You owe your allegiance to the non-American party of CC Singles! :p

It is STAY-tus!
This stay-stuff is baffling me...why are you talking about it all the time, Roh_Chris?:p

Would that be the Norwegian way of saying it?

that's how I'd explain the American way of saying it to a Norwegian
in Norwegian it would be .... erh ..... sta-tus (a as in lard and u as in rude )

can you guys imagine my frustration on the occasions I've tried learning other languages VIA English?
While trying to find out what a word in... say Spanish , sounds like, I first have to find out what the author think it sounds like in English :p

The pronunciation is completely based on context.

If, for example, you were wanting to know which floor the LIFT was on...STAY-TUS.
If you need to check the amount of petrol in your car...STAYTUS.
If you're wondering if your toMAHtoes are ripe yet....STAYTUS.
If you're wondering if this lovely Sheila, or attractive bird will go on a date with you...STAYTUS.

HOWEVER

If you're wondering when the elevator will arrive, STAT-US
If you're curious about the level of gas in your big American SUV....STAT-US.
If you're not sure the toMAYtoes are ready to pick yet....STAT-US.
Or if you're curious about the interest of the hot babe....STAT-US.

I can't agree more. I mean, my cat speaks Norwegian, and how am I ever going to understand him if I can't learn how to pronounce "status" correctly?!!

Just kidding.

I don't have a cat.

Hello! We need your input!

Roh_Chris and I are debating on the word "status" and its pronunciation.

He says the correct way is "STAY-tis"
I say, "STAT-is"

How do YOU say it?
I just say Stat-us

PoetMary kind of beat me to this but for the record...

Alas, I was raised to speak nothing but the boring, bland, all-too-common English of the Northern United States. Therefore, I say "stat-us."

However... When trying to catch the attention of a dashing gent with an enticing British accent...

That pronunciation just might be on the table for debate.

(And, for the sake of love--or a giant crush--I just might be willing to go over to the dark side.)

Now if only Roh-Chris would be kind enough to introduce me to said dashing gent... (You DO have friends, don't you, Roh-Chris???) :p

Oh wait.

You said you can't cook.

Nevermind. :)

Cookies and milk, everyone!! I answered the question... Where are my cookies and milk? I feel like oatmeal raisin today. And not to sound like a diva or anything, but only 1% lowfat milk, please. I don't want to spoil all the work I'm about to do at the gym. (Besides, if I save 50 calories on the milk, that TOTALLY justifies eating 3 more cookies...)

Best, most definitive reply yet. Three points.

Statis... Did you mean statice? That's the wispy stuff florists add to bouquets, or used to. It sheds all over the floor. No statice for me please.

I checked PayPal, and neither one of you has increased my financial status by even a dime. So, I'm withholding my vote.

Apparently, the answer is "both / either"; 'data' is pronounced [ at least ] two ways also.

You are both right.

Do I get cookies from both of you, now?

:)
