What did Jesus mean when he said, “Upon this rock I will build my church”?

The name Peter (Gk., Petros) means “rock” or “rock-man.” In the next phrase Christ used petra (upon this rock), a feminine form for “rock,” not a name. Christ used a play on words. He does not say “upon you, Peter” or “upon your successors,” but “upon this rock”—upon this divine revelation and profession of faith in Christ.

The following comment on this verse from The Bible Knowledge Commentary sums up the issue:

16:17-20. Peter’s words brought a word of commendation from the Lord. Peter wasblessed because he had come to a correct conclusion about the person of Christ and because great blessing would be brought into his life. The Lord added, however, this wasnot a conclusion Peter had determined by his own or others’ ability. God, the Father in heaven, had revealed it to him. Peter was living up to his name (it means “rock”) for he was demonstrating himself to be a rock. When the Lord and Peter first met, Jesus had said Simon would be named Cephas (Aram. for “rock”) or Peter (Gr. for “rock”; John 1:41-42).

But his declaration about Messiah’s person led to a declaration of Messiah’s program.Peter (Petros, masc.) was strong like a rock, but Jesus added that on this rock (petra, fem.) He would build His church. Because of this change in Greek words, many conservative scholars believe that Jesus is now building His church on Himself. Others hold that the church is built on Peter and the other apostles as the building’s foundation stones (Eph. 2:20; Rev. 21:14). Still other scholars say that the church is built on Peter’s testimony. It seems best to understand that Jesus was praising Peter for his accurate statement about Him, and was introducing His work of building the church on Himself (1 Cor. 3:11).

Once Again....John 1 verse 42 (KJV)
"And he brought him to Jeaus. And when Jesus beheld him, he said, Thou art SIMON, THE SON OF JONA (JOHN) THOU SHALT BE CALLED CEPHAS, WHICH IS BY INTERPRETATION, A STONE" (NOT A "ROCK" BUT A A STONE").

Fact #2: Why would a Holy and Spotless Lord/ God leave the church he started in tbe hands of a Mortal man? God built His Church Not Peter's Church or anyone else's Church.

Peter was never a Pope, nor did God authorize anyone to address themselves as "Father" or "His Emminence" or anything else with Titles making any human Glorified. The Bible also states this: "To GOD BE ALL THE GLORY" The word "ALL" Simply means 100% of Praise and Glory goes unto God and him only. 100% means not even 1% for anyone else..Mary..The Pope...Priest...Pastor...Bishop..Cardinal...Nuns, NADA..

The Rock that the True Church was built on is Jesus Christ. By teaching Peter was the Rock and not Jesus is teaching the lie of Satan.

Mary is not a mediator between us and God.

1 Timothy 2:5[SUP]5 [/SUP]For there is one God, and one mediator also between God and men, the man Christ Jesus

Nowhere in the Scriptures does the Holy Spirit say Mary is a Mediator between us and God. The Catholic Church in their desire to Worship and Serve two Gods, teach Mary is also a God by being our Mediator. No where in the Scriptures does the Holy Spirit say Mary can hear our Prayers. By the Catholic Church teaching Mary is our Mediator they have exceeded what is written in the Scriptures.

1 Corinthians 4:6
[SUP]6 [/SUP]Now these things, brethren, I have figuratively applied to myself and Apollos for your sakes, so that in us you may learn not to exceed what is written, so that no one of you will become arrogant in behalf of one against the other.

Nowhere is it written Mary can hear our Prayers. By the Catholic Church teaching Mary can hear our Prayers they have exceeded what is written in the Scriptures.

Today the Catholic Church has walked away from the Truth from God to teach their lies as truths.

Good job!!...Have a Question for Catholic Faithful on here: When Jesus rode into Jerusalem; he rode in on a simple Donkey..He did'nt ride into Jerusalem in a Golden Chariot with 6 or 7 Spear laden Gaurds protecting him.

Never read where he once, ever made and speeches about "Global Warming" (As Pope Francis has been doing lately) or that we should invite into our communities other Regigees, some being terrorists like inviting a Fox to gaurd the Chickens, which our national leaders also Advocate..David also said in:
Psalm 37 verse 25: " I have been young, and now am old; yet have i NOT SEEN THE RIGHTEOUS forsaken, nor HIS SEED BEGGING BREAD"..Amen. Finally, Jesus addressed the Political/ Religious leaders in his day as"Vipers" and "Hypocrites". And The Vatican has two functions..(1) A "Church" which they gladly show how "Pious" they appear (2) and Hide the Political function from everyone. The Vatican is a full voting member in The United Nations. A group who's hidden agenda to have a OneWorld Government is priority #1.

Need to take off the blindfold people because the People you trust, your family loves and puts they're faith in: is bling siding you...praying for all of you!

PLEASE show me just ONE example; one place where either Yahweh or Jesus were EVER "OK" of, tolerated, accepted, ignored, or permitted OTHER Christian Faiths.
Congratulations on posing the dumbest question in CC's history.

Our faith is to be in Jesus Christ, not various faiths.

There is only one Christian Faith.

There is also the Catholic faith, but this is a false faith with Mary as their God. God never accepted any Faith that included other gods like the Catholic Faith does.

We walk with Jesus. We do not walk with Mary.
We Pray to Jesus. We do not Pray to Mary.
We have fellowship with Jesus. We do not have fellowship with Mary.

Our Christian Faith is with Jesus, who is God, only. Catholic faith is with Mary only.

Face it working4christ2 you are a false prophet, a wolf in sheep clothing. You are not with us in Jesus, you are on the outside looking in. Because of your Worshiping Mary, God has blinded your eyes to the Truth.
