I posted this link on facebook and here's how the conversation between this atheist friend and I went:

None taken. =) However, I would need to know what it is you're referring to, to answer your question.

I mean Mel. His racist rants and such? Do you remember? And I'm not hating on him, I just don't see how supporting him is a very Godly thing to do? But I don't follow Godly things, you know this... I'm not hating on Christians either. lol

LOL... Oh, I understand. =D ...I don't know the entire story. I only know what the media told us, and we both know that we can't always trust the media. I'm one of those that try not to judge to quickly without knowing both sides of the story, even with those in my personal every day life. I do know that Mel said something like, "The Jews killed Jesus". Well, technically, that's true. Peter, who was a Jew, even said this in Acts 2:38, "Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Messiah". He's pointing out all of Israel (Jews) as the ones who crucified Him. Also, it was the Jewish leaders, the Pharisee, that had Him arrested to be tried and crucified. They were misleading God's people and they didn't like Jesus pointing this fact out. So, they wanted to get rid of Him. However, just because the Jews were the ones who cried out for His death and it was the Romans who carried out the punishment, doesn't mean that the rest of us are not guilty. We became separated from God and Jesus offered Himself as our sacrifice so that we can have direct access to Him again and have an intimate personal relationship with Him. I'm not trying to sound preachy, I'm just pointing out that Mel is partially correct. Now, if he's said any more then what I've mentioned, that I don't know.

I'll just tell you what I would say and you can take it however you wish. I would say I believe in the movie and I support the truth of the movie. Jesus life and death being portrayed in a movie I can get behind if its true. I dont need to support Gibson.
Gibson is Catholic, he left his wife who was faithful to him in spite of his drinking. He made antisemitic remarks and had a child with his girlfriend. Gibson needs to come to know the Jesus he puts in his movies personally. As a Christian we need to be careful of who we support and why.
And...why would we hold Mel Gibson to a higher standard than we do anybody else?
He's a flawed human being....just like me.
If he makes a movie that promotes understanding and belief in Jesus, do his flaws nullify that?
Seems like Jesus even dealt with less than perfect people that were dong miracles in His name..and told the apostles to leave them alone..

My thoughts...
We're all sinners.
Despite his issues, at least Gibson is trying to present the life of Jesus Christ is an honest, historically accurate way. That's not the way Hollywood prefers to present Jesus Christ. Hollywood generally has a hatred for Christianity, Scripture(except for Scripture that refers to helping the poor and/or eliminating poverty), and the God of the Christian Bible. That same hatred also exposes itself in their mockery of Christianity and Scripture.
As Conservative Christians, we tend to "give credit were credit is due". In other words, when someone(s) who is usually opposed to Christianity says something that is Biblically accurate, Conservative Christians will point it out, commend it, and support it.
Speaking of support, I've noticed that Conservative Christians tend to go beyond supporting and commending the morally correct decisions/thoughts of those who are typically anti-Christian. Conservative Christians pray that the person who did the good thing will have a full transformation to Christianity. (That, of course, just ticks off those Bible/God haters!)
