This just highlights the true problem. Here we have one brother, willing to share what God has been blessed him with for the greater good of his fellow man; and another brother concerned about only his own good and keeping his blessing for himself. You know, if we all pull together then we have everyone pulling for us. But when we pull for ourselves, we only have ourselves pulling for us.

What would Jesus do?
I'm not sure what Jesus would do in this case, but I know what he didn't do. He didn't go to the government of Rome and get His policies forced on the people like some kind of chump. Look - I don't have any discretionary money to give. Gov't takes so much of it and then is reckless with it. Why would I possibly trust them with more money? I get that you don't want to pay for your health care. You say you had medical issues and not working so I understand. You got other things you have to pay for. And if the govt came up with way to get everybody insured and it cost less than I'm spending now - I'd be great with that. But that's not the way it's going down. Or going to go down.

In about 3 months I'm going to be hit with property tax that I don't have the money for. Believe me, the only time government cares about me is when I'm late paying for it.

I pay for my healthcare, to the tune of almost $14k last year. My concern is for the people like you who cannot afford that kind of money. See, that too is the problem. Everyone is so obsessed with 'me me me' that they can't even conceive of anybody being concerned with 'you, you, and you'. But that is what this is all about. I am concerned that YOU cannot afford healthcare. And millions and millions and millions just like you.

You do have a point in can we trust government to handle this correctly. In a word, NO. Government has proven itself extremely ineffective at handling things like this. So has corporate America. That's why the true answer to this issue is to THROW BOTH REPUBLICANS AND DEMOCRATS OUT OF POWER and bring in someone who's capable of handling it properly. And no Trump is not that guy, not in the least.

You're right, unless you're a wall streeter or banker government couldn't care less about you and I. So why do we keep voting for more of the same?

Don't worry about my healthcare.

Another reason for universal healthcare. Read the article.

Four year old girl struck by houseboat
That is an incredibly sad, tragic story. I can't imagine losing my 5 yr old grand daughter like that....

While I agree that many people NEED inexpensive healthcare, and literally cannot afford it, we need to look at this family's situation.

If the father was "between jobs", do you think he would have signed up for Obamacare? Apparently he had not... it IS the law of the land, correct?

How long is the process to get signed up for Obamacare? What is the cost to the insured?

As tragic as this story is, I don't see any solution for people that are "between jobs", other than some type of short-term coverage (say, 1 year max for critical care) for people who get laid off from their job, that begins immediately upon termination.

"I have always felt that medical care should be available to those who otherwise cannot afford it"

Know who said that?

The republicans golden idol, Ronald Reagan

Absolutely. That's why we have to get smart and throw both parties out.

30 years used to be a career. What happened to that? Oh yeah, Reagan codifying greed, and Christians coveting mammon, that's what happened to that.

And actually they retired me because of medical reasons. Otherwise I'd probably still be working too.

They can reasonably work longer.

Social security wasn't meant to be a retirement fund...but that's how it's treated.

Christians coveting mammon I tend to think Christians are like anyone else...trying to raise their families without having to live in a cardboard box.

It's pretty sad that health is an opportunity for profits in America. As humans we look after each other, as government should look after people too, for free. I'm glad we have the NHS.

You're right, social security was never meant to be a retirement fund, it was only meant to supplement a person's fund and provide a safety net for the truly poor (as opposed to the self-imposed poverty the lazy create). This illustrates the narrow, limited view most people have now. The ability to see the 'big picture' has been lost amonmg us.

And there is a difference between providing for your family, and hording wealth. Remember the manna, where God gave them enough for the day every day? What happened to those who horded it for tomorrow? they found that tomorrow it was rotten. Just like God says will happen with horded riches.

we literally cannot sign up for 'Obamacare' because our state has refused to set up the marketplace and has refused to accept federal subsidies for it.

and they do this in order to point at all the people here who cannot get insured under the ACA and say "the ACA is a failure" -- without mentioning that it fails in this state precisely because the state's legislature has intentionally blocked anyone who lives here from accessing it.

many red states did this, and Obama put a waiver in place for the tax penalty for those who live in such states, so we aren't penalized further by the purely politically motivated non-action of the state government.

The manna was during the journey through the desert. It didn't continue after the 40 years and the concurring sifting out of rebellious people. After the 40 years, they had jobs/occupations/professions. They then paid multiple types of tithes to support the community and Judaism. The tithing system was eliminated with the coming of Jesus Christ and the destruction of the temple.

The "manna" provided to us today is our jobs. When we retire, whatever leftover "manna" we have left from our workdays becomes is supposed to be our retirement fund.

I don't know who the hoarders are that you're referring to, but I'm certainly not financially ready to retire. I haven't even gotten to the family part just yet.

Trump promised health care for all during the campaign. As he is said to be a man of his word, let's see it get done, now.

That's what he promised, but not even close to what he's offering. Imagine. A politician selling us a lie. Who'da thunk it?
