I always thought that when Paul says the law of faith in Romans 3: 27 that he meant law as in principle. He is making a play on the word law. first he speaks of the law of Moses, meaning a set of rules. then he talks about the law of faith meaning not a set of rules based on faith but the principle of faith. I think that fits fully with the context of the entire chapter and Romans in general.

http://biblehub.com/greek/3551.htm
Men are given instructions by God Dan. "Follow Me" "Leave your Father, your lands, your belief, and "Trust Me". "Turn to ME. Listen to ME.

From the very beginning this is so. The entire Bible is filled with examples of those who listened and obeyed, and those who listened, yet chose not to obey.

I don't think Paul was playing Word Games. I think he fully understood the difference between the "Works of the Law" given by Moses for the justification of sins until the Seed should come, and the Commandments of God He created for the good of all mankind.

i think what is being expressed by this phrase could be summed up by this one word: "anyone who believes in Him will never be put to shame" -- quoted in Romans 10:11 and with reference to a score of sayings in the prophets.

this is law, in the sense of natural law: it is impossible that it be broken, because the One who ordained it is the One who upholds it, and He is forever faithful, even when we are faithless.

as a poet has said, "the law is the law and everybody on earth obeys it" -- saying 'law' not as a regulation to be judged under, but as immutable truth.
yes, same idea as natural law, immutable truth.

and it fits perfectly with the context.

I think the highlighted is a perfect summary of the Law and Prophets. How, and more importantly, WHY would I attempt to add or take away from that.

I believe in the Word which became Flesh and I am not ashamed to follow His instructions even if others refuse.
what does the word which became flesh say is the law and the prophets? Do not judge, so that you won't be judged. 2For with whatever judgment you judge, you will be judged; and with whatever measure you measure, it will be measured to you. 3 And why do you see the speck that is in your brother's eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? 4 Or how will you tell your brother, 'Let me remove the speck from your eye;' and look, the log is in your own eye? 5 You hypocrite. First remove the log out of your own eye, and then you can see clearly to remove the speck out of your brother's eye. 6 "Do not give that which is holy to the dogs, neither throw your pearls before the pigs, or they will trample them under their feet and turn and tear you to pieces. 7 "Ask, and it will be given to you. Seek, and you will find. Knock, and it will be opened for you. 8 For everyone who asks receives. He who seeks finds. To him who knocks it will be opened. 9 Or who is there among you, who, if his son will ask him for bread, will give him a stone? 10 Or if he will ask for a fish, who will give him a serpent? 11 If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him. 12Therefore whatever you desire for people to do to you, do also to them; for this is the Law and the Prophets. 13 "Enter in by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and many are those who enter in by it. 14How narrow is the gate, and difficult is the way that leads to life. Few are those who find it. 15"Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly are ravening wolves. 16 By their fruits you will know them. Do you gather grapes from thorns, or figs from thistles? 17 Even so, every good tree produces good fruit; but the corrupt tree produces evil fruit. 18 A good tree cannot produce evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree produce good fruit. 19 Every tree that does not grow good fruit is cut down, and thrown into the fire. 20 Therefore, by their fruits you will know them. 21 Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter into the Kingdom of Heaven; but he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. 22Many will tell me in that day, 'Lord, Lord, did not we prophesy in your name, in your name cast out demons, and in your name do many mighty works?' 23 And then I will tell them, 'I never knew you. Depart from me, you who practice lawlessness.'24 "Everyone therefore who hears these words of mine, and does them, will be compared to a wise man, who built his house on a rock. 25 And the rain came down, the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock. 26And everyone who hears these words of mine, and does not do them will be like a foolish man, who built his house on the sand. 27 And the rain came down, the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat on that house; and it fell—and great was its fall." 28 And it happened, when Jesus had finished saying these things, that the crowds were astonished at his teaching,29 for he taught them with authority, and not like their scribes. do you wish help?

I don't think he was playing word games, I think he was making a play on a word. Paul is known to do this. I appeal to you for my child, whom I have become the father of in my chains, Onesimus, 11 who once was useless to you, but now is useful to you and to me. 12 I am sending back to you, him who is my very heart, 13 whom I desired to keep with me, that on your behalf he might serve me in my chains for the Good News.14 But I was willing to do nothing without your consent, that your goodness would not be as of necessity, but of free will. there's an example.

I think too it's important to follow God's instructions according to his ways
Whether not this is more the fasting, which I choose? Unbind thou the bindings together of unpity, either of cruelty, release thou [the] burdens pressing down; deliver thou them free, that be broken, and break thou each burden.

Unbind thou the bindings together of unpity
Amen to that!

yes, no word games.
so he certainly could have used the word "commandments" if he meant to say it.
and he certainly would have referred to "the Law" in plural instead of the ubiquitous singular tense, if he considered it to be a mish-mash of holy and profane statutes to be broken apart into things to be judged under and things to ignore.

a quality of language fidelity the modern mainstream legalist judaizers don't seem to share.

The site demands that I break this post into some parts.

I was talking specifically about the idea of whether Paul when he says the law of faith means a set of rules or the principal of faith. Paul begins the letter to Romans by talking about how getting right with God is all about faith from start to finish. A righteous person lives by faith. For I shame not the gospel, for it is the virtue of God into health to each man that believeth, to the Jew first, and to the Greek. For the rightwiseness of God is showed in it, of faith into faith, as it is written, For a just man liveth of faith.
What is Faith? Believing in things we can not see?

How did Eve show her Faith VS. How did Abraham show his Faith. Neither one could possibly have "SEEN" the reason or justification, or purpose of the instruction. Yet one believed enough to adhere to His Word, while the other was convinced in their own mind to reject it.

Paul explains the difference in Rom 1.

21 Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.
22 Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,

This is in part, the summary of the Law and Prophets. Abraham "glorified God as God,

"Because that Abraham obeyed my voice, and kept my charge, my commandments, my statutes, and my laws." (Not his own)

while Eve Glorified her own vision as god and rejected the instruction.

"And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.

If we can come to terms with what God's Definition of Faith is, and the people who He attributed it to, and use these examples which were written for our admonition, it changes how we look at God and His Word's.

to say then that Paul is advocating merely setting aside The Works of one set of rules and instead doing the works or activities of a different set of rules to me seem strange.
It's not strange at all to accept that God placed rules for the remission of sins until the time was right, in His Eyes, to send what the "works of the Law" foreshadowed.

And it's perfectly understanding how a religion which had created their own doctrines, had lost sight of the meaning of these "works of the Law". But Paul still had to deal with this Mainstream religion which had been in power for centuries. And it's not like the Law and Prophets didn't prepare him for these preachers. It was all prophesied and happened exactly as the Word, through His Prophets, said it would happen.

Because most of your knowledge of the Word comes through organized religion, at least this is what I have gathered given the content of your posts, it does seem strange to you. Just like the Law and Prophets true teaching was "Heresy" to the Mainstream Preachers of Christ's time. You might consider this for a moment.

It doesn't seem to follow. so when we come to Romans 3: 27, to me it's obvious that the law of Faith refers to principal of faith.
How can I have the Faith of Abraham, without the Works of Abraham? Like the Bible says, I can't.

This is fully in keeping with the Greek word which is translated law, because in the Greek it does not have a definite article with it. this indicates it most likely refers to the idea of principle, rather than a set of rules. the whole idea is that no one's activities are suitable for making a person right with God. so instead, it's based on believing.
To men who don't trust God enough to "take a leap of Faith" and do as He says, this may be true. But the whole lesson of the Bible is the difference between following God, or following our own mind. The Bible says we will be judged by our activities. If we "Practice iniquity" which means to transgress God's "rules", then we will be judged one way. If we submit to God and His Righteousness (repent) with all our hearts and with all our minds, we are judged another way.

There is only one reason why we are not right with God. "Our Activities"!!!

I'm not sure how you can not see this, yet Jesus Him Self said it would be this way.

this brings us to the idea of keeping Jesus' Commandments because we love him. every Christian is in favor of this, because everyone would agree that we ought to do what Jesus tells us to do, and telling someone to do something would be a commandment. of course some people will say that they want to follow Jesus and do what he says, but they don't really. But I'm not talking about them.
Well you should be. Jesus warned over and over about this very thing. It was very important to Him for us to understand the inclination for men to desire the Gift of immortality without denying our self as Jesus instructed. "Many" call Him Lord, yet don't do what He says, choosing the traditions of religious man instead. The idea that you have somehow been convinced that you don't need to worry about these things, or "Take Heed" as the Christ instructed is dangerous in my view, given how "many" are said to be on the broad path.

These on the broad path to destruction, do you believe they know they are on the path to destruction? Or have they been deceived as Eve was, they will surely not be destroyed?

I'm talking about people who are serious about following Christ. the only difference is come about because people disagree on of the things that Jesus talked about, which of them does he want us today to keep
.

This may be true with you, but not with me. What I see are major deceptions which are the foundation of mainstream doctrines. To keep this day or that Law isn't the focus of my posts. To reveal the foundational lies that religious men are held in bondage to is why I spend my time on this forum.

The teaching that the Jews were trying to earn Salvation by obeying God's Law to the letter is an insidious lie that creates a false foundation for so many mainstream Christian doctrines, and your as well Dan. This religious doctrine, created by man, is the foundation of the belief that God's Laws are a burden and a Yoke of Bondage. That Jesus saved us from God's Commandments because "look what keeping them did for the Pharisees"? If a man comes to terms with the Biblical Truth that the Mainstream Preachers of Christ's Time did not have "Faith" in God as Abraham did. That they did not believe in God as Zechariahs did. Then your entire belief changes. When a man harbors lies about God's Word it does not make them see, rather, it blinds them.

And God sends the truth to anyone who asks for it, but the truth isn't pleasant sometimes so man prefers the lie. It's all there in the Bible.

22 Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,
23 And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things.

there was actually a broad-spectrum to choose from. Then Jesus spoke to the multitudes and to his disciples, 2 saying, “The scribes and the Pharisees sat on Moses’ seat. 3 All things therefore whatever they tell you to observe, observe and do, but don’t do their works; for they say, and don’t do.
He said the same thing He has always said. Listen and follow the instructions of God, not religious man.

4 For they bind heavy burdens that are grievous to be borne, and lay them on men’s shoulders; but they themselves will not lift a finger to help them. 5 But all their works they do to be seen by men. They make their phylacteries[a]broad, enlarge the fringes of their garments, 6 and love the place of honor at feasts, the best seats in the synagogues, 7 the salutations in the marketplaces, and to be called ‘Rabbi, Rabbi’ by men. 8 But don’t you be called ‘Rabbi,’ for one is your teacher, the Christ, and all of you are brothers. 9 Call no man on the earth your father, for one is your Father, he who is in heaven. 10 Neither be called masters, for one is your master, the Christ. 11 But he who is greatest among you will be your servant. 12 Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.

13 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you devour widows’ houses, and as a pretense you make long prayers. Therefore you will receive greater condemnation.

14 “But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! Because you shut up the Kingdom of Heaven against men; for you don’t enter in yourselves, neither do you allow those who are entering in to enter.[c]15 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you travel around by sea and land to make one proselyte; and when he becomes one, you make him twice as much of a son of Gehenna[d] as yourselves.

16 “Woe to you, you blind guides, who say, ‘Whoever swears by the temple, it is nothing; but whoever swears by the gold of the temple, he is obligated.’ 17 You blind fools! For which is greater, the gold, or the temple that sanctifies the gold?18 ‘Whoever swears by the altar, it is nothing; but whoever swears by the gift that is on it, he is obligated?’19 You blind fools! For which is greater, the gift, or the altar that sanctifies the gift? 20 He therefore who swears by the altar, swears by it, and by everything on it. 21 He who swears by the temple, swears by it, and by him who was living[e] in it.22 He who swears by heaven, swears by the throne of God, and by him who sits on it.

23 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint, dill, and cumin,[f] and have left undone the weightier matters of the law: justice, mercy, and faith. But you ought to have done these, and not to have left the other undone.24 You blind guides, who strain out a gnat, and swallow a camel!

25 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and unrighteousness.[g]26 You blind Pharisee, first clean the inside of the cup and of the platter, that its outside may become clean also.

27 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitened tombs, which outwardly appear beautiful, but inwardly are full of dead men’s bones, and of all uncleanness.28 Even so you also outwardly appear righteous to men, but inwardly you are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.

29 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you build the tombs of the prophets, and decorate the tombs of the righteous,30 and say, ‘If we had lived in the days of our fathers, we wouldn’t have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.’31 Therefore you testify to yourselves that you are children of those who killed the prophets.
Quite a message about a religion "many" on this forum preach were trying to "Earn" Salvation but Keeping God's commandments.

23 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.

These 3 "matters of the Law", have you spent any time looking into what they might be? Does the entire Law of God, minus the Levitical Priesthood, fit into these 3 categories?

Many say we are already in God’s new covenant that was prophesied in the OT and in Acts/Hebrews.

Heb. 8:7-13 “For if that first covenant had been faultless, then should no place have been sought for the second. For finding fault with them, he saith, Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah: Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt; because they continued not in my covenant, and I regarded them not, saith the Lord. For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people: And they shall not teach every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord: for all shall know me, from the least to the greatest. For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more. In that he saith, A new covenant, he hath made the first old. Now that which decayeth and waxeth old is ready to vanish away.”

Jer. 31:31-34 “Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah: Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they brake, although I was an husband unto them, saith the LORD: But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people. And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the LORD: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the LORD: for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.

Do you see the direct link between Jerimiah and Hebrews? What about the parallels in Acts and Joel?

Acts 2:16-18 “But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel; And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams: And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy:”

First a time frame in Joel: Joel 2:1 “Blow ye the trumpet in Zion, and sound an alarm in my holy mountain: let all the inhabitants of the land tremble: for the day of the LORD cometh, for it is nigh at hand;”

Next, it speaks of a restoration after the Day of the Lord. Then, we are given a picture of the new covenant: Joel 2:28, 29 “And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions: And also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my spirit.”

What can we conclude from this? This is not the New Testament covenant God was talking about. Not yet.
I agree that there are parts of the prophesies about Jesus and the end time yet to be fulfilled. But it's pretty hard to say the Priesthood hasn't changed as the Word promised in Jer. 31. There is no more Priesthood to filter God's Word. We have it right in our home now. And there is no Priesthood to atone for our sins, Jesus has already done this for the repentant. So the new covenant mentioned in Jer. 31 and Heb 7-10 have come to pass in my opinion. It's just that religious man have added to it in order to justify their own man made traditions.

I think Joel is speaking more about the coming Kingdom as Isaiah speaks to in 66. And Jesus talks about in Matt. 13.

41 The Son of man shall send forth his angels, and they shall gather out of his kingdom all things that offend, and them which do iniquity;
42 And shall cast them into a furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth.

43 Then shall the righteous shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Who hath ears to hear, let him hear.

22 For as the new heavens and the new earth, which I will make, shall remain before me, saith the LORD, so shall your seed and your name remain.
23 And it shall come to pass, that from one new moon to another, and from one sabbath to another, shall all flesh come to worship before me, saith the LORD.

24 And they shall go forth, and look upon the carcases of the men that have transgressed against me: for their worm shall not die, neither shall their fire be quenched; and they shall be an abhorring unto all flesh.

You might be right about this, but I have always thought the Jer. 31 New Covenant was more about the manner in which we receive His Laws, and the manner in which sin are forgiven, that the end times.

I can certainly see how you might think this way though.

this sounds to me very much like the principal of faith. in the current post you mentioned loving God with all your heart, true a good idea. and yes the law and the prophets teach us how to do this, by basically doing unto others. and yes the law and the prophets are still here. Their goal is teaching us to do onto others. That's the goal of the law and the prophets. does this lead to any absolute rules? As far as activities go? I would say no. There will always be times places, exceptions wear something must be done that breaks the letter of the law but keeps the spirit of doing unto others. Now we, brothers, as Isaac was, are children of promise. 29 But as then, he who was born according to the flesh persecuted him who was born according to the Spirit, so also it is now. 30 However what does the Scripture say? “Throw out the servant and her son, for the son of the servant will not inherit with the son of the free woman.”[c] 31 So then, brothers, we are not children of a servant, but of the free woman. Stand firm therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and don’t be entangled again with a yoke of bondage. 2 Behold, I, Paul, tell you that if you receive circumcision, Christ will profit you nothing. 3 Yes, I testify again to every man who receives circumcision, that he is a debtor to do the whole law. 4 You are alienated from Christ, you who desire to be justified by the law. You have fallen away from grace. 5 For we, through the Spirit, by faith wait for the hope of righteousness. 6 For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision amounts to anything, nor uncircumcision, but faith working through love. 7 You were running well! Who interfered with you that you should not obey the truth? 8 This persuasion is not from him who calls you. 9 A little yeast grows through the whole lump. 10 I have confidence toward you in the Lord that you will think no other way. But he who troubles you will bear his judgment, whoever he is. so yes let us follow God's set of rules and find rest for our souls.
Here is the law spoken of. There are 613 laws scattered through the Torah.

There is a big quote box, and ones in side that are your quotes. I keep forgetting to delete that last "quote" at the end of the page. The message is still there for anyone who is interested in reading it. I will try to not forget it next time.

For we previously warned both Jews and Greeks, that they are all under sin. 10 As it is written, "There is no one righteous; no, not one." 11"There is no one who understands. There is no one who seeks after God. 12They have all turned aside. They have together become unprofitable. There is no one who does good, there is not even one." 13 "Their throat is an open tomb. With their tongues they have used deceit." "Viper's poison is under their lips;"
it's my understanding that no one keeps God's Commandments. see
14"Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness." 15"Their feet are swift to shed blood. 16 Destruction and calamity are in their paths. 17 The way of peace, they have not known." 18"There is no fear of God before their eyes." 19 Now we know that whatever things the law says, it speaks to those who are under the law, that every mouth may be closed, and all the world may be brought under the judgment of God. 20Because by the works of the law, no flesh will be justified in his sight. For through the law comes the knowledge of sin. 21 But now apart from the law, a righteousness of God has been revealed, being testified by the Law and the Prophets; 22 even the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ to all and upon all who believe.

I have spent lots of time looking into the law.
The LORD's Law is perfect, restoring the soul. The LORD's testimony is sure, making wise the simple. 8The LORD's precepts are right, rejoicing the heart. The LORD's commandment is pure, enlightening the eyes. 9 The fear of the LORD is clean, enduring forever. The LORD's ordinances are true, and righteous altogether. 10More to be desired are they than gold, yes, than much fine gold; sweeter also than honey and the extract of the honeycomb.11 Moreover by them is your servant warned. In keeping them there is great reward. 12 Who can discern his errors? Forgive me from hidden errors. 13Keep back your servant also from presumptuous sins. Let them not have dominion over me. Then I will be upright. I will be blameless and innocent of great transgression. 14 Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight always, LORD, my rock and my redeemer.
I'm not terribly interested in dividing them into categories. it's my understanding that you keep the whole law or you keep the law not at all.
For what great nation is there, that has a god so near to them, as the LORD our God is whenever we call on him? 8 What great nation is there, that has statutes and ordinances so righteous as all this law, which I set before you this day? 9 Only take heed to yourself, and keep your soul diligently, lest you forget the things which your eyes saw, and lest they depart from your heart all the days of your life; but make them known to your children and your children's children; 10 the day that you stood before the LORD your God in Horeb, when the LORD said to me, "Assemble me the people, and I will make them hear my words, that they may learn to fear me all the days that they live on the earth, and that they may teach their children."11 You came near and stood under the mountain; and the mountain burned with fire to the heart of the sky, with darkness, cloud, and thick darkness. 12 The LORD spoke to you out of the midst of the fire: you heard the voice of words, but you saw no form; you only heard a voice. 13 He declared to you his covenant, which he commanded you to perform, even the ten commandments; and he wrote them on two tablets of stone. 14 The LORD commanded me at that time to teach you statutes and ordinances, that you might do them in the land where you go over to possess it. 15 Therefore watch yourselves carefully.

There is a big quote box, and ones in side that are your quotes. I keep forgetting to delete that last "quote" at the end of the page. The message is still there for anyone who is interested in reading it. I will try to not forget it next time.
If you value your post, you can fix it. Then it would make sense for me to respond at that point.

Here is the law spoken of. There are 613 laws scattered through the Torah.

The 613 laws of God.

Discussion of the 613 laws of God
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/613_commandments
How many were for only the Levites? How many of them are repeated. Thou shall not look on the nakedness of your father, your mother, your sister, your brothers wife, your fathers wife, your sisters husband. Thou shall not commit incest. with your sister, your brothers daughter, your fathers wife, your cousin.

Are these all just one Law? Thou shall not commit Adultery. And isn't this all part of the 2nd greatest Commandment. "thou shall love your neighbor as yourself?

So the man made statement that there are 613 Commandments of God for people to follow in the Old Testament is a deception, an untruth designed to convince us that God's Laws are so Grievous, so burdensome, so many in number, that it is impossible to keep them.

Wikipedia didn't allow Himself to be killed on my behalf, so I won't be building doctrine from their Word's.
