turkey's highest military official...the chief of general staff...-was- being held hostage during the coup attempt...but he was freed after a military operation and has resumed command...the acting chief of staff who served for about two hours in his absence has returned to his regular command...
the armed forces headquarters in ankara was one of the last places still held by anti government forces...after government aligned forces moved to capture this location those inside requested surrender negotiations...all are now in custody and the building is being searched by anti terrorism police units...
anti government forces also captured a frigate and took the head of the turkish fleet hostage at a naval base...
the government is still blaming the gulen movement led by a moderate muslim cleric in exile in the united states...it is claimed that they found lists showing who was going to do various duties under the coup's martial law period...

eight turkish soldiers escaped to greece in a military helicopter and were arrested by the greek authorities...the soldiers had removed the insignia in order to hide their ranks...turkey claims that they are two majors and a captain and five privates while greece claims that there were two majors and four captains and two first class sergeants and yet another report claims that there was one civilian among the group...they requested political asylum in greece...the turkish government is demanding their extradition...and the greek government is cooperating...
the death penalty is constitutionally forbidden in turkey...but the government is considering reinstating the death penalty for those involved in the coup attempt...a crowd chanting for the death penalty was assured by erdogan that this would be discussed by parliament...
