A new “missile gap” is emerging, one that is based in fact. This is the disparity between the United States and its main competitors, Russia and China, in the field of hypersonic weapons systems. A hypersonic vehicle is one that moves through the atmosphere at a minimum speed of five times that of sound, or Mach 5. A hypersonic cruise missile travels continuously through the air employing a special high-powered engine. A hypersonic glide vehicle is launched into space atop a ballistic missile, after which it maneuvers through the upper reaches of the atmosphere until it dives towards its target. Both vehicle types can carry either conventional or nuclear weapons.

Hypersonic weapons systems could dramatically alter the existing balance of conventional military power forces between the United States and its major competitors. They could strike key military targets such as airfields, command and control centers, depots and force concentrations almost without warning. Hypersonic delivery systems are viewed as particularly useful against aircraft carriers, large surface combatants, amphibious warfare ships and even transports carrying critical military supplies.

This new gap could be far more consequential than that which concerned Senator Kennedy some sixty years ago. Hypersonic weapons are extremely difficult to track with existing air and missile defense sensors and virtually impossible to intercept. According to General John Hyten, Commander of U.S. Strategic Command: “We don’t have any defense that could deny the employment of such a weapon against us, so our response would be our deterrent force, which would be the triad and the nuclear capabilities that we have to respond to such a threat.”

China has installed antiship cruise missiles and surface-to-air missile systems on three
of its artificial islands in the South China Sea, cnbc reported on May 2, citing “sources

He added that such deployments were expected as China built missile shelters on the reefs
last year and already deployed such missile systems on Woody Island further to the north.

The YJ-12B antiship cruise missiles allow China to strike ships within 295 nautical miles
of the bases. The HQ-9B long-range surface-to-air missiles can hit aircraft and incoming
missiles up to a range of about 160 nautical miles.

“Before this, if you were one of the other claimants … you knew that China was monitoring
your every move,” he said. “Now you will know that you’re operating inside Chinese missile
range. That’s a pretty strong, if implicit, threat.”

in the South China Sea, describing the move as a “provocation” and accusing America

A statement issued by the defence ministry said Chinese vessels and aircraft warned
American ships to leave because they had entered its territorial waters in the South
China Sea, through which nearly $5 trillion in ship-borne trade flows, without permission.

The move “contravened Chinese and relevant international law, seriously infringed upon
Chinese sovereignty and harmed strategic mutual trust between the two militaries”, it said.

“Once occupied, China will be able to extend its influence thousands of miles

The Importance of the South China Sea

The South China Sea is among the most valuable and important ocean regions on

11 billion barrels of oil, 190 trillion cubic feet of natural gas, and some 10 percent

A Breakthrough in China-Japan Relations

Japan is another traditional adversary of China that is reconsidering its position. China and
Japan have been on tense terms for several years because of a series of territorial disputes.

China has been aggressively taking control of waters and islands in the South China Sea that
are not its own. As an island nation, Japan eyes China’s territorial grabs uneasily, but it doesn’t
want to fight back.

There is a lot of bad blood between the two nations. However, it may be in Japan’s best interest
to build warmer relations with China, since its American ally is becoming more isolationist.

On May 9, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe met with Chinese Premier Li Keqiang and South
Korean President Moon Jae-in. The main topic on the agenda was North Korea, but Abe also had
a one-on-one summit with the Chinese leader. As one source told Bloomberg, “The summit’s main

According to the Japan Times, Japan and China are working toward establishing free trade
through the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership. They have also agreed on a
“Maritime and Aerial Communication Mechanism” to prevent unnecessary conflicts between
their forces in contested waters.

Both Japan and India have traditionally had close ties with the United States. However, U.S.
President Donald Trump’s “America First” policy is causing them to rethink their alliances.

China is rapidly gaining power and influence in Asia. Trade war between the U.S. and China
has become a reality. As the U.S. isolates itself, it makes the rest of the world more likely
to unite against it.

It may seem far-fetched to say that India, China and Japan will end up as allies.
But that is what the Bible indicates will happen! Revelation 16:12 refers to the “kings of east.”

Other prophecies show that this alliance will include Russia, China and Japan, and probably India,
the Koreas and smaller southeast Asian nations. These Asian nations will ally together into a strong
power that will “trouble” the king of the north (Daniel 11:44). China and Japan will eventually
combine their power with the ultimate intention of forcing the U.S. out of the western Pacific.

Despite its many national, religious and political differences, Asia will ultimately be welded together
into a common power bloc.” Japan and India’s rapprochement with China show the growing reality
of that “kings of the east” alliance.

hegemon projecting power around the world into a normal nation just defending its borders.

Many people on both sides of the political spectrum would love to see this happen. Many on
the left view America’s overseas military bases as oppressive colonial outposts, while many
on the right view them as a needless burden on taxpayers.
