaning "foreteller", is an individual who is claimed to have been contacted by the supernatural or the divine, and serves as an intermediary with humanity, delivering this newfound knowledge from the supernatural entity to other people.

Another term for a prophet would be a seer, or fortuneteller. In Christianity the word most commonly used is PROPHET.
We all know there are TONE of "psychics" out there, and if you have to pay money to get your fortune told then it is bogus anyway.

Now. If God wants to call on someone and give them a message to go out and preach to a crowd then he will. After all he is God, and God will do what he wants. God answers prayers, and his presence is made to me everyday. Am I a prophet? No. Do I recieve "signs" from God that tell the future of our fates? No.

I also think that many today use the term "prophet" loosely. For example, we all know Jesus will come again. That has been prophecied, but someone saying that today ISN'T a prophet. That has already been told. All we know is he will come and none of us know the hour or the day this will happen. We all need to be ready when he does come though.

A perfect example of a false prophet in modern times was that genius that foretold that the rapture woudl happen this past May. Obviously he was wrong, but what did he do? Said he got the dates mixed up and now the rapture is to happen in October. Will the rapture happen then? Probably not, and if it does it certainly would not happen because HE said so. He was not speaking from God. He was just stupid.

Unfortunately, there are many false prophets in modern times. When I turn the TV on and see men "healing" people I seriously doubt their gifts. I see no humility in them and it looks to be nothing more than a scam. I am not saying God doesn't HEAL, but God doesn't have to work through people to heal others either.
When a man in a 2,000.-00 suit claims to be a prophet of God and lives in a huge mansion, and has thousands of "followers" he is nothing more than a theif in my eyes. People give this man money to support his extravagant lifestyle and it looks to me he is makig his reward in Earth, when a Christians reward is in Heaven.

Jesus wasn't wealthy. He had no throne on Earth, but his kingdom is in Heaven. Was Paul considered wealthy? I don't believe so. He certainly didn't use his abilities for his own gain, and that is where modern day prophets bother me. MAny frauds out there.

Also, like I have stated before in other threads. Certain signs, and gifts were given to men in the first century before the recorded bible was complete. Prophets were used because they did not have a bible. I totally believe that, but today we have the bible, and we have faith. We knoe Jesus will come. We know to be ready. Do we know this from a modern prophet telling us? No. We knoe this because of the bible.

Also, all these modern prophets need to be careful in what they teach. Do not add to the word of God; meaning the bible...

Revelation 22:18
For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book: And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and [from] the things which are written in this book.

Do you believe in modern day prophecy that testifies of Jesus and His salvation and God's plan for this world?

1 Peter 4:11
If anyone speaks, let him speak as the oracles of God. If anyone ministers, let him do it as with the ability which God supplies, that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom belong the glory and the dominion forever and ever. Amen.
