I jog six days a week. Athletics kind of runs in my family. Actually, right now I'm training for a half marathon, which I'm pretty stoked about. Hoping to beat my time. I'm not one of those insanely awesome marathon runners or anything. I just enjoy staying in great shape. It's also a great destresser for me. If I don't jog, I at least get out for a walk or something. That's not to say that I'm super skinny, either, as I do eat a lot. I try to stay healthy, but alas, I have quite the sweet tooth. I just baked cookies over the weekend; man, are they good! Anyway, I think it's important to eat healthy and stay active in whatever way you can. I take care of my body because God blessed me with one.

Well, funny this topic should be brought up, I haven't joined the gym, I haven't started running, I have started walking though.... It's quite enjoyable, I stcik the earphones in and play some music.. well, we'l se how it goes I've been on hols so I have 21 days to get walking lol.

I always have used the excuse I work 12hr shifts, but then realised that was no excuse at all becasue although I do work that, i only do it for 4 days then i get four off.. so it was a motivation thing. Anyhow, this is walking (past week and this) maybe jogging next:eek:

If you're going to skimp on sleep, stay away from high glycemic sugary or refined flour foods like white bread, regular soda, white rice and potatoes. When you combine those with lack of sleep you get a recipe for Metabolic Syndrome. Its very bad. Your body basically starts accumulating abdominal fat (the worse kind there is) and that leads to type 2 diabetes and also high triglyceride counts (fat in the blood). Substitute high fiber carbs like whole wheat breads, cereals, leafy greens, fresh fruits, etc.. and lean sources of protein (fish, beans, lean cuts of beef, etc..). Sorry if you already knew all that.
I did NOT know all of that. :) Thanks! Something to keep in mind. I do like my Dr Pepper, but I'm not a huge fan of white bread/rice or potatoes. I like whole grains, fresh veggies and fruit. I'm not much of a red meat eater unless it's in a casserole or something, but I'm a fan of chicken and fish. Fish is supposed to be brainiac food and I need all the help I can get. ;)

Being healthy sucks. I wanna eat fast food every single day. I like cheeseburgers and fries, ice cream and twinkies. I especially have a thing for oreo's or anything with chocolate frosting on top of it. I really love coca cola. I want to get an Iv and have a coke drip goin 24 hours a day.

So yeah blah blah blah being healthy is the christian thing to do, but i dont have to like it.

Sounds good, CCG :)

I want to thank Gabe again for sharing info on nutrition. I tried to start a thread about this a few months ago and invited nurses, dieticians, trainers and other pros to share tips, but no one did. If we really cared about one another as we should, we would. Thanks for caring, Gabe :)

This may sound very "worldly" but if I'm being totally honest, I have to admit my two greatest motives for fitness right now are 1. being single and 2. being cheap and poor. I figure I'll NEVER find someone if I don't try to stay in shape and I'm also finding out that prevention (preserving your health) is a WHOLE lot less expensive than having things go wrong and then trying to pay doctors to fix it.

Zero, don't give up!! I know it's terribly frustrating. Over almost 3 months, I've only lost 6 pounds and like you, I have sometimes wished I'm anorexic... but obviously, that would only cause a whole host of problems in the other direction...

I wish everyone lived closer--it would be really fun to start some kind of fitness group. I could use some tips when it comes to the free weights... My ex was studying to be a trainer (this was years ago) and the first week I tried the routine he made for me, I literally hobbled into work and everyone thought I'd fallen down a flight of stairs. But the next week, it got easier...

Now I just rely on walking and the elliptical trainer (the "hamster wheel", because I feel like a little hamster running in a wheel when I'm on it). I actually hope to meet a guy someday who's a bit of a drill sergeant in this area--someone I can work out with and who kind of barks at me to go with him to the gym (but in a respectful way! You know, something like, "Look Babe, I know you can do an extra set of reps today--you've trained hard, and I know you can do it," NOT, "Hey, Pillow Butt, let's get the flab moving right on out to the gym! Roll out that spare tire and let's get going!!") Um, NOT exactly edifying or motivating... :)

That... explains a lot of my weight problems actually. I've never been great at sleeping and I eat tons of potatoes, breads etc... it's cheap and filling... (and I'm poor and hungry). I'm burning near 1300 calories a day. I ride my bike everywhere I go (about 8 miles daily) and then I have a fitness class at my college that for an hour where I lift weights and do a ton of cardio. I'm in the best shape of my life but my gut and chest need "defined". Takes time I guess...
Actually, if you are burning that much through physical activity everyday you should be consuming starchy carbs like white rice, pasta and potatoes. If you are still accumulating abdominal fat then you should probably cut back on the carbs some, or at least switch out some starchy carbs for high-fiber carbs. You will probably feel more energy if you do this because taking in too many starchy carbs makes a person sleepy and lethargic.

Well then you're on the right track. Chicken and fish are good, lean protein sources. The best protein comes from egg whites (whey protein) and milk (casein). The next best is fish, followed by beef and chicken, then pork and soy. The omega-3 fatty acids in fish are good for the brain and for increasing your HDL cholesterol (good cholesterol).

If you are skimping on sleep, I would recommend taking a baby aspirin everyday because it prevents the platelets in your blood from sticking together. That prevents strokes and heart attacks. There was a female surgeon on Oprah who exercised vigorously everyday, ate right, but did not get enough sleep. She suffered a heart attack (or was it a stroke??) and survived, but she believes it was because of her lack of sleep. She was also physically fit and in her 30's or 40's (I can't remember exactly).

Yes, its frustrating. have u considered a gym membership? If you shop around online you can find a good deal. I got a 3 yr membership at 24 hour fitness for under $14 a month (prepaid 3 yrs). I think its worth it because a piece of exercise equipment easily cost $500, and they breakdown. For the same price I have access to an entire gym full of equipment, plus classes and trainers.

I've gained 5 lbs since I started the class 2 months ago... but it's funny that I bought shorts 1 month ago that no longer fit me right. XD I have a body that quickly adjusts to whatever I do to it(as far as exercise). If I sit around and do nothing but eat, I will gain weight and fast. But if I exercise etc, I can pretty well eat whatever I want and still watch the inches fly off. I started my class wearing 38 wide jeans and now my 36 inches are falling off without the belt. It's irritating cuz I hate wearing belts, but cool at the same time cuz i'm quite obviously about 4 inches thinner than I was. Essentially the 5 pounds I've gained is however many pounds of fat i've lost in muscle, PLUS 5 pounds of muscle. My Instructor noticed the change and so did one of the ladies in my class.

I feel an obligation to take care of my body as a person, not a Christian, the condition of our bodies dictates our quality of life and it makes sense to get the maximum out of life, also Kim is right, it's much cheaper to be healthy than not and then have to deal with it, very expensive, and depressing.

I watch my diet, the only thing I've changed recently is substituting sugar in my tea for sweetners and no more soft drink, that took about a 1lb of sugar out of my diet everyday :D which can only be good I hope. I've gotten into the habit of having a fresh fruit smoothie for breakfast, so that 3 of my 5 a day taken care of at breakfast.

Besdies that I walk and don't drive, for me walking for an hour a day is about the minimum, so I don't feel the need to set aside time and money for the gym, the best exercise is free ;) all that said I'll never give up burgers and the occasional philly steak.

I don't splurge on gym memberships either. I don't like gyms. They're stinky. :)
I teach dance, run with my dogs, do crunches/lunges/pushups daily and it works for me....free
The Wii fitness programs are pretty good to get you up and moving too. :)

I used to have a membership at a women's gym but it was getting so expensive that I bought the elliptical instead... $350 or so a year for a gym membership and I was a member for like 5 years... So I took the $350 I would have spent for another year and bought the hamster wheel instead.

I'd probably only join a women's gym again if I did... A co-ed gym would make me way too self-conscious.
