The U.S. is struggling to pay for its foreign military bases.

The U.S. maintains 800 foreign military bases spread across 80 countries, according to
David Vine, an associate professor of Anthropology from American University. These bases
cost U.S. taxpayers over $156 billion per year—almost one fifth of all U.S. military spending.
https://www.mintpressnews.com/214492-2/214492/
-

With the federal budget deficit projected to soar to $1 trillion by 2020, interest
payments are consuming an increasing share of U.S. tax revenues.
https://www.nytimes.com/2018/04/09/...&gwh=DDCF01EF3D40F5A5622747DC67D26479&gwt=pay
-

Within the next few years, the federal government is projected to spend
more on interest than on defense.
https://blogs.wsj.com/economics/201...efense-and-nondefense-discretionary-spending/

This means that America will be forced into making budget cuts or printing massive amounts
of money. Since 62 percent of the $4.407 trillion slated to be spent in fiscal year 2019 is ear-
marked for mandatory spending programs like Medicare and Social Security, all budget cuts
must come from the discretionary budget (unless Congress reforms mandatory spending).

This likely means defense budget cuts in the near future.
https://www.thebalance.com/u-s-federal-budget-breakdown-3305789
-

Congress acknowledges this reality and projects that defense spending will fall from
4.7 percent to 2.7 percent of the nation’s gross domestic product within a decade.
https://www.usnews.com/opinion/arti...e-will-bankrupt-the-nation-we-need-reform-now

If the nation is forced to cut defense spending, its overseas military bases will likely be one
of the first expenses to go. The loss of these bases would transform America from a global
hegemon projecting power around the world into a normal nation just defending its borders.

Many people on both sides of the political spectrum would love to see this happen. Many on
the left view America’s overseas military bases as oppressive colonial outposts, while many
on the right view them as a needless burden on taxpayers.
By doing so, there will be a military and political vacuum. This will be filled by our adversaries and they will inevitably gain momentum from this.

Defending our borders will be far more of a literal scenario than we can imagine today.

I hope the military and political authorities won’t take into consideration what the lefties and the right wingers are advocating.

CHINA Warns RUSSIA That “State Of War” Now Exists With UNITED STATES
That state of war has been in existence ever since Mao came on the scene and took power (1949). China is a bigger threat to the USA than Russia ever was.

What America (and most Americans) failed to understand is that this was a serious conflict to gain control of the world (in many different ways), and become the major super power.

China should always have been regarded as an enemy. Instead the Western world shipped its jobs to China, and the USA became seriously indebted to China. In the meantime the doors were opened to Chinese immigrants and students so that Western technology could be blatantly stolen from under the noses of the naive Western people, and large chunks of real estate in North America went into Chinese hands. We know very little about the cyber warfare that China has been waging, but it could easily shut down American (electrical) power grids.

Any wonder that the Chinese have only contempt for the West? They always regarded Westerners as barbarians, but now they see them as stupid barbarians.

The U.S. Airlines Bow to China on Taiwan

The Civil Aviation Administration of China instructed dozens of international
airlines to amend their websites back in late April, to no longer state or imply
that Taiwan is an independent country. The instruction said they should
instead refer to it as “Taiwan, China.”

The airlines were allotted 30 days to make the changes or suffer disruption of
their operations throughout China, the world’s second-largest aviation market.

Numerous airlines, including British Airways, Air Canada, Deutsche Lufthansa
AG and Philippine Airlines wholly and swiftly obeyed China. Japanese and South
Korean carriers slowly and begrudgingly followed suit.

The White House denounced the demand as “Orwellian nonsense” and urged
U.S. airlines to ignore it. Press Secretary Sarah Sanders said the demand was
“part of a growing trend by the Chinese Communist Party to impose its political
views on American citizens and private companies.”
https://www.smh.com.au/world/asia/o...r-bid-to-police-websites-20180506-p4zdmt.html

"The United States strongly objects to China's attempts to compel private firms
to use specific language of a political nature in their publicly available content,"
the White House said in its statement. "We call on China to stop threatening
and coercing American carriers and citizens."

In the end American, Delta and United also amended their websites to obey China’s
demands about how they should refer to Taiwan. All three removed references to
Taiwan, yet they stopped short of specifically labeling Taiwan as part of China.

American Airlines, which previously called Taiwan’s capital “tpe, Taiwan,” now labels
it “tpe - Taoyuan International,” a reference to the city’s primary airport. Delta now
lists it as “tpe Taipei,”—with no word following the dangling comma. And United Air-
lines—the last to cave in to China—now lists the destination as “Taipei (tpe – Taoyuan).”
-

July 25, 2018 The Wall Street Journal called these measures “meeting Beijing
halfway” and said it is unclear whether the “minimal compliance” of the U.S.
airlines will be “sufficient to avert China’s promised reprisals.”
https://www.wsj.com/articles/american-airlines-bows-to-beijing-on-taiwan-issue-1532490608
-

Since the airlines have shown that they are willing to capitulate to China, it is likely
that the Chinese government will feel emboldened and soon push for full compliance.

For decades, the people of Taiwan have lived in fear of military invasion from Chinese
forces. But the island has managed to remain independent thanks to military equipment,
political support and security assurances from its primary ally, the United States.

May 12 China’s Advanced Weapons Systems
https://www.uscc.gov/sites/default/...S Markit_China's Advanced Weapons Systems.pdf

The People’s Liberation Army of China is developing high-tech weapons designed to
defeat the United States in a future conflict, according to a congressional commission
report released on May 12.

Antisatellite missiles, attack drones, high-speed rail guns, hypersonic missiles, killer
satellites, lasers and other advanced arms are being developed in this bid for military
dominance. While space warfare is currently China’s highest priority, many weapons
are also being designed to give it military control over the world’s oceans.

As recently as 1990, China’s navy was effectively a coastal defense force. But China
has grown into a major naval power in the Indian and Pacific oceans. New high-tech
weapons have now pushed China to the verge of becoming the premier naval power
in the South China Sea.
https://worldview.stratfor.com/article/chinas-navy-prepares-close-gap-us

As the report notes, China leads the world in ballistic missile development and is
making rapid progress in launching its antiship ballistic missiles further and faster.

While it may not seem like these weapons pose much of a threat to the U.S. homeland,
they do give the Chinese Navy tremendous power over shipping lanes and maritime
choke points in the Indo-Pacific Region.

The world’s most important trade routes pass through the Strait of Malacca, the Strait
of Hormuz, the Bab el-Mandeb, the Turkish Straits, the Suez Canal and the Panama
Canal. China is already challenging America for control of many of these choke points.

If new high-tech weapons give China a competitive edge over America in the Indian and
Pacific oceans, the United States may soon find that it is no longer a global superpower.
-

Laser Warfare

The Bab el-Mandeb is the strait at the southern end of the Red Sea. Roughly 4 percent
of the world’s oil supply passes through this strategic waterway. Two major military bases
located in the African nation of Djibouti guard the Bab el-Mandeb: a Chinese support base
and Camp Lemonnier, the only permanent U.S. military base in Africa.

According to Pentagon officials, the Chinese military has begun testing new laser weapons
in Djibouti. Two U.S. pilots on a cargo plane suffered eye injuries after being exposed to
a laser beam. The Pentagon reports that there have been 10 similar laser attacks on U.S.
personnel working at Camp Lemonnier. American military officials have accused China of
deliberately pointing lasers at U.S. planes. China denies the accusations.
https://qz.com/africa/1271069/us-says-china-pointed-laser-at-pilots-over-djibouti-base/
https://www.reuters.com/article/us-...s-pointed-at-planes-in-djibouti-idUSKBN1I429M

These attacks undermine the morale of U.S. troops as
the threat of trade war looms between the U.S. and China.

“These incidents are not surprising as they represent an act just short of war, but indicate gross,
intentional negligence, as well as complete disregard for aviation safety and international norms,”
Trey Meeks, a principal at the Asia Group research firm, told the Wall Street Journal.
“I would certainly view it as harassment.”
https://www.wsj.com/articles/laser-...-in-africas-skies-pentagon-charges-1525351775
-

Whether or not China was behind these laser attacks, the incidents at least illustrate
how such a high-tech weapon can be used to distract and injure U.S. personnel in ways
that do not elicit retaliation.

Some analysts worry that China may leverage Djibouti’s monetary
debt to get the U.S. military kicked out of Camp Lemonnier.

July 10 President Xi promoting ties with Arab Nations
http://www.xinhuanet.com/english/2018-07/10/c_137310433.htm

Chinese President Xi Jinping delivered remarks in Beijing on July 10 at the eighth
ministerial meeting of the China-Arab States Cooperation Forum. Xi’s basic message
to the representatives from 21 Arab nations and to the secretary general of the Arab
League was that China seeks to become more involved in the Middle East.

He stressed the importance of Sino-Arab relations, saying,
“Arab states and China are natural partners.”

Xi also emphasized to the Arab representatives the importance of the Belt and Road
Initiative, a Chinese project aiming to rebuild the ancient Silk Road trade route by
enhancing connectivity and transport infrastructure along the thousands of miles be-
tween China and Europe, including a route through the Middle East.

“Belt and Road cooperation has energized every dimension of Sino-Arab relations
and propelled Sino-Arab all-around cooperation into a new phase,” Xi said.

He announced that a China-Arab cooperation statement would be signed to accelerate
progress on the Belt and Road Initiative. “This marks a new historical starting point
of Sino-Arab friendship and cooperation,” he said.

Xi said China and the Arab world should strengthen their strategic trust and said he would
invite hundreds of scientists and political and religious figures from these Arab countries
to visit China over the next three years. He promised to give $15 million in direct aid to
the Palestinian people and said China will give $20 billion in loans to help Arab states in
economic reconstruction, adding, “China is determined to become the keeper of peace
and stability in the Middle East.”

As Xi said at a speech to the Arab League in January 2017, “Instead of looking for a proxy
in the Middle East, we promote peace talks. … nstead of seeking any sphere of influence,
we call on all parties to join the circle of friends for the Belt and Road Initiative; instead of
attempting to fill the ‘vacuum,’ we build a coop. partnership network for win-win outcomes.”
-

The Belt and Road Initiative is bringing improved connectivity in the Middle East and
beyond—and is setting the stage for increased China-Europe cooperation. It is also
setting the stage for the rapid fulfillment of specific Bible prophecies. a “mart of nations”

The Shanghai Cooperation Organization
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shanghai_Cooperation_Organisation

The Shanghai Cooperation Organization (sco), a China-dominated security alliance,
formally accepted India and Pakistan into its ranks during its summit on June 2017.
With the additional nations, its members and affiliates now include nearly half of
humanity’s total population.
-

The nations join China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, and
the bloc now contains 43 percent of the world’s population. nato contains only around 12
percent. The nations in the sco now account for 24 percent of the world’s economy.
The organization’s potential influence is staggering.

Although the sco is a security alliance and nato is a military alliance, war simulator
enthusiasts sometimes pit one against the other. With the official addition of India
and Pakistan, such war game simulations will become a more evenly matched affair.

The fundamental difference between nato and the sco is a mutual defense clause.
Article 5 of nato’s treaty (recently made famous by United States President Donald
Trump’s refusal to affirm it) says “an armed attack against one or more of them in
Europe or North America shall be considered an attack against them all.”

The sco has no equivalent article. Its purposes are to increase regional cooperation
against terrorism, separatism and extremism.
-

Despite this, the sco has coordinated a number of joint military exercises and war games.
The importance, though, is not that the sco be some direct counter to the West’s nato.
Bringing India and Pakistan into the sco would be a great boon to Moscow and Beijing,
but it would be detrimental to Washington.

The sco is part of the many blocs positioned as alternatives to America’s dominance.
There is the general Russia-China alliance, the China-headed Asian Infrastructure
Investment Bank (which excludes the U.S.), the Russia-led Collective Security Treaty
Organization and much more.
-

India and Pakistan took part in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization’s biannual
anti-terrorism military drill from August 22 to 29 in Chebarkul, Russia, marking
the two countries’ first participation in an sco military drill since they became full
members of the organization last year.
https://economictimes.indiatimes.co...n-sco-military-drill/articleshow/65514176.cms
-

India’s entrance into the group last year was notable in part because of its previously
strained relationship with China. A war broke out in 1962 after China attacked India
to secure its Tibetan borders.

The relationship has remained tense ever since, with India hindering China’s Belt and
Road Initiative, China increasing its military presence in the Indian Ocean, and frequent
border skirmishes between the two most-populous nations on Earth.

A major factor enabling India’s entrance into the sco was its intimate relationship with Russia.
Russia is India’s largest weapons exporter and its most reliable military partner. In July, India
purchased Russia’s newest missile system in response to China acquiring the same missile
system. India and Russia have agreed to boost bilateral trade to $30 billion by 2025.
http://tass.com/defense/1014857

Now that India has joined the sco, relations are expected to improve further.

America’s Defense Spending: Is it as Great as It Looks?

The United States is by far the No. 1 defense spender in the world.
The conclusion: America is super-dominant and safe from any competitor.
But measuring what is spent, doesn’t always measure how well it is spent.

May 22 US Defense Budget Not That Much Bigger Than China, Russia
https://breakingdefense.com/2018/05...294.746269865.1526982541-799951594.1526890807

"I've seen comparative numbers of US defense budget versus China, US defense budget
versus Russia," Gen. Milley said. "What is not often commented on is the cost of labor.
We’re the best paid military in the world by a long shot. The cost of Russian soldiers
or Chinese soldiers is a tiny fraction."

“I think you’ll find that Chinese and Russian investments, modernization, new weapons
systems, etc, their [research and development]—which is all government-owned and also
is much cheaper—I think you’d find a much closer comparison,” concluded Milley.

'
WASHINGTON: It’s become a commonplace to say the US spends much more on defense
than any other country — but what if that’s not exactly true? Inspired by something Army
Chief of Staff Mark Milley said to the Senate, I pulled together some numbers that suggest
America’s superior spending power erodes dramatically when you compare actual purchasing
power. Once you factor in how much the US military spends on pay and benefits for uniformed
and civilian personnel — almost half the budget by some measures — as opposed to weapons,
operations, and training, then China’s defense budget may actually be bigger.
'
-
Add in the massive waste in America’s military spending.

Take a look beyond the surface figures of U.S. military spending and America’s power
looks less super-dominant. Billions, if not trillions, are lost through waste, corruption
and purchases designed to favor congressional districts.

Today: America’s Merchant Marine Fleet Is Almost Gone

May 14 Dwindling Merchant Marine fleet crimps U.S. ability to wage war
https://www.mcclatchydc.com/news/nation-world/national/national-security/article210623279.html

'
WA. - The once-mighty U.S. Merchant Marine fleet has nearly collapsed under
the weight of high labor costs, zigzagging federal policies and intense competition
from abroad, damaging America's position as the only country in the world able
to supply and sustain a long-distance war.

The U.S. Merchant Marine has declined from 1,288 international trading vessels in
1951 to 81 today. “It’s a matter of national security,” said Maritime Administration
chief Mark H. Buzby, a retired Navy rear admiral.

The Merchant Marine is a a fleet of U.S. ships that carries cargo during peacetime
and becomes an auxiliary of the Defense Department during wartime to deliver troops
and supplies to conflict zones. The Navy itself does not have enough ships to handle a
large-scale supply mission on its own and has relied in almost every conflict on the
Merchant Marine.

“I tell people we’re kind of on the ragged edge here of our ability to conduct a large-
scale sea-lift operation to move our combat forces overseas. Even in an uncontested
environment, we would be challenged,” Buzby told McClatchy.

An Air Force general warned Congress last month that the Pentagon might have to turn
to foreign vessels to mobilize equipment, just as it did in the 1991 Gulf War mobilization.

But in that war, the crews of 13 of the 192 foreign-flagged vessels carrying cargo
rebelled and forced their ships away from the war zone.

“If the fleet continues to lose ships, a lengthy, mass deployment on the scale of Desert
Shield/Desert Storm could eventually require U.S. forces to rely on foreign-flagged ships
for sustainment,” Air Force Gen. Darren W. McDew, head of the U.S. Transportation
Command, told a Senate panel April 10.

McDew said the dwindling Merchant Marine fleet, along with an aging Navy transport
fleet, "threatens our ability to meet national security requirements."

U.S. troops stationed in the Middle East and Afghanistan still receive much of their
supplies via U.S. flag vessels. Despite the usage of heavy lift aircraft, large oceangoing
vessels remain crucial to military mobility in the 21st century.

If a foreign naval power creates a naval blockade at sea, any vessel flying a foreign flag
may choose to remain neutral and not carry American cargo through disputed territory.

China understands the strategic implications of America’s dwindling merchant fleet.
That is why 4,973 Chinese deep-water vessels fly the Chinese flag. China’s merchant
vessels stand ready to support the People’s Liberation Army at a moment’s notice.

While almost 17 percent of merchant vessels worldwide flew under an American flag 50
years ago, less than half a percent of merchant ships fly the Stars and Stripes today.

Americans take for granted the U.S. Navy’s ability to handle any conflict that may arise.
But navy ships need supply lines. Capt. Carl Schuster and Dr. Patrick Bratton authored
a 2015 report on maritime security claiming that America’s weakness in commercial
shipping is the nation’s Achilles’ heel.

Russia Shows Off Military Might Near Alaska -US intercepts

US intercepts Russian jets near Alaska
http://thehill.com/policy/defense/387395-us-intercepts-russian-jets-near-alaska

According to the Associated Press, Russian supersonic Tu-160 bombers flew
thousands of miles from Saratov, Russia, to the Bering Strait along with Tu-95
strategic bombers and tanker planes for in-flight refueling. The Moscow Times
reported that a total of around 10 aircraft were involved.

United States Navy Capt. Scott Miller said in a statement, “At approximately
10 a.m. Eastern time, two Alaskan-based norad F-22 fighters intercepted and
visually identified two Russian TU-95 ‘Bear’ long-range bomber aircraft flying
in the Air Defense Identification Zone off the western coast of Alaska, north
of the Aleutian Islands.”

The Russian military exercise, although it did not violate any laws, was a
deliberate clear demonstration that Russia can deploy bombers from great
distances and launch devastating nuclear attacks at American targets.

The Tu-160 can carry 44 tons of ordnance, including six cruise missiles or 12
shorter-range missiles, all carrying nuclear warheads. The Tu-95, another
Soviet-era model, can hold up to 20 tons of nuclear-capable missiles.

During the Cold War, the Soviet Air Force flew such missions regularly.
President Vladimir Putin is showing the world that he is now restoring
Russia’s power to Soviet levels. In 2007, Putin said, “Russia has a very
important goal which is to retain leadership in the production of military
equipment,” referring to resumed production of Tu-160 and Tu-95 bombers.
-

A large part of Russia’s strategy to become a world superpower again is strength-
ening its military, and that is exactly what it has done. Under Vladimir Putin, Russia
has improved and enlarged its military and shown its political will to invade Georgia
and Ukraine and to threaten the U.S.

Vladimir Putin warns that a third world war would lead to the "end of civilization.”

After being asked if a third global war will break out, Putin quoted Albert
Einstein, saying: “I know not with what weapons World War iii will be fought,
but World War iv will be fought with sticks and stones.”

Putin added: “The realization that a third world war could bring the end
of civilization should deter us from taking dangerous steps globally.”

He continued: “We’ve been living in a period of relative peace following the
Second World War. We know that there are regional conflicts out there. …
But we’ve never had any global conflicts since then. Why?

Because global military power has established a strategic parity. And you
might find my words inappropriate, but it’s true: The fear that each country
has instills respect in their opponents.”

But Putin then said current trends are threatening to bring an end
to the relative peace the world has experienced since World War ii.

Is This the ‘Peace in Our Time’ ? , but distruction will come suddenaly
-

Many analysts agree with the view that nuclear arsenals have, ironically enough,
brought mankind into an era of relative peace. As American astronomer Carl
Sagan described it: “The nuclear arms race is like two sworn enemies standing
waist-deep in gasoline, one with three matches, the other with five.”

In a major nuclear war, no one wins. The idea of being the first country to
“drop a match in the gasoline” is irrational. As Putin said, fear has restrained
the nuclear powers from confronting each other.
-

Now we’re simply depending on the idea, and the hope, and we’re trusting in men,
that no man will be foolish enough to start a nuclear war. Do you have that much
faith in man? I don’t, there has never been a weapon invented yet of mass des-
truction that has not been used

But the problem is that human beings are not always rational, particularly in wartime.
There is no guarantee that an instance of wartime desperation would not compel a man
commanding a nuclear arsenal to press the button. Mankind’s war-torn history shows
that when war breaks out, men ultimately do not sit on their most potent weapons.
They use them.
-

The end of the age, Nuclear Armageddon Is ‘At the Door.’

The disciples of Jesus Christ asked Him: “Tell us, when shall these things be? and
what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world “age.” ?” (Matt 24:3).

The disciples wanted to know when man’s civilization would end and when the age of
Christ ruling over humanity would begin. They asked Him what events would lead up
to that momentous transition. Jesus gave them a detailed answer.

He explained that prior to His return, religious deception would victimize many (v. 4-5).
He also said people would learn of “wars and rumors of wars,” fierce international tensions,
and “famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes” (verses 6-7). These are all early-warning
indicators, but they do not mean the end of the age of man is imminent. Christ said,

“[A]ll these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet.”

In verses 21-22, Christ speaks of an event to occur which does mean the end of the age
of man is imminent—and that His return is at the door: “For there will be greater anguish
than at any time since the world began. And it will never be so great again. In fact, unless
that time of calamity is shortened, not a single person will survive …” (New Living Trans.).

At the time that Christ spoke those words upon the Mount of Olives, a global war that
could threaten to kill every “single person” was not yet technologically possible.

But today—during this age of proliferation of nuclear weaponry—a war capable of ex-
tinguishing all human life from the planet is not only possible but dangerously probable.
Only in the modern era has mankind had the ability to exterminate himself.

“But it will be shortened”. World War iii will be interrupted! Before mankind detonates
enough weapons to entirely annihilate itself, Jesus Christ will interrupt the war.

After that time of unprecedented destruction, He will usher in unprecedented peace.

Putin says modern weapons rate close to 60% in Russian Army
http://tass.com/defense/1011306

Vladimir Putin said on June 28 that the share of modern weapons in the Russian
Armed Forces has grown in the last six years from 16 percent to nearly 60 percent.

“Today, it is close to 60 percent, and the current pace will allow us to reach the
planned figure of 70 percent by 2021,” Putin said at a reception in the Kremlin
honoring graduates of Russia’s military universities.
-

When Putin became president in 2000, the military was so weak and its equipment
so outdated, it was barely operational. From the earliest years of his rule, one of
Putin’s highest priorities has been the transformation of the Russian military into
a modern and more lethal force.

Initially, the modernization efforts were slow and challenging. As recently as 2009,
a nato dispatch said the Russian Armed Forces rely on “aging and obsolete equip-
ment.”But in more recent years, Putin’s efforts have begun to pay major dividends.

Putin said Russia’s cutting-edge Kinzhal air-launched hypersonic missile system is
already on trial combat duty in the country’s southern military district. This system
alongside the Avangard intercontinental missile complexes and numerous other so-
phisticated new armaments “will make it possible to increase the Russian Army’s
potential by many times,” he said.

Putin also said Russian military technology is now outperforming that of Western
powers in some key areas, saying, “A number of Russian-made armaments are years,
maybe even decades, ahead of their foreign analogs.”

Since the beginning of his rule, Putin’s goal has been to make the world fear and
respect Russia once again. Many Europeans—especially in the eastern regions
of the Continent—are also alarmed by Russia’s increasing military power.

Russian President Vladimir Putin Creates Political Wing for Russian Army

JULY 31, 2018 In Soviet echo, Putin gives Russian army a political wing
https://www.reuters.com/article/us-...s-russian-army-a-political-wing-idUSKBN1KL1VA

Russian President Vladimir Putin established a new political wing within the Army,
designed to instill patriotism in soldiers during a time of rising tensions with the West.

The move is a chilling echo of a Soviet policy that once saw troops indoctrinated
in the principles of communism to ensure loyalty to the party.

“The role of the moral and political unity of the Army and society is increasing immensely
at the time of global informational and psychological confrontation (with the West),” said
Alexander Kanshin, deputy chairman of the Public Council at the Russian Ministry of
Defense, earlier this year.

t is necessary,” Kanshin continued, “to fundamentally reform and significantly strengthen
the armed forces’ entire [political] structure, which will organize, conduct and be responsible
for the moral and ideological aspect of the Russian Army.”

Vladimir Scherbakov, a military specialist at the Nezavisimaya Gazeta daily, said Putin’s
decision to resurrect a version of the Soviet-era directorate raised questions.

“The main question is this. In the Soviet era, the directorate in practice worked in the
interests of the Communist Party’s central committee. It’s not completely clear what
military-political work the resurrected directorate will do and more importantly in the
interests of which political party.”

Others wondered whether the creation of the new directorate was the start of a wider
renaissance in ideological education that would draw in schools and colleges, and whether
the new instrument would be used to root out young soldiers deemed as too pro-Western.

“All of this is reminiscent of a gradual return to the USSR,” wrote Dmitry Drize,
Kommersant’s deputy editor.
-

Drize’s fear of a return to Soviet practices is well founded. Putin famously said,
“The demise of the Soviet Union was the greatest geopolitical catastrophe of the century.”
And he has been working ever since to restore Russian power to its Soviet levels.

Putin’s restoration project has included resurrecting relics from the Soviet “glory days,”
such as the Hero of Socialist Labor award, a Stalin-era public physical fitness program,
the Soviet anthem and a Soviet-style law against dissent.

Putin revived a Soviet-era public fitness program, “Ready for Labor and Defense,”
https://www.reuters.com/article/us-...t-style-fitness-program-idUSBREA2N1N820140324

Putin said the program will “pay homage to our national historical traditions” and will teach
Russians “to stand up for themselves, their family and, in the final run, the Fatherland.”

China has had a national fitness program of its own in place since 1995.

Russian analyst Lev Navrozov said this program and other aspects of Chinese society mean
that China “is a military camp, in which everyone is a soldier” (World Tribune, Aug. 11, 2011).

AUGUST 16, 2018 Russia accused of testing a ‘killer satellite’ in orbit
https://www.news.com.au/technology/...t/news-story/618fa3f5cf0bf28f83e0bf370f7cdd0c

"IT’S small. It's nimble. It’s doing strange things over our heads. And Russia's new
Kosmos 2521 satellite has the potential to bring the world’s economy to its knees.

“We don’t know for certain what it is and there is no way to verify it,” State Department
assistant secretary Yleem Poblete told a conference this week. “But Russian intentions
with respect to this satellite are unclear and are obviously a very troubling development
— particularly, when considered in concert with statements by Russia’s Space Force
Commander.” She said its manoeuvres indicated it could be an anti-satellite weapon.

And this has dire implications: Vital services such as the internet, television, telephone
and GPS all rely on satellites. As does a swath of other services — such as weather
forecasting and firefighting......"
-

“In October of last year the Russian Ministry of Defense deployed a space object they
claimed was a ‘space apparatus inspector.’ But its behaviour on-orbit was inconsistent
with anything seen before from on-orbit inspection or space situational awareness cap-
abilities, including other Russian inspection satellite activities,” Ms Poblete told a con-
ference on disarmament in Switzerland.

Moscow immediately dismissed her comments. But Russia’s Space Force Commander
has already stated publicly it is developing “new prototypes” of space weapons.

Is this one of them?

“The Russian Ministry of Defense recently announced that its Space Troops have re-
ceived a mobile laser system which Vladimir Putin announced to the world on March 1
of this year. Russia’s leader himself alluded to space weapons being ‘more acceptable
in the political and military respect’,” Ms Poblete said.

"This refers to the Peresvet system Pre. Vladimir Putin referred to when he announced
six new ‘super weapons’ to the world earlier this year. The laser is mobile, networking
generators, sensors and command-and-control systems packed on the back of trucks.

The laser is claimed to have the ability to shoot-down ballistic missiles
in their orbital phase, as well as satellites."
https://www.news.com.au/technology/...l/news-story/b97a0720bac92428941da476e898fd3b
-

America’s “Achilles’ heel” of technology dependence means it will be vulnerable

Poblete’s concern about Russia’s anti-satellite technologies is well founded, considering
that the U.S. has hundreds of satellites in orbit that it depends on for a wide-range of act-
ivities, such as weather monitoring, cable and network television broadcasting, and many
telephone and Internet technologies.

Satellites also enable businesses to perform such tasks as real-time international inventory
management, instant credit card authorization, banking services and communication between
locations across the globe. Perhaps most importantly, the U.S. military relies on satellites
for reconnaissance, communication, navigation and targeting systems. “U.S. space systems
are among the most fragile and vulnerable assets operated by the U.S. military."

AUGUST 28 Russia to hold its biggest war games since fall of Soviet Union
https://uk.reuters.com/article/uk-r...ames-since-fall-of-soviet-union-idUKKCN1LD0ON

“Russia will next month hold its biggest war games since the fall of the Soviet Union,
Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu said on Tuesday, a massive military exercise that
will also involve the Chinese and Mongolian armies.

China reportedly plans to devote over 3,000 troops, hundreds of vehicles
and dozens of aircraft to the maneuvers.
http://tass.com/defense/1017824

The exercise, called Vostok-2018 (East-2018), will take place in central and E. Russian
military districts and involve almost 300,000 troops, more than 1,000 military aircraft,
two of Russia’s naval fleets, and all of its airborne units, Shoigu said in a statement.

The manoeuvres will take place at a time of heightened tension between the West and
Russia, which is concerned about what it says is an unjustified build-up of the NATO
military alliance on its western flank.

NATO says it has beefed up its forces in eastern Europe to deter potential Russian
military action after Moscow annexed Ukraine’s Crimea in 2014 and backed a pro-
Russian uprising in eastern Ukraine.

The war games, which will take place from Sept. 11-15, are likely to worry Japan,
which has already complained about a Russian military build-up in the Far East,
something Moscow has linked to Tokyo’s roll-out of the Aegis U.S. missile system.

The country’s ability to defend itself in the current international situation, which
is often aggressive and unfriendly towards our country, means (the exercise) is
justified,” Peskov told reporters on a conference call.

When asked if China’s involvement meant Moscow and Beijing were moving to-
wards an alliance, Peskov said it showed that the two were cooperating in all areas.
-

Russia and China are building a military relationship that should alarm the nations
they are likely to target. Just a few years ago, such an alliance would have been un-
imaginable. During the Cold War, Russia and China were bitter toward each other.

Today, Russia’s military strength is returning to Soviet levels, and its relationship
with China is improving dramatically. Now, they have formed a “strategic partnership,”
as Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said in April.

Have Trade Wars Started ?

Trade Wars will soon significantly impact every national economy,
every national government, and every major international relationship.

America is relinquishing world leadership and is becoming isolationist and protectionist.
President Donald Trump’s motto is “buy American, hire American.” To many Americans,
this sounds terrific; but to foreign leaders, the thought of the world’s most important
economy reducing imports is alarming.

This transformation is already impacting trade relations and facets of some economies.

America is reassessing established trade relationships, seemingly abandoning globalization,
and canceling trade deals. President Trump scrapped the Trans-Pacific Partnership, called
nafta one of the worst deals in history and hinted at reworking it, and threatened to impose
tariffs on imports from Germany, China and Mexico.

Britain’s departure from the European Union has compounded the sense that globalization
is over and that it’s now every man, or nation, for himself. Brexit has also created enormous
uncertainty and anxiety, especially in Europe.

The upheaval in global trade and commerce has caused enormous uncertainty and anxiety.
More and more it is sparking competition and hostility. The world, as daily news headlines
now routinely declare, appears to be entering a period of trade war!
-

When it comes to trade, no nation has more at stake than Germany. As Spiegel Online put
it, “No other large economy is more reliant on the free exchange of goods and services, on
border-free trade and barrier-free exports, than the German economy”

Some looking at this development see Germany and Europe as innocent victims of Donald
Trump and Brexit. Germany’s media are doing a marvelous job at selling this narrative.

But Germany isn’t a poor, helpless victim. On the contrary, all the uncertainty and tension
is giving Berlin an opportunity to develop new trade relationships, to act more aggressively,
especially toward the U.S., and to assume a greater leadership in global trade and commerce.

“We should use the change in the trade strategy of the U.S. to the EU’s advantage by inten-
sifying our talks with interested partners, while defending our interests at the same time.”

Germanys search for partners is mainly taking place in Asia.
-

Jörg Wuttke, president of the European Union Chamber of Commerce in China, told Politico:
“The emergence of ‘Trumponomics’ has opened a window for us to renegotiate” relations with
China. While a change in free trade with America is unwelcome, he noted, “The prospect of a
more equitable trade relationship with Beijing could be a big silver lining for Berlin” (op cit).

The line between cooperation (globalization) and competition (trade war) is fragile. The free flow
of goods, services and people between nations can produce peace, but it lasts only as long as all
sides benefit. If one nation begins to suffer—especially if its distress is a result of the other na-
tions’ success—then tension, resentment and animosity fester. Eventually, the disadvantaged
will defend their interests.

Many historians believe World War i began as a trade war. Will history repeat itself ?
The Bible shows that a nuclear World War iii will be preceded by a global trade war.

JUNE 13 Germany's answer to 'America first' is 'Europe united'
http://www.dw.com/en/germanys-answer-to-america-first-is-europe-united/a-44210514

“ German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas has called for greater EU integration and
“ambition” after Donald Trump’s perceived undermining of trans-Atlantic ties at the G7.
The bloc is facing challenges from inside and out.

Germany has responded to US President Donald Trump’s egotistic policy of ‘America
First’ by calling on the European Union to “bundle its strength” and show more courage
— continuing the more bellicose German rhetoric that followed the US decision last
week to withdraw from a G7 statement.

“Under Pres. Trump, the Atlantic has got wider” German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas
said on Wednesday, standing at a podium emblazoned with the hashtag #EuropeUnited.
“Where the US administration overtly calls our values and interests into question,
we certainly need to take a more robust stance.”

During the speech, delivered to a room full of young Europeans at the Pulse of Europe
event in Berlin, Maas slammed Trump’s willingness to undermine alliances that had
developed over decades “in the time it takes to write a tweet.”

“It was a more surprising tone for a German foreign minister to take,” said Jonathan
Hackenbroich, analyst at the European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR).
“He said it himself in the speech: He never thought he would make such a speech
at some point, especially on trans-Atlantic relations.”

June 25 China, EU to form group to modernise global trade rules
https://www.smh.com.au/world/asia/c...rnise-global-trade-rules-20180625-p4znoc.html

Europe and China agreed on June 25 to update global trade rules and address problems
that have arisen since United States President Donald Trump increased tariff restrictions.

The two blocs will form a group to discuss technology policy, government subsidies and other
problems that are threatening international commerce. European Commission Vice President
Jyrki Katainen said,

“Even though one cannot accept unilateral action—which is in violation of the principles
and rules of the wto [World Trade Organization]—once the U.S. [engages in unilateralism],
it tells us we have to update the wto to be better suited for the existing environment.”

China, EU plan working group to revamp WTO and counter US unilateralism

Mr. Trump continues to impose tariffs on Chinese goods. The most recent is the 25 percent
tariff on 1,100 Chinese goods worth $50 billion in imports. China says it will place tariffs on
American goods in retaliation. Mr. Trump said he would respond, in turn, with even more
tariffs. In total, there are $450 billion in potential tariffs, which covers almost 90 percent of
all the goods China send overseas to the U.S.

On June 22, the EU struck back. Its list of American-made items it placed tariffs on looks like
they sat down and came up with the first half a dozen stereotypically American products they
could think of: for example, Kentucky bourbon, Harley-Davidson motorbikes and denim jeans.
-

The tariff war between these two world powers is starting to worry companies worldwide.
Other governments may be drawn in and decide to barricade against imports with tariffs.

Katainen said the formation of this group doesn’t mean that Europe is siding with China,
but that it is “taking action to protect the global system of regulating free trade.”The EU is
trying to encourage other governments to join the wto by revising some of the regulations.
“I don’t expect these negotiations to be easy,” he continued, “but if nothing is done, the
environment for multilateral trade will vanish.”
-

Isaiah 23, a soon-coming relationship between Europe and China, called a “mart of nations.”
Verses 1-2 reveal the biblical identities of the major nations involved: German-led Europe
(Tyre), Japan (Tarshish) and China (Chittim). This prophecy discusses a European-Asian
relationship, bound by trade and commerce.

JULY 9 Facing U.S. Tariffs, China Embraces German Business
https://www.thetrumpet.com/17491-fa...+u.s.+tariffs,+china+embraces+german+business

China is deepening its economic and diplomatic relationship with Germany to counteract
pressure from United States tariffs. German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Chinese
Premier Li Keqiang met on July 9 in Berlin, where business leaders from both countries
signed $23.5 billion in deals.

Later that same day, China announced that it would free Liu Xia, a controversial political
prisoner. Liu is the widow of one of China’s most famous dissident writers and human
rights activists, Liu Xiaobo.

China insists that Liu’s release has nothing to do with the Berlin meeting,
despite the fact that the news broke only a few hours after the meeting.

A former German ambassador to China told the New York Times that releasing Ms.
Liu is a Chinese “gesture toward [its] most important partner in Europe,” Germany.
https://www.nytimes.com/2018/07/11/world/asia/germany-china-liu-xia-liu-xiaobo-dissidents.html

During Merkel’s visit to China on May 24–25, she asked Chinese President Xi Jinping
to release Ms. Liu. It appears that the Chinese government did as Merkel asked, even
though it officially denies it. Why would China make such a gesture?

Perhaps because it is feeling the heat from the trade war. U.S. President Donald Trump
ramped up the tariff dispute this week by announcing a 10 percent tariff on $200 billion
of Chinese goods. The new tariff is designed to “inflict as much pain on the Chinese
economy as possible,” Geopolitical Futures wrote.
https://geopoliticalfutures.com/daily-memo-trade-war-updates-nato-intrigue-balkan-diplomacy/

China doesn’t import enough from the U.S. to impose similar tariffs,
so it will have to strike back at America through other means.

President Trump has increased the tariffs even faster than China expected.
Geopolitical Futures continued: “To ease the pressure from the U.S., Chinese leaders
are looking far and wide for help from some friends.” China hopes that Europe, which is
also being hit with American tariffs, will side with China against the U.S. Although Europe
does not trust China and fears its increasing global influence, the burgeoning trade war is
forcing these unlikely partners closer together.

China is already Germany’s largest trade partner. Last year,
Germany exported $97.6 billion in goods to China.
Germany was China’s sixth-largest export partner in 2017.
http://www.worldstopexports.com/germanys-top-import-partners/

During the July 9 meeting in Berlin, top German companies including Volkswagen and
bmw signed investment contracts with China. These contracts include plans to produce
electric cars with Chinese companies and move some automobile production facilities
from the U.S. to China. PJ Media called these deals “a gigantic vote of confidence”in China.
https://pjmedia.com/spengler/germany-lines-up-with-china-in-trade-war/

Germany’s economy relies heavily on automobile exports. Facing U.S. tariffs on German
cars, Germany is looking for other markets. In China, it sees a rapidly expanding potential
market. Last year, Chinese car buyers accounted for a large percentage of German car
sales worldwide: half of Volkswagen’s worldwide sales and more than a third of worldwide
sales for Audi, bmw, Mercedes-Benz and Porsche. bmw plans to move some of its U.S.
manufacturing plants to China, allowing the company to avoid U.S. tariffs and be closer
to the potential Chinese market. China welcomes the new industry.
https://www.best-selling-cars.com/china/2017-full-year-china-worldwide-german-luxury-car-sales/

Neither power entirely trusts the other, but trade war with the U.S. is pushing them
to join forces. German newspaper Die Welt summed up the tension in the relationship
between these two powers as a “tightrope walk.”

July 17 EU and Japan Negotiate ‘Historic’ Free-Trade Agreement
https://uk.reuters.com/article/us-j...e-pact-amid-worries-about-trump-idUKKBN1K714I

The European Union and Japan signed a historic free-trade deal on July 17 in Tokyo that
will remove or reduce all tariffs on exports between Europe and Japan. The EU-Japan
Economic Partnership Agreement (epa)will create the world’s largest open economic area,
covering about a third of the global economy and affecting about 600 million people.
https://money.cnn.com/2018/07/17/news/economy/eu-japan-trade-deal/index.html

The ambitious trade pact, which creates the world’s largest open economic area,
comes amid fears that a trade war between the United States and China will diminish
the role of free trade in the global economic order.

The immense trade deal emphasizes the growing economic unification between
Europe and Asia as the world reacts to America’s increasing protectionism.

President of the European Council Donald Tusk celebrated the agreement as
“the largest bilateral trade deal ever.” Along with the free-trade agreement,
Japan and the EU negotiated a data protection agreement on July 17.
http://europa.eu/rapid/press-release_IP-18-4526_en.htm

In that agreement, they agreed to trust that their data protection systems are equal.
This recognition of “reciprocal adequacy” will allow the unrestricted flow of data be-
tween the EU and Japan. According to the European Commission’s press release,
this creates “the world’s largest area of safe data flows.”

The epa and data protection agreements have been in negotiations for several years.
However, the EU and Japan pushed the trade agreement forward in response to recent
U.S. tariffs on steel, aluminum and other goods. The planned U.S. tariffs will hit Europe
and Asia particularly hard, since both regions rely heavily on exports.

China leads the world in exports, followed by the U.S. Germany ranks third, and Japan
is fourth. Viewed as a whole, however, the EU is the undisputed leader in global trade.
As such, it stands to lose the most from U.S. tariffs.

The EU has already imposed retaliatory tariffs on the United States. Japan has threat-
ened similar action. China and the U.S. are waging an intense tit-for-tat tariff war.

But U.S. tariffs have created more than just retaliatory tariffs. They have contributed
to pushing nations like Japan and China to deepen their economic relationships with
Europe. As the U.S. takes a stand, Europe and Asia are uniting to fight back.

After the deal was signed, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzō Abe said, “There are rising
concerns about protectionism, but I want Japan and the EU to lead the world by bearing
the flag of free trade.”

Tusk commented, “We are sending a clear message that we stand against protectionism.
The EU and Japan remain open for cooperation.” Clearly, Japan and Europe are both trying
to present themselves as a foil to the U.S., which they portray as the enemy of free trade.
-

During U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent visit to Europe, he emphasized his irritation
with the EU’s high tariffs on American goods, which existed long before his recent steel and
aluminum tariffs. In an interview with Guardian Unlimited in Scotland, the president called
the EU a “foe” because of its unfair trade practices.

He said that the EU has been taking advantage of America for years with high tariffs. Pre-
sident Trump’s comments brought a lot of criticism from EU chiefs. Tusk responded with a
tweet: “America and the EU are best friends. Whoever says we are foes is spreading fake news.”

President Trump’s slogan is “America First.” But as the Washington Post put it, “America
First” may end up meaning “America Alone.” America’s former allies are uniting against it.

August 20 Germany on Track again World’s Largest Trade Surplus

Europe’s largest economy will likely record the world’s largest trade surplus
three years running, according to data published on August 20.

Despite the International Monetary Fund’s warning that the surplus will lead to
trade tensions, Germany continues to pump out exports and rake in profits.

The German economy is growing in other areas as well. In July, Bundesbank
reported that the country’s second quarter growth rate was regaining momentum
and should remain stable despite trade tensions. The economy grew by a healthy
half-percent over that quarter.

planned, if current trends continue. Though we have yet to see how the rest of the year
will go, the economy is on track to set records.

Not everyone is happy about the German economy. In April, United States President
Donald Trump singled out Germany for using unfair trade practices against the U.S.

He also reprimanded German Chancellor Angela Merkel for her country’s consistent
neglect to meet nato minimum requirements on defense spending. So far, negotiations
have failed to produce improvements. Though its economy is the strongest in Europe,
Germany continues to spend less on defense than the amount mandated by nato.
