Well, let's look at some Greek words.
There is "ouranos" [#3772], this is celestial heaven itself which is used in Matthew 24:30 & 2 Corinthians 12:2.
There is "mesouranema" [#3321], this is mid-heaven, the visible skies above us used only three times and they are all in Revelation... 8:13; 14:6; 19:17
There is "aer" [#109], this is the air at the surface of the earth, the air that we breathe, and it also metaphorically represents the spiritual realm, this word is used in Acts 22:23; 1 Corinthians 9:26, 14:9; Ephesians 2:2; 1 Thessalonians 4:17 (yes the notorious "Rapture" verse).
This causes quite a dilemna, because Matthew 24:30 states Jesus is in the invisible celestial heaven.
Yet, in 1 Thessalonians 4:17, Jesus is either in the invisible spiritual realm or he is on the very surface of the earth. Does this describe a Rapture?
No!
Furthermore, the Greek word used for "meet" is "apantesis" [#529], which is used only three times in the New Testament, Matthew 25:6; Acts 28:15, and 1 Thessalonians 4:17.
Another new form of celebration, again almost unknown in pre-Hellenistic Greece, is the ritualised reception of kings, Roman magistrates, and foreign envoys in cities. There would be watchmen of the city looking for their king to come marching in which, the city gates would be opened wide and formal procession would meet the king partway and escort him back into their cities. And the streets would be lined with his patron citizens to greet him with celebrations, etc.
So, yes, the Rapture is a false doctrine because it contradicts the original Greek in every conceivable way. This is is not what the Greek is teaching. Paul was using the customs and cultures of his day to express the coming of Christ to deliver his church, the dead believers from Hades and the living believers from the Tribulation in A.D. 70.
