THEY ALSO SET ASIDE THIER EARNINGS TO BE TAKEN UP ON THIS F I R S T DAY.
What Was This COLLECTION on the first day week?

1 Corinthians 16:2: “Upon the first day of the week let every one of you
lay by him in store, as God hath prospered him.…”

Often we see this text printed on the little offering envelopes in the pews of popular
churches, and we have been told that this text sets the first day of the week as the time
for taking up the church collection for the carrying on of God’s work, paying the minister, etc.

the true intended meaning of this verse.

“Now concerning the collection for the saints, as I have given order to the churches of Galatia,
even so do ye. Upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store,
as God hath prospered him, that there be no gatherings when I come.”

This speaks of a collection—but for whom—for what? Note it! Not for the preacher
—not for evangelism—but “the collection for the saints.” The poor saints at Jerusalem
were suffering from drought and famine. They needed, not money, but food.

Notice Paul had given similar instruction to other churches.
Now observe his instruction to the Romans:

“But now I go unto Jerusalem to minister unto the saints. For it hath pleased them
of Macedonia and Achaia [where the Corinthian church was located] to make a certain
contribution for the poor saints which are at Jerusalem.

When therefore I have performed this, and have sealed to them this fruit,
I will come by you into Spain” (Romans 15:25-28).

It was not money, but fruit that was being sealed for shipment to the poor saints
at Jerusalem! (The Greek word can also refer to grain, wine, and other produce
which can be stored a long time without spoiling.)

Paul is speaking concerning a collection for the saints.
Upon the first day of the week each one of them is instructed to do what? Look at it!
Does it say drop a coin in the collection plate at a church service? Not at all!

It says, “L]et every one of you lay by him in STORE.” Note it! Lay by! Store up!
Store up by himself—at home! Not lay by at the church house—lay by him—at home.

Now why? “That there be no gatherings when I come.” Men gather fruit out of the orchard
—they gather vegetables out of the ground, to be stored up. But putting coins in a collection
plate at church, or handing in your tithe envelope could not be called a gathering,
but an offering or collection.

Notice further: “And when I come, whomsoever ye shall approve by your letters,
them will I send to bring your liberality unto Jerusalem. And if it be meet that I go also,
they [more than one] shall go with me” (verses 3-4).

Apparently it was going to require several men to carry this collection, gathered and stored up,
to Jerusalem. If it were tithe or offering for the minister or the spread of the gospel,
Paul could have carried the money alone.

in the Bible where we find “the first day of the week” mentioned, it is a workday

—a day for gathering fruit and food out of the orchards and the fields and gardens,
and storing it up. It was to be the first labor of the week, hence the first day of the week,
as soon as the Sabbath was past!

So did God go back to work on day 8 and then rest again on day 14 because it is blessed?

No.

This is a straw man, It proves nothing and informs nothing. You are trying to argue with what is not said against what is said. Does not make sense to me.

Its Rest that is blessed.

I can only assume you did not read the bible that I quoted that very clearly says the 7th day is blessed.

Not every other 7th day.

The commandment which is a reminder that God blessed and made the 7th day Holy shows that it was a perpetual thing, In fact if you study what happens when God blesses something you will understand that it continues every 7th day.

Coming to Christ is blessed.

Indeed, not really anything to do with what we are talking about. Except I do question one who says they come to Christ yet call what He blessed common.

Receiving Rest from God is blessed.

He spoke of the 7th day in this wise, and again they shall never enter my rest.

Saturday is just another day of the week. Cartoon day...

So you do indeed call what Jesus has blessed and made holy common.

For Christians who have come to Christ and have received Rest and are dead to the law and alive to God.

The Sabbath is pre-law in Gen 2, its pre-sin so its actually Good. Jesus said it was made for man. But hey if you want to reject what he gave you that is your choice. When I came to Christ I accepted his Lordship and delight to obey Him and accept His gifts.

What is blessed is what God gives us, personally. Create a clean heart in me, O Lord. Cause me to follow your statutes... The lawyers and legalists fail to realize that this is a direct reference to the Spirit and the fruit of the Spirit.

Our will in trying to follow these things doesn't work out. All we do is attempt to define the Spiritual so the carnal can keep it. Unless God gives it to us it is futile.

The Sabbath is not carnal It is spiritual, why would you call something God made holy and gifted to mankind and blessed carnal? Sad really. Is not murdering carnal? is not bearing false witness carnal? no of course not.

The Law is Spiritual. How is the 4th commandment of 'keeping' a sabbath every saturday spiritual? Is not murdering someone spiritual?

Really you are going to ask how the Sabbath which is part of the law which is spiritual. you are going to ask how it is spiritual? really?

Who did it come form? who made it? who blessed it? who set it apart as holy? and you call it carnal and not spiritual.
I am sorry but you are not addressing the issue at all.

Why do you think they don't understand?
Why can they not see the spiritual reality
Its like you have two types of religion running parallel to one another.
One type has something missing and one type doesn't.
For me the answer must be the holy spirit. How people can focus on a set day, rather than every day seems to show lifeless religion to me. The letter must be followed not the holy spirit who leads into freedom and true spiritual worship
I suppose it isn't so hard to understand where non mainline churches are concerned. I went to one to please a friend for a few weeks. My overriding impression was. Where is the holy spirit?
The people were nice and friendly, but something huge was missing. It was just religion without the fulness of the holy spirit being reflected in the church in my view
But how can the holy spirits presence be manifest when people look to the literal letter and seek to rigidly follow it to lead holy lives of obedience?
I guess I just wonder why some go to church and up this way while others dont

James, if I may ask you something. Are you a follower of Jesus Christ? Are you in covenant with him because if you are you will know that He kept the Sabbath and there is nothing wrong with keeping the Sabbath.

It should be the easiest answer in the world to "Why do I keep the Sabbath?" Because Jesus and his disciples did it.

Good morning Gandalf

I'm not starting another conversation with you about this. I simply asked someone's opinion about something. If you have a problem with my view under the new covenant you have a problem with Paul's view also. If you wont listen to him why would I think you would listen to me?
God bless

You know what fascinates me?

Take you an me for instance. We disagree on things clearly.
yet we use the same book as our base.

We both honestly think we are doing what is right and both honestly think the other is wrong. We both think we are the ones who honestly use the scripture and both think the other does not.

That to me is truly fascinating I am not joking by the way. Only the Spirit can lead into all truth we both believe that yet we both believe we are led by the Spirit and the other at least to some degree is not.

Yet we both can't be right, its possible we are both wrong but impossible that we are both right.

I have often thought on this kind of thing and often asked myself the question am I the deluded one, Often I ask God to open my eyes as I imagine you would do. I spend hours in prayer daily not cause I have to but because it is the sweetest time of my whole day as I imagine you do. I spend much time in prayer and bible study asking God to open my eyes to the meaning as I imagine you do.

yet so different views on the same book. It tells me one thing for sure. We can't rely on human wisdom.

In the end the only safe place I have found is to constantly trust in Jesus to reveal the way, to constantly question my own motives by looking to Him. There is a peace in Christ that can not be explained.

we are fragile beings to say the least.

You are right. We cannot both be right.
For instance, I don't believe a person can dwell with God in heaven if they haven't received eternal life, you do. I cannot understand how you came to that conclusion. So either you or I are being led of the holy spirit in truth concerning that. Just one example.

If it's a matter of preference or individual conviction, then there's no issue whatsoever. Romans 14 gives that liberality.

I know that strict Sabbathkeepers will deny that Romans 14 refers to the Sabbath, but I don't personally care what they deny. It's obvious that the church at Rome was mixed in terms of Jews and Gentiles and these issues would arise. :)

By the way I regularly pray for God to expose doctrinal error in my life too, so you aren't the only one :)

One thing we should always keep in mind is that the Bible is translated from Hebrew and Greek to English. In this fact the enemy opened the door for interpretations and also because times have changed so much. Most of the time we don't understand what the Biblical people did and why...

The above would not be allowing for the holy spirit to convict a person of truth concerning what they read. It would solely be relying on human logic and reasoning to understand the literal word

But what you are telling people is that Paul was teaching contradicting doctrines than what is written in the rest of the Bible. Have you ever considered that you might make a mistake in some of your interpretations or is that beyond reasoning for today?

But we should understand the word because we are warned against a lack of knowledge. That is Biblical.

Paul was teaching the new covenant. If you can give me one verse of scripture from the entire new testament ( covenant) that states gentiles must observe a specific Saturday Sabbath I will of course accept you are right and i am wrong. Can you?

Please answer that question, don't ignore it and just ask another one

In order to understand the word we have to rely on the holy spirit to lead ys into truth
I learnt the message of grace through reading the living bible, hardly for purists, but the holy spirit convicted me of the truth of grace. Before that I was in reality living under the old covenant at its core

Jesus said that we should keep His commandments and we know God is not changing. Is that not enough for you?

God tells us in His word there is one truth. It is not possible to have more than one truth because that is mixing the seed and God will not mix the seed. Unfortunately the conclusion must be that somebody is wrong and we should trust the Holy Spirit to guide us in truth.

So from your reply you acknowledge there is not one verse of scripture in the nt that states I must observe a specific seventh day Sabbath, you just didn't want to come out and state that

The real question is why is keeping Sabbath important, other than just the health benefit? What Was, Is and Will be the point of it? What Was, Is not, but Will Be the point of HIS Holy Days? Was it a day of the week named after pagan fairytale characters that people argue over?

It's a small and BIG answer. All sin, but Right Sabbath keeping was a main indicator of GOD'S True People (which isn't a piece of dirt, but rather a People, which is currently scattered, but will gather to meet in the air/spirit/thought very, very Suun.

But neither you nor go tine relies on the holy spirit to lead you into truth, you both hinge everything on the literal letter. The Pharisees of Jesus day knew the literal letter inside out( I am not saying you are a pharisee) but that didn't mean the knew the truth does it
You both rely on the literal letter to know Gods laws, yet it is clear as day written that law has been placed within you. Therefore if the holy spirit was leading you both you wouldn't rely on the literal letter to know what sin is would you.
So of course go time is dumbfounded as to why he and I see things so differently. He has a religion of looking to the literal letter i have one of relying on the holy spirit to reveal the truth of what that letter contains.
It isn't about being better than anyone else, but who or what you rely on in the faith
