I know not all people will agree with this, but the pastor I'd heard preach about this subject had been a barber for several years... and he started asking God exactly what hair lengths were appropriate, because he discovered very quickly that different hair lengths worked for different people (such as, those with shorter or longer necks, etc.)
After a lot of prayer and study, he believed God was explaining to him that it was more about character than exact hair length--for example, is the man taking the lead in the household? Is he providing for his family and setting an example as a church leader as God has instructed men to do? Things like this were the pressing issue... if someone was being a man according to God's provisions and guidelines... was most important, not the exact length of his hair.
My husband had long hair in the start when we became a couple, but had to cutt it after some time. It was getting all thin on the top. That was sure a pity, and I really had to get used to it seeing him with short hair then. Now I am all used with it. I always got most attracted to men with long hair, but still, I beleive God made him have long hair when meeting me so that I would get attracted to him more easily then too Now it is sure fine he has no long hair anymore. Loving him is worth much more than breaking up after he cutt it.
He was even afraid of me leaving him once he cutt his hair, because he understood how much I loved it being long on him. But it didn't suprised me and I understood that he might have had to cutt it sometime anyways, 'cause I could see his hair thinning a lot too. But I didn't left him for that!
And besides, then I am a shame to God since I have short hair, I guess...
But well, still He loves me, and so does He about men having long hair too.
We are all saved by grace, not by our hair.
And it was Paul writing that in a different time than now.
Sharp is right... I'm sorry for getting off-track with this thread... but I also agree with him--if we have to pay strict attention to "long" or "short" when it comes to hair, how long is too long and how short is too short?
