Repentance was of
dead works of self-righteousness.

This speaks of exactly what you are preaching. Dead works of self righteousness.
legalists need to repent of their dead works.
For Christians however, our faith is counted for righteousness, Rom 4:5.
Hence we do not turn back to the lusts of the flesh seeking to establish righteousness by works of the law ( which is sexual immorality with Hagar).
what is sin?
John 8:11 She said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more.
1 John 3:4 Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law,
yes, this is what sin is.

Are Christians under the law?
Answer. No! Rom 8:2, Rom 10:4, Gal 3:24, Gal 5:18, 1Tim 1:9.
Hence Satan the accuser, and even the legalists, cannot charge Christians with sin as we're not under the law for righteousness. Our righteousness is by faith, instead.

Who shall lay any thing (this includes sin) to the charge of God's elect? It is God that justifieth.
