I have been looking into the Foursquare Church and I am trying to figure out what their stance is in tongues. I know they are a charismatic church that believe in the subsequent event of the baptism of the Holy Spirit and that the gifts are for today. But where do they stand on tongues specifically? I ask because there are generally two ways of thinking on this issue. One is the classical pentecostal view that tongues are the immediate initial sign of Baptism of the Holy Spirit. That one must speak in tongues to 'prove' that they have been baptized by the Holy Spirit. The other view, is that while tongues are still in operation today, they are not necessarily the only sign that a christian must have after Baptism of the Holy Spirit. That gifts are seen as more fluid and the Spirit gives however and whenever he wills (after the Baptism). I feel this view is becoming more popular now a days in pentecostal churches. Where does Foursquare Church generally fall in this? I have read some sources that claim its like Assemblies of God in saying tongues are the initial sign. But on their website they have a less clear position and don't really talk about it much. If you can clear this up for me that will be great!

If I'm not mistaken, the Foursquare hold that speaking in tongues is THE evidence of the baptism of the Holy Spirit which is THE evidence of salvation. In simpler terms, if you don't speak in tongues they would highly doubt your salvation.

I could be wrong about this since my experience with the Foursquare is decades old and with a specific congregation and I do know that sometimes a single congregation within a denomination may not accurately reflect the official stance of the denomination.

I'd only attend there for four square meals.

Every time I attended the local 4 Square they had a big emphasis on cash and sending the KFC buckets around for "debt" collection - seemed like guilt tripping to me.

Oh and the generic prophetic messages from the "pews" such as "if my people" etc.

I guess most any denomination has several variations...

I grew up in a Lutheran church that believed speaking in tongues was of the devil. I later attended an Assemblies of God church that believed in speaking in tongues, but did not believe that it was necessary to have in order to prove your salvation or stance as a Christian.

I have several family members who have attended a Foursquare church for a few years, and they've told me that they've never even heard speaking in tongues mentioned.

My honest advice? Avoid the Foursquare church. There are plenty of reasons....please conduct your own research.
