Indeed! I think it would be somewhat insulting to her, and to his memory to try and soft-pedal it with PC by down-playing the risk he willingly took, by just extending sympathies as though he had died from pneumonia.

You're bearing false witness. Since the false witness is against a human you hate, you buy into it. That is what makes it true in your book, if it is true to you, and supports your disdain for another, even when it is a known and/or unsubstantiated lie, it is good enough for you.
