I think it really does say people will be plucked up by some external force. That's what the word for "caught up" implies. But the question is , is that what it's supposed to mean.
Would you be partial to the idea that we will be on the earth as it burns up? : At least that's what this verse seems to indicate "the day" i.e. the day of the Lord:
1Co 3:13 Every man's work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man's work of what sort it is.
Perhaps the "catching up", is our souls flying up to heaven to meet the Lord in the air , after we've been killed by the fire.
