so the second day of the ark encounter's opening...none other than 'science guy' bill nye accepted ken ham's invitation for a personal tour of the ark...

many people will remember that bill nye and ken ham were opponents in a widely publicized debate over creationism some time ago... the publicity surrounding the debate can be credited with drawing attention...and donations...to ken ham's answers in genesis ministry and its ark encounter side project...

nye opposed the ark encounter project...saying at one point that he hoped it would never be built...but he accepted ham's invitation for a personal tour of the ark...

according to ken ham's blog on the answers in genesis site...nye wanted to begin with the exhibits about the evidence for the genesis flood...and so ham began the tour with those... ken ham reports that they got into heated discussion...which moved from the initial discussion of evidences to the larger issue of worldviews... ham also shared the gospel with nye...

nye brought a film crew...i suppose he considers footage of the ark encounter to be something he can use in future productions...

the most exciting part came at the end of nye's tour...on the first floor of the ark...with many visitors as witnesses...ham asked nye if he could pray for him...and maybe surprisingly...nye permitted this... so ken ham said a prayer over bill nye...praying that his visit would have an effect and that nye would be drawn to the gospel of jesus christ...

i don't know what are the chances of nye coming to christ...let alone subscribing to the young earth worldview presented at the ark encounter... but my understanding is that for such a prominent creationist to get the chance and consent to say a prayer over such an outspoken evolutionist is something highly unusual...

i cannot but think that God was doing some kind of work there!
I am sure the odds of Nye becoming a Christian are no greater than mine were, God can and does save the worst among us, and I would know. Thank you Jesus!!

I saw Ken Ham at a conference in Edmonton a few years back. He was a passionate and informed speaker. He also was an excellent evangelist! He brought other speakers who talked about various science issues, and why evolution could never answer so many questions about physiology.

I wish him well on this endeavour!
Good stuff, sister. I am too, the question is when (probably sometime towards the end of this year).
We could always pick a weekend and make it a CC meet up event Tin!! Wouldnt it be awesome if 40+ " CC'ers" showed up!! Lol. I nominate you as event chairperson. :)

Sounds good to me, but it might have to be in late-ish November. I'm thinking of going on the way home from my brother's wedding in Brazil. :) Are you nominating me as even chairperson because I'm obsessed with biblical creation? Or because I'm an Aussie? Haha!

Aw! Thanks so much! :D I appreciate your kind words. I'll find out within the next few weeks when I'm going and then I'll make a thread and see if we can organise a CC catch-up there. :)

I believe it will be a good tourist attraction that will generate revenue for the state. Atheists are butthurt over this but NASA wastes billions to put a toy car on Mars and they call that progress....go figure

Apples and oranges. Exploring space is most definitely progress.

Genesis 6:14 (ESV) Make yourself an ark of gopher wood. Make rooms in the ark, and cover it inside and out with pitch. 15 This is how you are to make it: the length of the ark 300 cubits, its breadth 50 cubits, and its height 30 cubits. 16 Make a roof for the ark, and finish it to a cubit above, and set the door of the ark in its side. Make it with lower, second, and third decks.

The above is the specs for the ark. It was 450 ft long, 75 ft wide, and 45 ft high. It was made of gopher wood. Gopher wood appears once in the scriptures and is not defined in the Hebrew. It is widely accepted to be either cedar or cypress.
It was covered (inside and out) with pitch. (Pitch, in Hebrew is an interesting word study that I will leave to you). It had three decks with approximately 15 ft between each. It was also covered by a roof that was approximately 18 in above the sides. There has been a lot of discussion about the 18 in space between the roof and the side. It also had only one door.

Noah, had the architect of the universe to guide his construction, gather the animals, and seal the ark for a year.

If you go to visit the Ark Encounter, and I recommend that you do, please keep in mind that this replica in no way resembles the actual ark. Imagine what the inside would look like with all the animals of the world in it at the same time. Only God could put them on the ark and keep them from tearing it apart, or killing each other.

Ken Ham is the figurehead of Answers in Genesis, but he's not the only person. There's a whole team of scientists. And many of them have PhDs.
I know and understand this.

I recently heard(and conversed briefly with) AiG staffer Dr Terry Mortenson(pic below). He made appearances at some Lutheran Churches and then went to North Dakota State University where he took on the questions of students who I am guessing were either skeptics or atheists.

Still interesting to me how Ham & Nye are considered so smart when neither of them has an earned degree beyond a B.S.

I agree with you in part. The dimensions of the Ark are accurate, but naturally, this replica has a few modern additions (that are required by health and safety). Also, we must remember that this is a museum that speculates based on what the Bible says and extrapolates from there, based on a variety of academic disciplines. As for God keeping the animals from killing each other, that probably wasn't necessary. While we know that animals prior to the Great Flood killed and ate other animals etc. (from the fossil record), we know (from the Bible) that God only allowed animals and people to eat meat following the Great Flood.

A year in a dark, damp, and uncomfortable environment. Imagine the noise. Imagine the smell. Imagine how tightly packed the animals and Noah's family were. How can you not believe that only God could make it possible for Noah and all the animals survive the entire period aboard the ark?

Who's to say life on the Ark was dark and damp and uncomfortable? It may not have been super-comfortable, because it was basically a huge animal shelter, but they did have a window all along the top (for air flow and light) and the Ark was water-tight. And yes, the Ark probably was reasonably noisy at times and smelly too. The first 40 days and nights would've been especially difficult for Noah, his family and all of the animals. Were conditions cramped on the Ark? Not necessarily. Scientists have had educated guesses (based on a whole host of factors) that there were perhaps no more than several thousand animal and birds on the Ark. They would've filled one deck and there were three decks. At least one of the decks would've been used to store supplies for Noah, his family and all of the animals and crops to be grown after the Flood. There would've been sufficient room for Noah and his family. God definitely protected them all, but a miracle wasn't particularly necessary.

is this one of those "correlation does not equal causation" things? :)

having a degree does not make a person particularly intelligent, and intelligent people may not have degrees?

disclaimer: the poster does not consider Mr. Nye to be at all wise. ;)

to be fair i don't think either ham or nye purposely promoted themselves as experts...more like advocates or spokesmen...

actually the fact that both ham and nye had a similar level of education helped to ensure that their debate was relatively fair...

dr. mortenson who you mentioned is definitely an expert in his field though...i have several of his lectures on DVD...he is especially interested in how changing scientific ideas have influenced the church... he was also an editor on the book 'coming to grips with genesis' which i highly recommend...

One thing that is somewhat interesting to me about these two guys is that neither has an earned degree beyond a B.S.

Nye has a bunch of honorary doctoral degrees.
Jesus's Disciples didn't have a degree and they helped changed the world.
