We already know of God's plan, through ancient prophecies recorded in the bible.

It is amazing how people are not willing to try to understand where others are coming from, and suddenly condemn their views. If you want to try to encourange someone to believe differently, then it may be a good idea to at least give scriptures.

Also, I have seen where some have taken others posts and completely taken them out of context and distorted what they are really trying to say.

Also, all I did was make the thread. I pasted info from ONE website and therefore did not give myself credit for this opinion in the OP. None of you know whether or not I believe in modern day prophets or not. I just set the foundation for the discussion, and asked peoples views. ;)

So now, let's discuss the defintion of a PROPHET.

In religion, a prophet, from the Greek word προφήτης profitis meaning "foreteller", is an individual who is claimed to have been contacted by the supernatural or the divine, and serves as an intermediary with humanity, delivering this newfound knowledge from the supernatural entity to other people.

Another term for a prophet would be a seer, or fortuneteller. In Christianity the word most commonly used is PROPHET.
We all know there are TONE of "psychics" out there, and if you have to pay money to get your fortune told then it is bogus anyway.

Now. If God wants to call on someone and give them a message to go out and preach to a crowd then he will. After all he is God, and God will do what he wants. God answers prayers, and his presence is made to me everyday. Am I a prophet? No. Do I recieve "signs" from God that tell the future of our fates? No.

I also think that many today use the term "prophet" loosely. For example, we all know Jesus will come again. That has been prophecied, but someone saying that today ISN'T a prophet. That has already been told. All we know is he will come and none of us know the hour or the day this will happen. We all need to be ready when he does come though.

A perfect example of a false prophet in modern times was that genius that foretold that the rapture woudl happen this past May. Obviously he was wrong, but what did he do? Said he got the dates mixed up and now the rapture is to happen in October. Will the rapture happen then? Probably not, and if it does it certainly would not happen because HE said so. He was not speaking from God. He was just stupid.

Unfortunately, there are many false prophets in modern times. When I turn the TV on and see men "healing" people I seriously doubt their gifts. I see no humility in them and it looks to be nothing more than a scam. I am not saying God doesn't HEAL, but God doesn't have to work through people to heal others either.
When a man in a 2,000.-00 suit claims to be a prophet of God and lives in a huge mansion, and has thousands of "followers" he is nothing more than a theif in my eyes. People give this man money to support his extravagant lifestyle and it looks to me he is makig his reward in Earth, when a Christians reward is in Heaven.

Jesus wasn't wealthy. He had no throne on Earth, but his kingdom is in Heaven. Was Paul considered wealthy? I don't believe so. He certainly didn't use his abilities for his own gain, and that is where modern day prophets bother me. MAny frauds out there.

Also, like I have stated before in other threads. Certain signs, and gifts were given to men in the first century before the recorded bible was complete. Prophets were used because they did not have a bible. I totally believe that, but today we have the bible, and we have faith. We knoe Jesus will come. We know to be ready. Do we know this from a modern prophet telling us? No. We knoe this because of the bible.

Also, all these modern prophets need to be careful in what they teach. Do not add to the word of God; meaning the bible...

Revelation 22:18
For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book: And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and [from] the things which are written in this book.

People on here have been putting scriptures for each time a new person comes and puts up the same repeat post we have seen over and over. The main problem is that lots don't care what the bible says and lots are blinded.

All the Christians can leave and turn the site over to the devil or they can keep speaking the truth of what the bible says and be attacked just as the bible says they will be attacked and they can rejoice just like the bible says to do.

Hi Elizabeth,

I hope you continue to enjoy your study on this topic.

The argument above doesn't stand: There are Christians today that do not have a complete Bible, or even scripture for that matter. Besides that, scripture even shows us that just because the scriptures are finished does not nullify the gift of prophecy or prophesying. On the contrary scripture mentions lots of prophecy that has yet to be prophesied. (Revelation 11:3)

This argument also doesn't stand: If you allow the Bible to define what it is to prophesy, then the writer of the article would realize they actually do believe in the gift of prophecy, because the Bible defines it as God giving a direct revelation (message) to a man to deliver to another person or people. The writer self defeated their argument. (Exodus 7:1,2)

Couldn't agree more with the writer's last statement.

God bless!

Which is why I like to give scripture and explain my interpretation with scripture. ;)

  1. Matthew 23:24
You blind guides, filtering out a gnat and gulping down a camel!
Matthew 23:23-25 (in Context) Matthew 23 (Whole Chapter)
just because people may not agree with your view doesnt make them evil.

Remember that.

At the same time I never said phophets didnt exist. All I said was I am not one, and there are many frauds out there, and if God wanted to speak through someone he will.

Read what I say carefully. Very carefully.

yep. that about sums it up ;)

I believe whenever God speaks through a person they are prophesying according to the Biblical definition though many would lie and try to make it more or defraud it to make it less then what it really means.

People should know that the purpose of any prophecy is salvation of the one hearing it and bringing them in a closer relationship with GOD. not the messenger but the one who sends the message. God does not want worship of the messenger but worship and relationship with HIM.

this isn't directed at you Elizabeth but I think these scriptures should be read again with prayerful and humble hearts before God our Heavenly Father as a reminder to us all. Salvation is a work of GOD not man.

James 4:11
Do not criticize one another, my friends. If you criticize or judge another Christian, you criticize and judge the Law. If you judge the Law, then you are no longer one who obeys the Law, but one who judges it.

I do agree with you. I am not saying they do not exist, but there are so many that do it for their own glory. Not Gods. That is why Im conservative when it comes to subjects like this.

Just coz someone said God talked to them doesnt mean he did. If there is an evil motive about it then they are a false prohpet and that is an AWESOME VERSE!!!!!!!!!!

i also try not tell tell ppl they are wrong when i disagree with them, i try my best to give reasons why i believe the way i do.

sometimes we all come off judgemental even if it is not intended that way.

You know who, not you
ANYONE claiming to be a prophet today is either deluded, or a liar.
there is NO truth in either of them.

NO MORE PROPHETS. practically, historically and exegetically impossible...but some people do not care. they want men to listen to, and signs to marvel at.

there are only FALSE PROPHETS sent to deceive and usurp. HERETICS. every single one.

and they're quite successful: among the undiscerning.
for the prophets prophesy falsely, and the people LOVE to have it so.
no matter how many times the truth of the foundation laid once for all is given, the multitudes will gather for the free lunch.

carry on 4runner: you're developing quite a following for yourself. that's on your own head: and theirs. they have no one to blame for where they end up. they simply don't know what The Word really says, because they don't care enough to know.

this information isn't posted for them. it's for those who have received the love of the truth, at any cost to themselves.

there are NO MORE PROPHETS.

APOSTLES AND PROPHETS TODAY
There are those who claim to be apostles and prophets by their own word. Others claim it by showing their signs, wonders and miracles. This so-called signs and wonders movement is part of an effort to restore what they understood to be the five-fold ministry described in Ephesians 4:11. The proliferators of the movement claim that these dynamics are what is necessary for the church to have power. In actuality, those who lay claim to this ministry today are operating under a misunderstanding of apostles and prophets of the Bible. The Lord confirmed His signs to the apostles' words to show a transition of authority from Israel and its priesthood to the apostles who were laying down the foundation for the church, a new entity. This unique anointing testified to Israel and to the gentiles a new order of leadership, the demonstration of spiritual authority was transferred to the church Christ body. Becoming aware of what the Bible says about these positions in the early church can help us guard against misleading teachings in the church today.

Validated by signs and miracles, the apostles deemed the faith for the whole Church and established the written word by inspiration of the Holy Spirit. Once the scriptures were completed, the Church had all that was necessary in the area of revelational truth. The apostles' instructions were in words, then put to paper for all succeeding generations on how to live in obedience to the faith.

Once a foundation is laid down and a house is built, we don't rebuild the foundation.(Eph.2:20) Neither should we rip apart the house that the Lord has built.

A true apostle would point out the false ones. Yet today, not only do those who claim to be apostles fail to do so, but there are threats and manipulations for those who do not go along with what they are trying to portray. 'Jezebel,' 'Antichrist,' and 'Blasphemer of the Holy Spirit' are common terms used for those who speak against them.

The New Apostolic Reformation
What is it and where is it going?
The International Coalition of Apostles headed by C. Peter Wagner is the most influential purveyor of the New Apostolic Reformation, a term coined by Wagner. This organization is really an extension of the New Order of the Latter Rain whose influences and mentors include William Branham, Franklin Hall, the Hawtin brothers, and more recently Bill Hamon, Paul Cain and the Kansas City Prophets. The doctrines of the Latter Rain have influenced most of the televangelists on TV today, and so have crept deceptively into many denominations. The main heretical teachings of the New Order Of The Latter Rain, as ruled in 1949 at the General Council of the Assemblies of God held in Seattle, were as follows: (1) The restoration of foundational apostles and prophets in the churches. (2) The teaching and promotion of a transferable impartation or anointings that are passed on "by" the laying on of hands "by" the will of man. (3) Confession and deliverance from sin to men. (4) The impartation of spiritual gifts by the laying on of hands such as the gift of languages for missionary service and other "ministry skills". (5) The extreme and unscriptural practice of imparting or imposing personal leadings by the means of the gifts of utterance, "word of knowledge" or prophecy. (6) Distortions of scripture interpretations, which are in opposition to teachings and practices generally accepted among the Church.

Articles on C. Peter Wagner's "New Apostolic Reformation" as well as false spiritual warfare teachings. This page includes the "successul apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors and teachers" named on the Wagner Leadership Institute's site as those with "proven effectiveness in ministry, communications skills and a recognized anointing for the impartation of ministry skills". Beware of these "Latter Rain" advocatres who would lay another foundation than the one already laid in Jesus Christ and the Apostles and Prophets of Scripture!

Where Have All the Spiritual Gifts Gone?
A dilemma confronts noncessationists. If prophecy and tongues, as they function in the New Testament, continue today, then the noncessationist is faced with the quite practical and troublesome implication that Scripture alone is not a sufficient verbal revelation from God; the canon is at best relatively closed. Alternatively, if, as most noncessationists insist, "prophecy" and "tongues" today are nonrevelatory or less than fully revelatory, then these contemporary phenomena are misnamed and are something other than the New Testament gifts. Noncessationists are caught in a redemptive-historical anachronism, seeking within the superstructure of the Church's history what belonged to its foundational era. They are involved in the contradictory effort of trying to maintain along with a closed New Testament canon the presence of those revelatory gifts that were for the open canon period when the New Testament documents were in the process of being written.

Prophecy and tongues have ceased. What remains, supremely and solely sufficient and authoritative until Jesus comes, is "the Holy Spirit speaking in the Scriptures" (Westminster Confession of Faith, 1:10).

Nope, and neither do you. Anyone that denies that New Covenant Prophets still exist, denies scripture. And anyone that denies them with the animosity that you do, obviously hate God's prophets. And anyone that hates God's prophets hates God. Anyone that hates God agrees with the Devil.
