Is there a connection?
For example smoking leads to lung cancer...gluttony leads to obesity and many medical problems associated with it.

What does the Bible say about it?

I know we are not under the Law but saved through grace. This is not a salvation question but more a practical question.

This temporal bodies have to obey the laws of this world. We do not have new bodies yet.

We are told our bodies are temples of God for the Holy Spirit lives within our hearts.

How do we defile the body? How do we not care of what God has blessed us with?

I know personally that I should excercise more and eat less sweets. I eat pork.

I don't think it affects my soul. I know I am a child of God, but I wonder about my body.

I wonder why people live shorter and shorter lives in the Bible..in the beginning lives were in the 1000 years...then Moses at 120...now everyone thinks it's special to live to 100.

I seem to hear about cancer and man-made items that cause cancer alot. Things we put in our food, things we surround ourselves with, things we pump in our air.

I just thank God we are as healthy as we are with the abuse we do both to our bodies and the earth.

So my question is what does the Bible say about it all?

Interesting note i learned from a microbiology course....when the flu virus is dormant in humans, it is in pigs mixing and becoming a new strain to inflict havoc on the human population later.

There is a connection between sin and death, and sin and physical illness, just read Deuteronomy 28 and see what the Lord said about the blessing and the curses.

Jesus also showed a connection between health issues and sin here.....
John 5:14Afterward Jesus findeth him in the temple, and said unto him, Behold, thou art made whole: sin no more, lest a worse thing come unto thee.

We know by Jesus words that food and drink does not defile our hearts, but it is sin that defiles a man. Even still those who commit fornication sin against their own physical bodies, which is also why we see all these sexually transmitted diseases in the world.
1 Corinthians 6:18Flee fornication. Every sin that a man doeth is without the body; but he that committeth fornication sinneth against his own body.

The Lord sends many judgments upon the earth to get men to repent and turn from their wicked ways, He sends the sword, plagues, pestilence, diseases to get mans attention. But even for all these things men still not repent because their hearts have been hardened.

Cleanse first the inside of your vessel, so that the outside of your vessel may become clean. :)

Rom 12:1
I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.

Because they got farther and farther away from the revelation of GOD. Notice that after the flood, lifespans starting dropping dramatically, and after the dispersion at Babel when no one could understand each other anymore, lifespans were cut in half (starting with Peleg).

For the same reason in reverse, during the millenium lifespans will increase to the point that a youth will be 100 years old because the knowledge of GOD will cover the earth.

Disease entered the world via sin, but I don't think there is an auto- correlation. Someone with a chronic disease isn't more sinful than someone without.

Most diseases linked to "sin" is more about bad choices. It's OK to eat carbs (you need them, actually :p ), but if we do that by eating caster sugar every day (in place of more natural sources of crabs) that sure isn't good

I don't believe sin has anything to do with getting diseases. You could be the healthiest person in the world, no drugs/alcohol/smoking etc, and still end up with cancer or some other disease. God doesn't punish us with sickness because of how we live our lives. Look at murderers in prison-- THEY are nice and healthy. :/

Brothers and sisters please do not work too hard to connect sin with illness or physical misfortunes that may befall a believer. It is true some illness is brought on by sin, and confession is the best remedy, along with elders, if you know any, to come and pray for the sick and annoint him with oil.
Sometimes we see in the Word that an affliction or ailment is for the glory of God......never judge by appearances but with right judgment.........Praise God always, amen.

Been there, done that more than once, didn't work at all. :/ God's healing is NOT for EVERYONE.

I thought about and prayed about it some more and I realized how this could go the wrong way but it is something that I have been wondering.

I pray God helps me find words to explain correctly...

I think we have a problem making everything about the individual.

You commuted sexual sin, you get a sexually transmitted disease, etc.

However I believe that is wrong. I believe that many people suffer not because of their own personal sin but because of societies sins.

Jesus had no sin yet died for us.

I wonder if there is more to the Bible verses that we are to bear one another's burdens. Not just emotional burdens, financial or spiritual pain, but perhaps physical as well?

I believe it wrong to condemn someone for being ill or sick. Jesus never did. He healed them. Yet in the Bible Jesus did not heal everyone. Some would claim it's because of their unbelief..however Jesus is able to help with our unbelief.

I would rather note how Jesus states it is the will of God to heal some and not others. To save one widow and not all. In this temporary earth that will be replaced, not all physical bodies will be healed because most will die. We will be given new bodies.

Our physical health Is not a reflection of our spiritual standing.

That being said. If you study the old testament you see God does not render judgement on individuals as much as whole nations.

When one person sins and others stands by and does not stop him, then he and those standing by are punished.

Makes me wonder what injustices do we stand by and witness but do nothing about?

In my area a child prostution ring was operating.

I believe catching the crooks is only the beginning of the solution.

When we see rot we have to get to the root of it.

Why did the girls allow themselves to be used without speaking out? Where were their parents who were suppose to protect them? Why did they "need" the money?

I feel more than anything that we as a Christian community must find Biblically inspired answers to the world's societal problems.

I don't have them, but I pray that God reveals it to someone with the heart and power to enact change. Visible change where such situation are prevented before they take root and choke out the bright light of our youth with the many thorns of corruption and sin.

If you get an STD from committing a sexual sin, it just means you forgot to use a condom.. lol

What about the children who get AIDS from being raped because of the false belief of "virgin cleansing". I heard it happens in South Africa. That men think it they rape a virgin, they will be cured of AIDS.

Obviously if those kids got AIDS from being raped, then obviously whoever raped them ALREADY had AIDS. Like I said, have sex without a condom, and ya get an STD. :/ There is no cure for AIDS, so those men with AIDS are delusional and misguided..

I'm not sure if this has been posted or not but this was the first thing that I thought of...

John 5:1-14
1 After this there was a Jewish festival, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. 2 In Jerusalem near the Sheep Gate in the north city wall is a pool with the Aramaic name Bethsaida. It had five covered porches, 3 and a crowd of people who were sick, blind, lame, and paralyzed sat there.[a] 5 A certain man was there who had been sick for thirty-eight years. 6 When Jesus saw him lying there, knowing that he had already been there a long time, he asked him, “Do you want to get well?”

7 The sick man answered him, “Sir, I don’t have anyone who can put me in the water when it is stirred up. When I’m trying to get to it, someone else has gotten in ahead of me.”

8 Jesus said to him, “Get up! Pick up your mat and walk.” 9 Immediately the man was well, and he picked up his mat and walked. Now that day was the Sabbath.

10 The Jewish leaders said to the man who had been healed, “It’s the Sabbath; you aren’t allowed to carry your mat.”

11 He answered, “The man who made me well said to me, ‘Pick up your mat and walk.’”

12 They inquired, “Who is this man who said to you, ‘Pick it up and walk’?” 13 The man who had been cured didn’t know who it was, because Jesus had slipped away from the crowd gathered there.

14 Later Jesus found him in the temple and said, “See! You have been made well. Don’t sin anymore in case something worse happens to you.”

Based off of this passage, yes there can be direct connection with our sin and our health. I've seen this principle in my life and many other people's lives. Also if we abuse our minds, there is also a connection. The mind, the body, all of it works together to put us in misery.

Romans 8 discusses this at length.
