Hey BeyondET,

Holy Smokes!! (pun intended :) )

Based on what you wrote....I was waiting for someone to step out and get clobbered!

I wouldn't say "theatrics", though. How about "excessive enthusiasm with Malachi 1:11"?

" For from the rising of the sun even unto the going down of the same my name shall be great among the Gentiles; and in every place incense shall be offered unto my name, and a pure offering: for my name shall be great among the heathen, saith the Lord of hosts." (KJV)

Well, maybe "theatrics" works now that I look again. Look at all of the people filming the swinging incense.

God bless.
I know right lol.. somebody is going to hurt with that thing swinging like that hope that isn't just on a piece of rope maybe someone should email the pope. all those flashes looks like a rock concert :)

Hey Demi.

I have been offline for a long time. Sorry I haven't responded in awhile.

It would be quite a discussion to figure out what is going on between the verse you quoted above and the verse I am referring to. I know how my church harmonizes those texts. My question to you was how do you or your church harmonize them? The verse I am referring to is found in every Bible I have looked at...not just a Catholic Bible.

My question was with Matthew 28:19 which is found in many of the translations (I didn't check them all) you showed above. I'll just cite 3 for now:

19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: (KJV)

"Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit," (NIV)

"Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations,[b] baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. " (NLT)

Those are the words of Jesus Christ. How do you harmonize those? Just curious.

God bless.

p.s. (I still giggle about the flying Jesus...gotta show that to some of my friends.)
Hi Bestil
This thread is too long and I'm not good at following along due to time limitations.

I DID comment on the flying Jesus. I thought it was pretty close to blasphemy.

Regarding the difference between Mathew 28:19 and Acts 2:38 ---

I see no problem with this. I'm sorry I missed anything that might have been said.
Mathew is the ONLY place where a FORMULA is given for being baptized, and the formula is given by Jesus Himself.
This is the wording to be used WHEN BEING BAPTIZED.

Acts is speaking to the TYPE of baptism. It is no longer John's baptism that will be practiced, but Jesus'.
IOW, with the authority of Jesus, with the power of Jesus. John's baptism was for repentence of sin, Jesus' baptism is for power and strength. He told the Apostles to wait for the Holy Spirit before going out to preach.
Acts 1:4-5

Would you agree with this?

Also, I'd just like to add that although I do not agree with all Catholic doctrine, I find no reason to carry on this way between brethren. It's divisive to the Church (capital C) and we should be as united as possible in these difficult times when our very faith is under attack, and I mean by society in general. So while we argue among ourselves, our church (small c) is crumbling around us. I find this sad.

It's a joy to find God, to announce Him, and to worship Him in the way one sees proper. No posts from the Jesus Only crowd please. Instead read Romans 1:20 and ponder it.

Thanks for your response.

Hey all,

I'm new around here, but this thread popped up when I typed in "catholic" while trying to search for a Bible study group.

Anyway, just wanted to chip in and say that I'm not here to defend my faith, but rather to let you know that every week in mass we constantly pray for the unity of the whole Christian Church. 1 Corinthians 1:10 reads, "I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another in what you say and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly united in mind and thought."

I can see where the Protestants are coming from here - but I do wish that some of them would take the time to actually attend a mass to see the focus placed on liturgy, scripture and the homily. The other sacraments like the Eucharist/Holy Communion and Mystery of Faith only takes up 5% of what the entire service is about. I find it funny to read about how stifling some people feel mass is for them, when to me it is the one place I can feel and have experienced the Holy Spirit's presence. In fact, I just led a praise and worship service and people were slained in the Spirit... I don't understand why others would say that we are not Christian. I've been to mega-churches here as well as some traditional denominations like the Baptists, Anglicans (Church of England) and Methodists (grew up in Catholic and Methodist schools), and I can see much similarities in how the services are conducted, which makes me think of the verse above. I have never had any of my Christian friends deny me my own faith, and we share our thoughts on verses and Church doctrines freely.

I'd like to see some of that religious tolerance here on this forum and more of it in other countries of the world too. (Speaking as a Singaporean, living in a multi-racial and multi-religious country where being kind and loving is a national campaign and a primary agenda. Yup, check out the Singapore Kindness Movement. Singapore Kindness Movement - Make Someone's Day - Singapore Kindness Movement )
I pray that one day we will be able to see eye to eye.

How can you experience the presence of the Holy Spirit when you are Praying to Mary??????

It does not matter what you do in Mass because its all worthless. God cannot and will not listen to your Prayers to Him as long as you keep Praying the Rosary and the Hail Mary. These will keep you from entering into Heaven with us True Children of God.

And yes i do know what goes on in the Catholic Church. I was born and raised in the Catholic Church. God sought me out and removed me from the Corrupted Catholic Church.

I'm a Roman Catholic Deacon and I deal with anti Catholic issues from Protestsnts all the time. Most if not all the issues are based on ignorance and lack of education. I would suggest you go to a Catholic website and you will find very good answers to those common objection. I suggest going to

Catholic Answers

This is Catholic Answers website. A great site to answer all those kinds of objections. On the website go to library at the top and then select " tracts". Good reasonably short scriptural answers to those common objections. If you have any specific questions please feel free to respond and I will do my best to answer your questions Gods blessings Deacon Mike Archdiocese of Detroit

You know vdp I'm not even Catholic, but I'm horrified at what you've said above.
God listens to ALL prayer. No matter how it's said. Do you believe there's a set formula? Jesus gave us the Lord's prayer as an example. Do you think Catholics don't say the Lord's prayer? ALL prayer is satisfactory to God because in praying it is GOD that we are seeking out. HIS spirit.

Mass is worthless? Mass echoes the bible. Even the book of Revelation. Try reading a book called The Lamb's Supper to get a different perspective on that book. It doesn't only speak to the end times. I think you would find this book to be very beautiful and helpful. It's written by a former protestant, now a Catholic theologian and Apologist.

See. You could be catholic and become protestant, or V V. You're allowed. But when you leave one church for another, you should not denigrate the one you are leaving. It seems to me that Protestants also have a big problem: finding a church they like. Each one is different - some worship God and some DO NOT.

Let's let people pray how they wish to and not attempt to remove their faith. God will judge us on what we know and what we believed to be correct. He is, after all, a just God.

If you belonged to Church that recorded their sermons , what they believed. Actual records of their worship services, and you could go back 200 years and look at the sermon that the pastor from 1816 gave at Christmas service. Or how he conducted a baptism , wouldn't that be worthwhile?
When someone in your congregation challenged you on how to say do a bsptisn you could say well we have done it this way since 1816.
The Catholic Church has such records. But we don't go back 200 years or even 1000 years. We go back 2000 years to the apostles. As Catholics we can look at how a " worship service" was conducted in AD 70 and we have documentation of how the Church conducted it. Catholics can also see what the Church believed about baptism the Eucharist the priesthood. We can see that what Catholics believe today is essentially the same thing the Church in say 1300's believed or the Church in the 900's believed or even the Chrch in the 200's believed.
All this is very verifiable through patristics and I would be happy to share them with you if you do desire. I have no problem in how you choose to worship God. I wouldn't even call it wrong. But I would make sure you know what your talking about when you criticize another faith. We have been around along time. And there is not an objection out there that the Church has not run across and answered

The Catholic Church does not go back to the Apostles. This is a major lie from the Catholic Church. At best the Catholic Church only goes back to the 3rd century, not back to the Apostles.

How can the Catholic Church be a True Christian Church?? Do you not know in 1854 the Catholics proclaimed Mary to be sinless, to be equal to God?

Jesus was born sinless. Without sin.

2 Corinthians 5:21
[SUP]21[/SUP]He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.

Hebrew 4:15
[SUP]15 [/SUP]For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin.

Only Jesus was sinless, but yet the Catholic Church decided to ignore what God says to proclaim Mary as being without sin.

So how can anyone who Prays to Mary ever enter into Heaven???

Beware of the Leaven of the Catholics. All they want is to deceive the very Elect of God with their false Doctrines of Mary.

Actually I belong to the church that Jesus shed His blood on Calvary to purchase for Himself. I have the recorded word of God the bible as my authority for all that I do and believe. I have the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit to lead an guide me into all the truth of Gods word.

Historically the RCC has not been around since the apostles but began about 300 years after the apostles. Peter your proclaimed first pope was Jewish and had an aversion to Gentiles. James would have made a better choice but he too was Jewish. Paul the apostle to the Gentiles was also Jewish so the very biased history of Romanism clearly does not stand examination in the face of historical facts.

Care to address the scripture in John 9:31?

Sorry Fran, but you're sorely mistaken. God DOES NOT listen to prayers that are prayed to Mary, and he does NOT hear prayers that implore her to mediate to Jesus on our behalf. Mary cannot, and does not hear or answer prayers. There is only one mediator, and it's Jesus Christ. Not Mary. God hears prayers that are prayed DIRECTLY TO HIM. He does NOT hear the prayers of the Hail Mary's..

Dear HS
Catholics ask Mary to pray for us because as Christians we are called to pray for each other. It's that simple. Is Mary dead? Yes. But Catholics don't believe that death separates us from the love of God. In fact we don't believe Heaven is s dead place at all. We are more alive in Christ in Heaven than even on earth.
If you pray for others then you are acting as a mediator. Why would I ask you to pray for me when I can go straight to Jesus? Because we are called to do it

How is Mary going to pray for us if she is dead? Death doesn't separate from God's love. I am better off asking a live person to pray for me than a dead one like Mary.

Can you show me in the bible where it ststes those in Heaven can't hear us and intercede for us? Because I can show you a place in the bible where it specifically tells us the saints in Heaven can hear us
Turn yiu bible to Rev 5:8. John sees 24 elders
Falling down before the lamb each holding a harp and with golden bowls full of incense. Which are the prayers of the saints.
Also check Rev 8:3-4. An angel came and stood at the altar in heaven with a gold censer and he was given much incense to mingle with the prayers of all the saints upon the golden alter and the smoke of the incense rose with the prayers of the saints from the hand of The angel before God
As Christians we believe death does not seperste us from the love of God. Thst is a direct quote from Eph check it out.

What do you have? Eyewitness testimony from the lions that rent Christians for the enjoyment of the Romans? Perhaps journals from the gladiators that slew whole families in the arena to the cheers of the Romans?

Until Constantine made "Christianity" the state religion there was no organized Roman Catholic Church.

Know this the church that Jesus is building is not an organization but a living organism. The living church that Christ is building is not founded on Peter but on Christ Himself. Against this church even the gates of hell cannot prevail.

Your religion of rites and sacraments is no match for the church borne from the shed blood of Christ. The church who's hope is in the empty tomb. The tomb is empty because Christ is not there but ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father waiting till His enemies be made His footstool.

Dear Rodger
Actually I have about 8 volumes of early church writings which cover every subject in theology of the first 7 centuries of the Church. These are historical documents and are facts of history. The Chirch is rich in what's known as patristics
And includes homiles, instructions ancient Liturgical prayers and apologies on defense of Christisnity against early herasys.

Those passages probably mean the saints that are alive it doesn't say they are dead. I would pray straight to Jesus not to Mary.
