In Iceland (where I'd love to go visit one day), your last name is based on your dad's first name.

So, since my dad's name is Dan, I would be Nuke Dansson. If i was a girl, I would be Nuke Dansdottir. Or would it be Nukette Dansdottir?
Or Nukette Dansdottir-Pooch?

It depends on the name. For some it might be beneficial to change it.

I knew someone who was called pretty - a Christian Asian lady.
She got engaged to a man whose surname was love.

They didn't marry in the end but could you honestly spend the rest
of your life called Pretty Love!

Or what about the woman called Amy who married someone called Mr Mann

A-Mann (amen)

Good job she was a Christian :D

Oh that's the same in some parts of India too!!! The kids take the first names of their dads. And that tradition keeps continuing.

In other parts of India, they have a family name and people abide by it. Usually, the men take upon themselves to keep the family name while the women get "married off" into another family, and take that family's name.

False. Traditionalism is maintaining traditions because "that's how things have always been done" and you find a particular value in that. If someone simply maintains a tradition because THEY find value in it, then they are a traditionalist. If they judge people who don't follow their tradition, then they are elitist because they are elevating their tradition above other practices.

I direct you to the second definition of the word "elitism."

Belief that a woman taking her husband's surname is "how it should be," (despite the fact that it's culturally and not biblically driven), and presuming that someone who does not do this is lesser (you used the word "pukism" I believe) is the creation of an ELITE system.

Those who do as you prefer are part of the "select group"...those who do otherwise are "outliers," "unbelievers," "puke-ish," "not members of the cool-kids club," etc.

So you are conscious that YOU are a member of a special group...and they are not.

Kind of like the Pharisee who prayed, "oooh God, I thank you that I am NOT like this tax collector..."

noun1.practice of or belief in rule by an elite.

2.consciousness of or pride in belonging to a select or favored group.

I disagree that you probably disagree with your actual friends because they shouldn't disagree with you, and if they do, then I disagree with their disagreements.

SS, you are my sister in Christ, and that means more to me than you'll ever know. What's awesome about that is nothing can ever change that. Think Romans 8:38-39 and God's love; well, same thing with my brotherhood, faults and all.

Thanks for everyone's input so far! I'm glad people chimed in with how surnames are used in different cultures and mentioned that the tradition of the woman taking the man's name is not universal.

An aside: I once gave piano lessons to some kids who have a hyphenated last name, but each of their parents, though married, kept their own names. One parent's surname was Keane, and the other Miller. The kids' last name was Keane-Miller, so naturally, I referred to them as the Mean-Killers.
