Glasses... Hot, or Not?

This. I have always found women with glasses hot. Unless they are some of those old grandma frames.

I have always worn glasses since junior high. I should have worn them when I was younger, too. I messed up my vision a bit from squinting to see before getting my first pair.

I always think I look nerdy with glasses on, and wish I could wear contacts. I have tried putting them in during fittings and can't seem to do it. I am also really squeamish about getting stuff near my eyes. My brother and his first wife got Lasik. But the experience of the surgery and the first month or so after don't sound very fun. So I am probably stuck with glasses.

I grew up in a similar period and glasses were always nerdy. I do see some guys out there that can pull off glasses without looking nerdy, but most of them are ex NFL players.

I have a new problem now that I am in my 40s where I need to start using progressive lenses at some point. I was too stubborn to get them this time because that would be admitting I am getting old or something. So, I end up having to take my glasses off to read, or I need lots of light. Bleh. Oh, and I added the blue blocker, or whatever it is called. Blue light is starting to make me get headaches the last year or so. My lenses don't look yellow, but everything has a slight tint. it has been great. I was feeling too nauseous to work a lot of the time before I got this. I have a 30" monitor at work. (I also started setting everything to a warm color setting to help.)

Setting everything I could to be white text on dark background has been really helpful ( outlook had a setting for it and you can get a high contrast plugin for chrome that "inverts colors" (makes pictures look weird though) Anyway I don' t expect I'll be changing that decision, I like being able to see straight at the end of the day.

My Linux environment is set up like that, including PyCharm, gvim, etc. I think the fluorescent lights were messing with me, too. I used to have something over my monitor to help block those out.

That does make me think I could check out webpage defaults. Most of the internal pages I use are white backgrounds. I use those for ticketing, code reviews, etc.

As with anything, it's all about the person more than the accessories but, sometimes a sleek pair of glasses is like a bow on top of the present.

Hey Everyone,

Thanks for the awesome discussion and kinds words! It's interesting to hear other people's (bespectacled) experiences.

Something I'm wondering about all of you who wear glasses--do you find that they hold you back in any way? Because that's truly the part I hate.

For instance, I'm a bit of an amusement park freak. Back in the day, I went on a water slide that was so high, climbing the stairs just to get to the top almost gives you a nosebleed. I wore contacts back then, and happily went on all the most exciting rides without a second thought.

These days, I always have to plan around my glasses and it's really a pain in the butt. I truly can't see without them, not even to make it to front of the line, so I always have to worry about how I'm going to carry a case, and haven't found one I'd trust on water rides (I don't care if they get wet--but if they get smashed, I would literally be up a creek.)

I also had a possible opportunity to snorkel this summer, which is something I've always wanted to do, but I realized I would have to get specifically-made goggles, even just to take swimming lessons. The highest prescription I could find was -8.0, and mine is considerably higher than that (along with a few other factors the generic ones wouldn't cover.)

I've also wanted to possibly get into canoeing, but seeing as I somehow fell into the water on a high school trip (I don't even remember how it happened), now I would have to worry about losing my glasses if that happened again.

Henceforth, I can't participate in any activity involving water until I buy a pair of prescription goggles, and I hate that limitation.

It wouldn't be so bad if I fit into the neat little mold of those "buy one pair, get one pair" ads you always see on television, but my lenses are so specialized that the cheaper frames aren't strong enough to hold them.

Does anyone else find that wearing glasses/contacts holds you back? If so, how do you work around it?

Yes, I have worn glasses most of my adult life... While prescription is not that bad and I was an Infantry Officer for 20 years I realized that seeing during all sorts of physical activity was critical and how I looked was not so important...
Hence the military issued BCGs (birth control glasses) made it that much easier for our decision making... you really didn't have much of a choice during field training exercises - contacts were not a practicle and reliable option...
The most practical and reliable option for such physical activity were low-cost high-durable BCGs during Field Operations...
Reliability (to prevent falling off or loss) were to have a sports-band (strap) to secure the glasses upon your head... For added insurance it was always smart to have an extra pair...

Bottom-line: I'd suggest a nice pair of glasses to suit your style preferences for normal day to day wear, and suggest a couple low-cost, highly durable sports-glasses with strap for activity wear... Where in these cases it's really a matter of function over form...
There is something to say for someone's self-confidence (confident in their own skin so to speak) when they don't really give a care for what other people might think of what you look like in your glasses. Besides, the ones who know your seoul are really the only ones that matter... The One that matters will know your seoul and adore your glasses...

Well...I enjoy being able to see. Honestly the only problem I have with wearing glasses is I feel like it makes me look like I don't have eyes... (especially in pictures) .... Oh also when you get caught in pouring rain and they get all wet , but you can't use your shirt to dry them cause it's soaked too so you're stuck with streaky glasses. Lol

lol Almost - that's just as good...
Actually, they were basically considered so horrid that the premise was that if one were to actually wear them anywhere other than the field that you were basically guaranteed not to get lucky... Hence, if one wanted to guarantee no chance of anyone finding you remotely desirable - simply where these bad boys in public - and guarantee that you were not going to get picked up on and mitigate all risk of accidentally getting anyone pregnant while you were out and about on the town... lol

I have worn glasses since 10th grade. I don't like them because like Pipp said about the rain. And when its cold out and you come inside they fog up. Or if it's hot out and you're sweating they fog up and sweat falls on the lenses or they slide off your face if you are looking down at something.
I prefer contacts but they have started to bother my eyes. considered lasik but at my age doesn't seem much of a point.

On the upside I like to see.

I remember as a kid my mom wearing those huge bug eye sunglasses and always thought they looked ridiculous. Now they are back in style.

My eyesight is pretty bad lol, but I've always enjoyed the option of removing my glasses to truly focus on a conversation without visual distractions. "Hot or Not?" I think the question is unfair.... Girls can make anything HOT!!

A cogent point, and probably the reason for the social stigma...tism. Eyeglasses are a big blazing sign that the wearer has a weakness. We like to hide our weaknesses and finding out about other people's weaknesses is generally a turn off, but you can't hide glasses and use them at the same time.

Hey Seoul! What a nice thread! Something I can post about too, lol. I wear glasses…as you can see. I was diagnosed with myopia a couple of years ago due to excessive reading (I just LOVE reading books....my dad has a library in the living room…about over 200 books…read about 50% of them, plus more from my Kindle and I have been affected ever since. I read too much where my eyes would be close to the pages without relaxing them…). And thanks to smartphones and computers…we look at screens way too much than our eyes need to. If you examine the eye and the way it worse, it shouldn’t be focused on an object too close for more than 30 minutes without a least relaxing them. This has caused the eye to lack flexibility resulting in near-sightedness/myopia…where you have difficulty seeing things far away.


I used to wear single vision glasses as I expected my eyes to correct over time…like they always say, right? Unfortunately, they got worse. I had to get stronger ones (double vision) and still I couldn’t even see through double vision glasses. Instead of glasses healing me…or somewhat correcting my eyesight…they have made them worse to the point that I can’t walk around with no glasses whatsoever…it depends anyway. I’m no the only one. Many people have experienced the same thing. I have done research and found they are ways in which your eyes can be cured naturally…but, I won’t get into that as the subject was not about cure but the feeling of having glasses. I just help to let ya’ll know that these days…the eye glasses of this day…they don’t work…they just don’t. Sighs….anywayyy

When I was younger I used to have a problem wearing glasses in public. But, then I was told they were a new fashion trend…so, why not? Anyway, I sometimes don’t like taking selfies with my glasses….more of me seems to be hidden behind glasses...when I put them off….I seem more transparent, you know? That’s what I noticed about people who do wear glasses all the time. When they do out them off for just a little while…you see more of their features than what you thought you knew. It’s like…their vulnerability is opened….exposed in some way. There’s also the insecurity with wearing glasses….I feel blocked from the real world between my eyes and these thick lenses in my way, you know?

Currently, I am practicing eye exercises. They are said to be of benefit and a cure for the eyes suffering from myopia. And they do work! You basically stretch them accordingly so that your eye muscles can extend and do what they were made to do. I’ve read testimonials of those who have achieved 20/20 vision due to this. It’s what you call the Bates method. You can google it if you are interested. I’m sure when God designed our eyes….He never intended them to be locked up staring at a bright screen from a smartphone 24/7.
