Why does it matter what gods it celebrates? My point is... it's not celebrating the only living God.
Because the point is halloween isn't celebrating a god. It is celebrating the end of summer.

It matters because for some reason this festival is 'evil' but no-one seems to complain about Ramadan, Passover, Eid etc. It's just another religion! Wish people could actually learn their facts before making ignorant gross generalisations about other religions.

If I was expected to observe Ramadan i'd totally complain. I love food.

Going back to where this whole thread started (cuz I don't feel like starting a new one anyway ), can we get some opinions about Christians celebrating Halloween? Since there's not even a Christian basis for that one, should we go along with it and dress up and trick-or-treat?

I grew up doing that, and I think my mom tried to impress upon us that as Christians, we shouldn't dress up as anything dark or gruesome; that we were never to even pretend to be witches or whatever. Now as a mother myself, I don't know that I want to let my son be involved in it at all, despite feeling like it didn't do any damage to me as a child and I understood the difference between good and evil (therefore also God and Devil).

What do other people think about this?

I always liked it too I'm conflicted about it now though because my husband wasn't allowed to celebrate it growing up, and he's raised the question about letting our son dress up for it or not.

I find it interesting that one of the strongest objecters had a different opinion only 3 weeks ago.

I think people just take Harry Potter too seriously. It's fiction. It's meant to be read as fiction. Just like all fantasy novels. And no one is freaking out about Stephen King.
I don't think taking Harry Potter too seriously is the problem here. The problem is that people aren't taking God and his Word seriously enough.

Fiction or Non-Fiction, it is what it is....Sorcery, which is clearly spoken against in the Word.

leelee,

Where on any of the forums have I been 'one of the strongest objecters' about Halloween, other religions, or anything else that has ANYTHING to do with THIS thread?

3 weeks ago, I was unsure if I wanted my child celebrating Halloween, and 3 weeks later, I'm still unsure if I want my child celebrating Halloween. I don't see that my opinions have changed so much on the matter.

I honestly don't remember objecting to Harry Potter. When did I do this?

I believe that there are people who can read a fantasy/science fiction/fiction/horror novel, or watch a movie in those genres, and NOT be swayed by it.

I DON'T believe that said people are small children who:
1- have not yet learned the difference between real and make-believe
2- have not yet developed a relationship with God
3- do not know what the Bible says
4- have parents who don't take the trouble to teach them any of the above

We can't tell other adults or other people's kids what they should or shouldn't do. We can share God's Word with them, we can share our beliefs with them, we can pray for them. But telling them bluntly that they are wrong, that they are stupid, that they are 'sick'...that pushes people away and causes them to dig their heels in more firmly than before. When we 'attack' others with our strong beliefs and opinions, they become defensive and deaf to the actual message behind our overbearing behavior. Christians are supposed to 'woo' people to Jesus, not shove them.
there. it was about kids reading it that you objected.

Misscris,
It's hard not to celebrate Holloween when you have little ones you kind of feel pressured by other people. You think thet will be missing out. Truth is they don't care as long as they have fun doing other stuff. I take my daughter to church were they don't dress up they just play games and they get candy. You can also go out to the movies, out to eat, other fun stuff. Don't feel pressured if you don't really believe in something but do your homework.

We have a big Hallowe'en dressing up party at church. The kids love it and we put on games and cake decorating and prizes for the best costumes. It's so fun! :)

Well I tried looking it up, and I got this:

"Identifying Samhain as a Celtic Death God is one of the most tenacious errors associated with Halloween.

Almost all stories about the origin of Halloween correctly state that Halloween had its origins among the ancient Celts and is based on their "Feast of Samhain." However, a writer in the 18th century incorrectly stated that Samhain was named after the famous Celtic "God of the Dead." Many religious conservatives who are opposed to Halloween, Druidism, and/or Wicca picked up this belief without checking its accuracy, and accepted it as valid.

No such God ever existed. By the late 1990's many secular sources such as newspapers and television programs had picked up the error and propagated it widely. It is now a nearly universal belief, particularly among conservative Protestants.

Modern-day Samhain is the day when many Wiccans believe that their God dies, later to be reborn. [Wicca is a Neo-pagan, Earth-centered religion.] Thus, Samhain is not a God of death; it is actually began as a yearly observance of the death of a God."

God and death keeps showing up somehow..whihc is a complete oxymoron....Well like I say, you seem to like it; so enjoy....But I should warn you, changing the labels on the bottle is the devil's oldest trick in the book....all the best hon

I really didn't understand what you meant there. But I do enjoy Hallowe'en. I enjoyed it as a religious festival when I was pagan, and I enjoy it as a fun night with fancy dress now. My point made in the quoted text was not about how God and death are together, but that for pagans, it's a religious festival and does not celebrate the "god of death". I was encouraged to look up the info that Samhain is the god of death, and I replied with my search showing that it's a myth.

Cool, did you jump around on any home made brooms during the celebration as a 21st century pagan?

I still say Harry Potter and Halloween are to close to the real thing. Watch this (the full version is better):

leelee - doubt we're going to convince anyone of the fact that Samhain is just a religious holiday, same as Christmas, Ramadan, Eid, Passover etc. We know it is, and some people just won't educate themselves on other religions.
When I was in 1st year in Uni, my flatmate asked me to read a couple of his Christian books. I did, and they didn't particularly affect me. But he refused to read any of my pagan books because it was 'evil'. That' just one example of where people have made conclusions about religions without educating themselves on it. People don't educate themselves about Christianity, but no-one takes their objections seriously since they can't say they've actually understood any of it.

Christmas = Pagan. ( And also we ARE NOT TO KNOW JESUS AFTER THE FLESH ANYLONGER...do you just follow SOME of the bible and cut the rest out? SO if we no longer know JESUS after the flesh, then we sure should not celebrate a day of his birth. SInce BIRTH celebrations are not of GOD anyway...show me ONE time in the bible ANYONES birthday was celbrated as a good thing. )

Look, ANYTHING< or any ONE who is not IN CHRIST. does NOT have anything to do WITH CHRIST.

So if your of the WORLD then ok. Be of the world. But if you are of CHRIST. then BE OF CHRIST. 100%

Other wise it is WORSE for you. JEsus said he will NOT TOLLERATE, he will SPIT OUT The luke warm. ANYONE who thinks they can serve two masters, will have a MORE severe punsihment, here.

it would be BETTER for you if you were COLD(of the world) but you stratle the fence.

its either HOT, or COLD. be one. pick the world or pick JESUS. you can not have both. You are just deceiving yourself.

and for the record SUN brigns life, MOON/COLD/WINTER brings death. it was a celebration OF Death, revolvign around the sun. SUNWORSHIP....the LIFE aspect adn the DEATH aspect. its as ancient as SUMER which was wiped out in the FLOOD. its NOT complicated, just EVIL. Anything that is not JESUS is NOT GOOD. JEsus said COUNT THE COST before you follow me. Have you? do you know what COST you are counting? Do you KNOW the GOD you claim to follow? MAKE SURE that you do. Please, for your eternal sake, and for the peopel you may cause to STUMBLE because of your opinion. Realise that the thigns you do carry consiquences, personal, and for OTHERS.
