Mat 24:2 And Jesus said unto them, See ye not all these things? verily I say unto you, There shall not be left here one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down.
The Temple and surrounding buildings inside the outer walls waere totally leveled to the ground, the re-usable stones carried away by the Romans to add to their own structures. That was in part a symbolic gesture from Rome due to the high cost of their military might to kill the last Jewish rebel. The outer western wall made the former temple site useful for gentile purposes. Had they destroyed the wall the whole area would have washed out. Insult #1: The holy place was turned over to pagans. #2: the Roman trash dump was below the wall where Jewish pilgrims now pray, refuse and sewage dumped over the top.
