the prime minister of neighboring bulgaria has also come down on the side of the turkish government...

crossings from turkey into bulgaria are closed but crossings from bulgaria into turkey are still open...apparently bulgaria does not want anything spilling over their border from turkey...
Bulgaria hates the Turks.

Well, most Bulgarians. Some of them really dig Istanbul.

the turkish prime minister has called an emergency meeting of parliament...

however coup affiliated aircraft are apparently still dropping bombs on or near the parliament building...in spite of turkish officials threatening to shoot them down...

CNN turk is back on the air... the official state network is still off the air but the news director is confident that service will be restored soon...

all airports in istanbul now appear to be back under the control of government officials...flights to istanbul have resumed...

erdogan is addressing a large crowd in a speech in istanbul...they are chanting his name...and he also issued a challenge to moderate cleric fethullah gulen to return from the united states to turkey...erdogan has directly accused gulen of being behind the coup attempt...

on the bosporus bridge in istanbul soldiers are leaving their tanks with their hands up...evidently surrendering...

the government asserts that the coup attempt is now over...but even erdogan has acknowledged a 'small disturbance' continuing in ankara...

reports from ankara indicate that fighting there is still going on...

a helicopter controlled by anti government forces has been shot down outside ankara...

if there is any pushback against government attempts to regain full control...it will emerge from ankara...

the government has appointed a new military chief of staff...the commander of the first army command who was one of the first to assure his continuing allegiance to the government...

the status of the previous chief of staff...earlier reported as held hostage...is unknown... it would seem that he is either dead or incapacitated...being held hostage...or complicit in the coup attempt...

turkey's kurdish party...typically no friend of erdogan...has expressed its support for the government against the coup attempt...citing 'democratic politics'

istanbul is still now -completely- in government hands...there is still sporadic gunfire...

and at least one fighter jet is still flying low over istanbul...in spite of threats from government officials to shoot down coup affiliated planes...threats that are increasingly appearing to be empty...

the number of arrests has now risen to 754...

although the government claims that the coup has completely failed in spite of continued clashes in ankara...the military officers involved in the coup...now calling themselves the 'peace at home movement'...insist that they are fighting on... the movement's statement was sent via email from the turkish military general staff press office...which they apparently still control...

fethullah gulen...the moderate turkish muslim cleric now living in the united states...has flatly denied any involvement in the coup attempt...and has in fact condemned the coup attempt...holding that government change should be accomplished through elections... gulen points out that he himself had been oppressed under more than one military coup...and finds the allegations of his involvement in a coup insulting...

german chancellor merkel's office has expressed her personal support for 'the democratic order' in turkey...meaning the erdogan regime...

government officials are now claiming that turkey's military headquarters is back under control of loyalist military forces...

the government claims that those carrying out the coup attempt are no longer in control of any fighter jets...although they still have a few military helicopters...

another high ranking military officer has been arrested...a rear admiral in the turkish navy...photos show him being detained by people in plain clothes...

the death toll is currently at 265...including 104 'coup plotters'...forty-one police officers...and forty-seven civilians...1,440 people were wounded...

a total of 2,839 members of the turkish army have been arrested with more arrests reported to be ongoing... five generals and twenty-nine colonels have been removed from their posts... two senior generals have also been arrested...the chief of turkey's aegean regional command...and the commander of the second army who is the most senior official so far to be arrested...

2,745 judges have also been removed from duty...and five members of turkey's highest judiciary board were also removed...ten members of turkey's highest administrative court have been arrested...warrants have also been issued for forty-eight administrative court members and 140 appeals court members... this appears to be part of a purge of gulenists from the judiciary...which is convenient for erdogan as gulenists in the judiciary have gone after corruption within his administration...

turkey's highest military official...the chief of general staff...-was- being held hostage during the coup attempt...but he was freed after a military operation and has resumed command...the acting chief of staff who served for about two hours in his absence has returned to his regular command...

the armed forces headquarters in ankara was one of the last places still held by anti government forces...after government aligned forces moved to capture this location those inside requested surrender negotiations...all are now in custody and the building is being searched by anti terrorism police units...

anti government forces also captured a frigate and took the head of the turkish fleet hostage at a naval base...

the government is still blaming the gulen movement led by a moderate muslim cleric in exile in the united states...it is claimed that they found lists showing who was going to do various duties under the coup's martial law period...

the borders and airports have been put on alert to watch for prominent members of the gulen movement...who the government suspects will try to flee the country...

eight turkish soldiers escaped to greece in a military helicopter and were arrested by the greek authorities...the soldiers had removed the insignia in order to hide their ranks...turkey claims that they are two majors and a captain and five privates while greece claims that there were two majors and four captains and two first class sergeants and yet another report claims that there was one civilian among the group...they requested political asylum in greece...the turkish government is demanding their extradition...and the greek government is cooperating...

the death penalty is constitutionally forbidden in turkey...but the government is considering reinstating the death penalty for those involved in the coup attempt...a crowd chanting for the death penalty was assured by erdogan that this would be discussed by parliament...

an emergency meeting of the turkish parliament took place today...the session began with a moment of silence...and all four major turkish political parties presented a joint declaration condemning the coup attempt...including parties opposed to erdogan's policies...

the government has sent out text messages calling on turkish civilians to gather again today in support of the government... many of those protesting the coup are not erdogan supporters but still prefer him over a military coup...

civilians are going about their business in istanbul today...erdogan supporters are celebrating on the bosporus bridge as well as posing on top of abandoned military vehicles... civilians were also celebrating in ankara...

some civilians -were- supporting the coup attempt...in one location police attempting to arrest soldiers were overrun by civilians...

the turkish govenrment has received additional international support from presidential candidate hillary clinton...new UK foreign minister boris johnson...the british labor party's 'shadow' foreign secretary...japanese prime minister abe...the chinese foreign ministry...the spanish foreign minister...the president of poland...the emir of qatar...the syrian national coalition which opposes syrian dictator bashar assad...the iranian foreign minister...the pakistani prime minister...the president of afghanistan...the president of azerbaijan...and the hamas terrorist group which is supported by erdogan...

religious representatives have also condemned the coup attempt...including the muslim president of turkey's religious affairs directorate...the greek orthodox patriarch of istanbul who is widely regarded as the 'first among equals' of the eastern orthodox churches...and the chief rabbi of turkey's jewish community...

united states secretary of state john kerry has reiterated the obama administration's support for the turkish government...has stated that turkey's status in NATO is unaffected...and has pledged cooperation in turkish investigative efforts relating to the coup attempt...

kerry also indicated that the united states would consider a turkish extradition request for exiled moderate muslim cleric fethullah gulen...claimed by the turkish government as the mastermind of the coup attempt...however kerry insisted that evidence be provided to support turkey's claims...

erdogan has in fact demanded that the united states arrest or deport fethullah gulen...arguing that if the united states is really an ally of turkey then we will comply...

turkey's prime minister has stated that any country that stands by gulen will be considered an enemy of turkey...which will put the united states in a difficult position if turkey demands gulen's extradition but provides only scant evidence to support their allegations...

in an interview gulen has suggested that erdogan might even have staged the coup attempt himself as a pretext for cracking down on the gulenists...he argues that this coup attempt appeared poorly planned and very poorly executed and did not resemble previous coups...and notes that the primary beneficiary has been erdogan...

american military flights at incirlik air base have been temporarily stopped due to turkey closing its air space to military aircraft... commercial electric power to the air base has been lost and the base is running on internal power sources... the turkish foreign minister claims that there were even 'coup plotters' on incirlik air base and that they have been arrested... centcom has adjusted its flight plans for operations against the islamic state terrorist organization and is working turkey to resume normal operations as soon as possible...the foreign minister has stated that american anti terrorism operations can resume in turkey once turkish anti coup operations are completed...

georgia has locked down its border with turkey...british flights into turkey have been cancelled...

oil tankers have been temporarily banned from the bosporus strait for security reasons...

the coup appears to be practically over as of evening in turkey today...although there are reports that police and loyalists in the military are preparing for more trouble...

in spite of the numerous statements around the world in support of turkey's 'democracy'...it seems that the erdogan regime has already begun using this coup attempt as an excuse to -roll back- many of the trappings of democracy in turkey...including judiciary independence...religious moderation...and human rights as represented by the existing ban on capital punishment...

Interesting...because the last CIA director was on FOX last night and said he thought this was a false flag coup that was worked up by the government for the very purpose of bring harsh restrictions of liberty and for whats his name to attack certain enemies ...

Sounds like it may have been staged.
The old CIA head guy was pretty strait about him thinking it was likely a false flag deal.... now he has been on a few other programs and not mentioned it? So maybe he was told to just go along with the idea it was real coup.

around 6,000 arrests have now been made as part of what is becoming increasingly clear to be an broader purge of turkey's military and judiciary...

many of the same world leaders that supported turkey's government during the coup attempt are now warning that same government against an authoritarian crackdown on all dissidents...
