Back in the late 70s and early 80s, there was a fad where some rock musicians wore women's clothing in their performances. But, they weren't attempting to look like women.
I have repented my hostilities about gay looking men, but I was right about Elton John and wrong about Ringo so it proves I'm not to judge!

I'll give you one good reason as to why most Christian music doesn't resonate.

Lyrics are not based on the word of God.

It's not based on Christianity.

I could go for some Audio Adrenaline after watching a few of these videos. Though I do agree that a good portion of Christian music seems to be more focused on a very strange sort of love for God. Or Christian songs that seem to be more about their partner or one phrase, than Jesus.

CCM is nothing more than a form of pop intended to have a 'more spiritual' sound, by sounding 'less worldly'. It's designed to appeal to the broadest audience. Since even in mainstream pop when solid musicianship appears it's often buried under the avalanche of mass appeal.
Michael Jackson is a great example. Though not a fan myself, with the internet more people have a broader understanding of musical prowess. More people are better musicians. And as a result more people are aware that buried under all that pop dribble are some truly talented musicians. But, still, most people won't know that, or care.

Modern Christianity is actually well represented by CCM. Shallow, trite, bland, uninspired, tame, safe. Is it really any surprise the music is a reflection of the attitude most prevalent in churches? Branching into the underground or genres outside of CCM is the best place to find more sincere music.
This is good stuff. I have just tried to venture back out in into Christian music again and I am finding the same thing. A lot of it sounds the same, too. Manufactured. I can flip to one of the three or so Christian music stations in this area and it generally sounds like they are playing the same thing. Worship music is a whole other rant. :p

I'm curious to go back to check out some of the CCM from when I was trying to find stuff I liked before I sort of fell away in the early 2000s. I loved stuff like Starflyer 59, but there wasn't much of a Christian message there.

I would like to find more stuff like Keith Green. His stuff was always challenging and he was a great musician, too. Not everyone has to be, but it's always been a bit depressing that some of the best displays of musicianship came from secular music. Not that everyone has to be a virtuoso to make good music with meaning.

Why does most Christian music suck so bad? Why does it have to be over produced vapid lyrics simplistic rhyme scheme's and the same three chords over and over and then digital fill sounds? Why? Oh why oh why?
Christian music doesn't suck. Christian music is the hymns that the people of God could sing together in their corporal worship of God.

What sucks is the imitation Christian music presents itself as, as Christian, but is of the flesh. Christians want to play with the world, seen as accepted by the world. See, we are cool too. Nauseating.

What sucks is Christians playing to the world's approval.

I remember SF59 and was never a fan. But it's not surprise about their lyrics as T&N records title of "christian record label" was a bit tenuous back then.
Maybe check out The Glourious Unseen. They were basically a worship band but minus all the mainstream junk. It was really good. I thought the album Tinight the Stars Speak was their best.

is that some kind of litmus test for whether a song is spiritual?
No. I don't know why it is any less important for musicians to be paid for their services, and time than it is for anyone else. Pastors deserve pay, teachers deserve pay, maintenance personnel deserve pay, why not those who dedicate themselves to skill and craft of music and song that ushers the spirit into worship?

I forgot to reply the other day. I checked out a couple of songs by the Glourious Unseen the other day and likee what I heard. They did some different things that made their music interesting.

It might be time to dive in and try to find some Christian music I like again. Thankfully the internet makes options a lot more wide open than the local music stations.

which SF59 did you mean, btw? i forgot to reply too. starflyer went through a lot of changes over the years, and thinking about it, the thing that maybe really unifies all the albums is the tone of Martin's guitar, and the sense of melody in his playing. like some certain singer's voice, i recognize it right away and know it's him
