Alright so I was on a date the other night that ended a bit awkwardly...long story short we were driving home and the radio station started up a relationship show called loveline. Well the first caller had a question about his relationship with his boyfriend yada yada...my date made a rather disparaging comment which made me just sit in awkward silence for a few moments when she was like oh let me guess you dont have a problem with it do you? I said not really and then she started lecturing me...needless to say we wont be going back out.

But it does make me wonder...how important is it that you share similar political/social beliefs with your partner?

its important just as child rearing and religious beliefs I thnk there has to be more than common ground. OHH (socially) and the person that comes into my life has to either love or have respect for the 49ers!

It depends on what the beliefs are. I'm not a very political person if you are talking right-wing vs. left-wing (I think both sides have good and bad things about them). But I usually find certain types of opinionated people difficult to get along with, even if I actually do agree with some of the things they are saying, I don't like people getting all in-your-face about their opinion.

I have a few hot buttons myself that I could not tolerate being divided in... But as far as which president is better to vote for, it isn't that big of a deal for me if we don't agree.

well... your political/social beliefs should be shaped by your faith. I would say , you gave each other a pretty good indication to each other about your faith values.

How is a view on homosexuality a "political belief"?

Study your bible, homie.

As much as I hate politics, unfortunately I have very strong opinions about certain issues. My ex-wife had very opposite views, I came to realize that political views are so often taken from our opinions views and beliefs in so many other realms of life to, as barlygurl mentioned, part of that is our beliefs. We were both christians, but had very opposite view points on what that meant. So I guess since political views are kind of stems of our beliefs, I'd have to say that it's pretty important.

I'm not big on politics, so i don't have many views on most of it. More likely my views are shaped by my faith, as someone stated above. And someones spiritual and doctrinal beliefs being similar to mine is very important.

Yes, political beliefs are somewhat important. If both parties are passionate about politics or even just keep up with politics, then it's important as that topic will come up between them sometimes. So, my faith shapes my politics and that is a reason why I couldn't date a super liberal person.

I think politics are bigger deal in other countries. possibly more so in the usa as there are really only two parties and they sort of seem to dictate what kind of a person you are as they are oooosite ends of the spectrum. it isn't something that would really bother me unless they took it ti the extreme.

social beliefs I thinj need to be more similar so you can function as a couple. I think they are a product of your upbringing. having met people with similar upbringings to myself I find we share a lot of beliefs.

There might only be 2 main parties in power but you got plenty of different political belief systems here. You got political Anarchists, Liberals, Socialists, Communists, the list goes on....Most of them don't have any power as a group but there are plenty of individuals that have those kinda preferences.

I could care less about politics, as long as he isn't super extreme on his views. I am not sure if I could ever date an American (even though I kind of was last year lol). I guess it depends on his views on war, guns and religion, and all that. At this point I don't think I could ever move there, I am Canadian and rather stay that way. I like my country and rather not move. If I ever do move, it would be to Europe.

Why are Canadians so scared of guns? I got a friend that lives in Canada and every time she comes to the U.S. to visit she is always wiggin out thinking somebody is gonna shoot her. lol

Not scared of guns. Just no desire for them in our homes - or in our schools.

It's important to me that he and I agree on the black and white points of doctrine, but not necessarily the gray ones. He and I should agree on child rearing, finances, housekeeping, and maybe some politics. However, I lean towards the left, and if he's a right winger, that's not that big of a deal. As long as he and I can discuss the topics at hand in a civil manner, he can vote elephant all he wants.

child rearing... -LOL- Goodness. I need serious help.

As to the topic, it ain't so important nowadays. I'm getting tired of my religion and beliefs conflicting with how I want to treat other people.
