Since many medicinal herbs help by drinking them, and the best way to infuse their benefits is to steep them in hot water, I suspect they drank hot herbal teas even back then.
The Sabbath was instituted in Exodus 16. It was the seventh day from the first giving of the manna. It was a Day of Rest. In Exodus it was illustrated from the seventh day of creation. But there is no suggestion that it was on the same day, which would have been lost in time. There is no mention of observance of the Sabbath prior to Exodus 16.

The Sabbath was for ISRAEL.

It pictured the coming rest of Jesus Christ (Heb 4).

Rom 14.5-6 and Col 2.16 both make clear its secondary nature,
Can you guess my next question?

Hint: What did what you said have to do with what I said?

Honestly, I suspect you just clicked the wrong button, but just in case, I had to ask.

The actual Sabbath happened about two thousand years ago when Christ died on the cross. Now to keep Sabbath is actually a sin. Because you are saying this is what I do and not what God did. Is there not pride in keeping the Sabbath? I'm not saying don't go to church. By all means go. But if you think that keeping Sabbath make you holy or closer to God then you have made the cross of Christ of no effect.

All I actually wanted to know, is what day it's actually on.. All I keep getting for an answer is, that pretty much I get to choose my own sabbath. When I could go to church, I went on Sundays. Now that I can't get to church, I watch an online service streamed live from Florida.

it's true, what others have said, that the sabbath day according to the Jews is sundown on our 'friday' to sundown on our 'saturday'
i've read & been told that the Hebrew calendar Moses & the Israelites used was based on lunar cycles - unlike the Gregorian calendar we use today - so that what we call 'saturday' may or may not be the 'seventh day' if there had been an unbroken chain of observed sabbaths dating all the way back to those ancient times. as far as which day orthodox Jews today call the sabbath, definitely saturday (starting with nightfall on friday night, because they don't use midnight like we do to mark the change in days). so maybe what we call 'saturday' isn't the literal day. but as i'll explain, i don't think it matters.

i don't agree that sunday should be called the 'Christian sabbath' -- congregational worship and teaching and fellowship - which is basically what we use this day for - is not what sabbath observance has ever been about. now, lots and lots of people teach about sunday as if it is sabbath, and have for who knows how long, so maybe it's moot to refute ((haha that rhymes)) - but i don't think that is the correct way to understand either what we do on sundays traditionally or what the sabbath is, either the shadow that is the ritual observance, or the substance.

the shadow - the observance of sabbath - is ((simplistically)) not to do work. Jews, zealous to follow the laws to the utmost, expounded on the strictures given through Moses to include all kinds of actions that might be considered work. in the Bible, travelling a certain distance was forbidden, and kindling fire. scribes and rabbis explained the meaning of this to also imply that such things as handling an offering plate, passing it down the pew, would be violating the law too. so ((not to mention the American ritual of going out to eat after church)) calling sunday gatherings sabbath observance is fairly disrespectful to the letter of the law. ((yeah yeah, 'it's lawful to do good on the sabbath' - this is taken to the extreme too, don't you think?)).

the substance is Christ. the sabbath is rest. it is a symbol pointing to God's rest, as He rested from all His works - which have been finished since creation. Hebrews 4 says that we who believe do enter His rest. that whoever enters His rest ceases from 'his own' works. it points out that those who did not enter His rest were prohibited because of unbelief. not for lack of works, but unbelief.

see, to rest in Him - the sabbath - is not about doing works. the purpose of the sabbath ((thanks again HRFTD for pointing me at these verses, when i was trying to understand how to teach how love fulfills the sabbath law)) is to understand that the Lord is the One who sanctifies us -- not us. this is exactly what God tells us in scripture that the purpose is.

take a minute to read
Exodus 31:13 and Ezekiel 20:12 through the links, and another minute to think about what that means.

think about it -- what is the gospel of Jesus Christ and the mercy of God shown to us through His life, death and resurrection? that we trust in His grace, by believing on Him - not by works - we might have eternal life, our salvation from sin and death. when we enter into Christ, we set aside our own works, and are transformed by Him into new creatures, heart and mind now, and later on that day, also body, who are prepared to do His works. we 'cease from our own works' and enter His rest, purely by belief, and understand that it is God Almighty who sanctifies us.

this is what it means, to understand that Jesus Christ, Jehovah Sabaoth, is the sabbath. not taking a day off work. not driving out to chapel and singing a couple hymns and listening to a sermon. Christ. to be immersed in Him.

this isn't taught in most churches, but it is the truth, revealed by the Spirit. may you all be blessed with understanding and increase in the knowledge of God!!

:)

whoever honors saturday or sunday or every day for the sake of God, honors it for the sake of God, and no one should judge them for it. be convinced in your own minds, and do what you do for His sake.

The actual sabbath is Friday sundown to Saturday sundown because it is written: and the evening and the morning were the first day.

So the day starts in the evening, when the sun sets (goes down).

if evening and morning were referring to a day it would be missing out two important parts of the day,. it more probably is referring to the ending and beginning of daylight, i.e the evening and the morning with the day in between which would fit in with the definition of 'day' given in the passage.

Valiant, that is why, to the jews, the sabbath starts at Friday sundown and ends Saturday sundown; because of that Bible verse (which repeats for the 2nd day, the 3rd day, etc.). I was trying to answer the initial question of the post with the bible explanation.

The ancient Israelites used a lunar calendar, not the Gregorian (Roman) calendar that is used today. The first day of the month was on the new moon.

So the answer to the question of the OP is the actual Sabbath day according to the Jews is sundown on our Friday to sundown on our Saturday.

Sabbath-keeping [with all it's rules and regulations], was part of a covenant with Israel that is not applicable to Christians under the New Covenant and the Sabbath day did not change from Saturday to Sunday.

Christians worship God on Sunday (the Lord's Day), because the first day of the week became associated with Christ's resurrection (Matthew 28:1-10; Luke 24:1; John 20:1; Revelation 1:10).

We are not to get hung up on the Sabbath day, which is a shadow of things to come, but the substance belongs to Christ (Colossians 2:16-17).

Still on Sundays? Then I think you are a Sunday-Sabbather. Nothing wrong with that. And if it's another day of the week, nothing wrong with that either.

Genesis 2:2-3 And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made.
And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made. Ezekiel 22:26 Her priests have violated my law, and have profaned mine holy things: they have put no difference between the holy and profane, neither have they shewed difference between the unclean and the clean, and have hid their eyes from my sabbaths, and I am profaned among them. Ezekiel 44:24 And in controversy they shall stand in judgment; and they shall judge it according to my judgments: and they shall keep my laws and my statutes in all mine assemblies; and they shall hallow my sabbaths. Isaiah 58:13 If thou turn away thy foot from the sabbath, from doing thy pleasure on my holy day; and call the sabbath a delight, the holy of the LORD, honourable; and shalt honour him, not doing thine own ways, nor finding thine own pleasure, nor speaking thine own words:

The sabbath is simply a seventh day of every week. It is God's own day, He made that day during the time of earth creation right in the beginning before there was even a Jew or a gentile. God made this day as His for man. He made that day as a special time for God and His people to spend time together. Man is always busy day and night working on his things, but this time he must stop all thing/works and spend the time with God by doing everything godly, be it thoughts, words, discussions and deeds or activities. Note that the day, the seventh day sabbath is of God and is holy since God is Holy and because He also made it Holy just as God is. So the command is going to we humans whose deeds can affect the sabbath which is already holy by making it unholy through our deeds which may be contrary to this day. So, it is God's day NOT your day or my day, if you choose any other day, that is going to be your sabbath Not God's sabbath, and it will not be accepted as God's sabbath (for God's sabbath is the seventh day of the week only) for the commandment talks about God's resting day which is absolutely historically and biblically the seventh day of the week which is Saturday.

A rest of the seventh day sabbath of the week is typically a rest from real physical works NOT spiritual like rest. Hebrews 4:9-11 There remaineth therefore a (sabbath day) rest to the people of God.
For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his.
Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief. A command to rest on the seventh day Sabbath is still in effect until today, Hebrews is saying it clearly that therefore there remains NOT there ENDS.

Some say that the sabbath was in the old covenant, and we are in the new covenant, so the sabbath ended, that's not true, the MAIN difference between the old covenant and the new covenant is that, in the old covenant people were to look at the Law and put it into practice of which they failed. But in the new covenant God is writing that Law into the hearts of those who believe and are willing so that the Law becomes their character and behaviour. God has not ended His Law to suite with the sinful mankind, no! But He has come down and helped mankind by making it possible for man to do God's will by writing His will/law at the source of characters and behaviours of man through His spirit so that man will now suite with God.

Jeremiah 31:31-33 Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah:
Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they brake, although I was an husband unto them, saith the LORD:
But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people.

Jesus who taught the words sent from God himself, taught his disciples day and night, so if there would be a change, his disciples would be the very first ones to learn that change. But his disciples when Jesus died, treated the seventh day sabbath according to the Law NOT a spirit like staff. Luke 23:54-56 And that day was the preparation, and the sabbath drew on.
And the women also, which came with him from Galilee, followed after, and beheld the sepulchre, and how his body was laid.
And they returned, and prepared spices and ointments; and rested the sabbath day according to the commandment.

Colossians 2:4-23 And this I say, lest any man should beguile you with enticing words.
For though I be absent in the flesh, yet am I with you in the spirit, joying and beholding your order, and the stedfastness of your faith in Christ.
As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him:
Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving.
Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.
For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.
And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power:
In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ:
Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead.
And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses;
Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;
And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it.
Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days:
Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ.
Let no man beguile you of your reward in a voluntary humility and worshipping of angels, intruding into those things which he hath not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind,
And not holding the Head, from which all the body by joints and bands having nourishment ministered, and knit together, increaseth with the increase of God.
Wherefore if ye be dead with Christ from the rudiments of the world, why, as though living in the world, are ye subject to ordinances,
(Touch not; taste not; handle not;
Which all are to perish with the using;) after the commandments and doctrines of men?
Which things have indeed a shew of wisdom in will worship, and humility, and neglecting of the body; not in any honour to the satisfying of the flesh.

Read the chapter carefully, you will notice that Paul was talking to new born again Christians, he was talking to people who had experienced a new covenant process in which God write His Law into the hearts and the end result is that one lives according to the Law of God. Jeremiah 31:34 And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the LORD: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the LORD: for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more. So, in the new covenant people just live by the Laws of God for they are inside them, people no longer need to be taught. So Paul was telling these people to have confidence in what they became, to believe in what they were living for they were then living already according to God's Laws, they did not need to be taught any more for christ living in them would tell them how to live and control their lives, so the art art of teaching the Laws of God pointed to the teacher Jesus Christ who was to come, and now that that teacher

The sabbath is Saturday. We are no longer under the sabbath, nor any other Old Testament laws, unless Christ reinstated them. We are under Sunday, the first day of the week. The last day of the week was to commemorate a finished creation, the first day of the week is to commemorate a finished redemption. Jesus rose from the grave on a Sunday morning and so saved us. We are to partake of His body and blood (Lords Supper) upon the first day of the week- this is our covenant in the New Testament. We are to lay aside our offering to God on the first day of the week. On the first day of the week we are to assemble together with the saints, sing praises to God, pray, and listen to a sermon (have church).

Numbers 10:10 Also at your times of rejoicing—your appointed festivals and New Moon feasts—you are to sound the trumpets over your burnt offerings and fellowship offerings, and they will be a memorial for you before your God. I am the Lord your God.”

Hosea 2:11 I will stop all her celebrations: her yearly festivals, her New Moons, her Sabbath days—all her appointed festivals.

Colossians 2:16 Therefore do not let anyone judge you by what you eat or drink, or with regard to a religious festival, a New Moon celebration or a Sabbath day.

Romans 4:15 because the law brings wrath. And where there is no law there is no transgression.

The laws were remove in order for us to live. According to the laws, if you have violated just one, like Adam and Eve, them you will be considered as if you has violated them all. And in order to be redeemed, that you must die. And so, since there is no laws to follow, then there's no sinners. But if any one doesn't want the laws to be removed and want to judge others by the laws, then will God reinstate it just for you; that you will pay back for every cent that you owe, and which the price of sin is death.

Matthew 18:35 “This is how my heavenly Father will treat each of you unless you forgive your brother or sister from your heart.”

Matthew 18:32 “Then the master called the servant in. ‘You wicked servant,’ he said, ‘I canceled all that debt of yours because you begged me to. 33 Shouldn’t you have had mercy on your fellow servant just as I had on you?’ 34 In anger his master handed him over to the jailers (devil) to be tortured, until he should pay back all he owed. (Death is eternal)

Does the Bible say we have to worship on the Sabbath, or does it simply say we are supposed to do no work on the Sabbath?

Of course, you are opening up a huge argument here, I’m guessing. That’s the way it usually turns out when we discuss this topic. Some people have really strong opinions about this.

My own belief is that the purpose of the Sabbath is to give us a day of rest each week. It can be any day of the week. If you can’t rest for a full day, then rest for two half days.

Jesus said this:

[27] And he said to them, "The sabbath was made for man, not man for the sabbath;
[28] so the Son of man is lord even of the sabbath." Mark 2:27-28 RSV
This says it best. The religious legalists (those who were obsessed with the letter of the law) made Jesus and John the Baptist so angry that they called them a "brood of vipers," I don't mean to sound angry, but many people make such an issue out of the day of the Sabbath, that it becomes an idol to them. They prefer to worship the day, rather than the LORD. It does not make one rat's of a difference, really. Jesus came to free us from such ridiculous nonsense. If you want to worship Saturday, then become a Muslim.

[/B] That's the question I'm asking. :) My family and I always went to church on Sunday's. However, I know some people go on Saturdays or Wednesdays. So what is the actual Sabbath on? And does it matter to God what day we do worship on? Bible verses would be helpful.

Well, Blue Ladybug, if you read for yourself you will know the answer without asking others whom my lead you astray. The bible is the best source for information. It does tells you the answer.

Genesis 2:
2 And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made.3 And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.

Exodus 20:
8 Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.9 Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work:
10 But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates:
11 For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.

My own belief is that the purpose of the Sabbath is to give us a day of rest each week. It can be any day of the week. If you can’t rest for a full day, then rest for two half days.

As for you Resurrection33, your belief is not important because afterall, the bible tell us to lean not on our own understanding.

Proverb 3:
5 Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.

If it was not important which day we are to take rest, then he would not have been specific on which day. He states it in the beginning and then he puts it in the ten commandments and again specifies a particular day. God was very clear on how important it is to keep the Sabbath.

Exodus 31:
14 Ye shall keep the sabbath therefore; for it is holy unto you: every one that defileth it shall surely be put to death: for whosoever doeth any work therein, that soul shall be cut off from among his people.
15 Six days may work be done; but in the seventh is the sabbath of rest, holy to the LORD: whosoever doeth any work in the sabbath day, he shall surely be put to death.
16 Wherefore the children of Israel shall keep the sabbath, to observe the sabbath throughout their generations, for a perpetual covenant.
17 It is a sign between me and the children of Israel for ever: for in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, and on the seventh day he rested, and was refreshed.

Sound pretty important to me, failure to keep it yields the death penalty!!!

Does the Bible say we have to worship on the Sabbath, or does it simply say we are supposed to do no work on the Sabbath?
We supposed to be Christ like, called Christians and Jesus went to the synagogue on Sabbath and worship. And so did his disciples.

Luke 4:
16 And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read.

Acts 17:
1 Now when they had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where was a synagogue of the Jews:
2 And Paul, as his manner was, went in unto them, and three sabbath days reasoned with them out of the scriptures,

Mark1:
17 And Jesus said unto them, Come ye after me, and I will make you to become fishers of men.
21 And they went into Capernaum; and straightway on the sabbath day he entered into the synagogue, and taught.

So, yes the Bible does by action of both Christ and his disciples.

Jesus said this:

[27] And he said to them, "The sabbath was made for man, not man for the sabbath;
[28] so the Son of man is lord even of the sabbath." Mark 2:27-28 RSV
Yes, but this doesn't change the day, it is actually talking about the 7th day, the Sabbath day, it did not say Sunday! What do this have t do with the question at hand?

Shalom,

Jayoish
