The thing that keeps me on my knees is the difference between Grace and Karma…

You see, at the centre of all religions is the idea of Karma. You know, what you put out comes back to you; an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth, or in physics – in physical laws – every action is met by an equal or opposite one. Its clear to me that Karma is at the very heart of the universe. I’m absolutely sure of it.

And yet, along comes this idea called Grace to upend all that “As you reap, so will you sow” stuff. Grace defies reason and logic. Love interrupts, if you like, the consequences of your actions, which in my case is very good news indeed, because I’ve done a lot of stupid stuff.

This is a short collection of quotes from missionary and author, Elisabeth Elliot (she is missionary Jim Elliot's widow).

Hello @BlessedByGod, you're welcome, and you are correct, there are many more wonderful Christian quotes from her.

In case you don't know the Elliot's story, Missionaries Jim and Elisabeth were headed to the rain forest of Ecuador to work with a stone age tribe of Indians there (to present the Gospel and lead them to Christ). Jim, and his companion missionaries, went ahead of their wives and were speared to death by members of the tribe at their first meeting.

I believe that it was just two years later that Elisabeth packed up their now 3 yr old daughter and went to Ecuador to try to finish the job that her husband had started. She, in fact, met with and then led to the Lord the very men who had murdered her husband (along with much of the rest of the tribe as well).

Honestly, it sound familar, but I am not sure if I am mixing up there story with another husband and wife.
Either way, thank you for your kindness in sharing about there story. The truth that those quotes held were very true and beautiful (as all truth is...) indeed.

The story is in book form Through Gates of Splendor. The story of the reaching of the Auca Indians for Christ is continued in The End of the Spear by Steve Saint (the son of Nate Saint, one of Jim Elliot's fellow martyrs) who was raised among the tribe that slaughtered his father.

Sometime ago (when I was growing up) the culture seemed obsessed with a particular question, a question that I don't think anyone believed was truly answerable, but a question that was, nevertheless, posed regularly, "what is the meaning of life?".

From commercials on TV (that used it as a humorous part of their ad campaigns), to magazine cartoons depicting a couple determined to reach a guru sitting on the peak of a mountaintop, the question was everywhere, but the answer was nowhere to be found.

I too was baffled by that question, until I became a Christian, that is. Here's a quote that I believe to be the most concise answer to that question that I know of, published all the way back in 1647. It's a two-part answer, the first answer being for everyone, everywhere (Christians and unbelievers alike), the second answer being for Christians alone (as well the elect angels, of course).

It's Q & A #1 from the Westminster Standards, Shorter Catechism (w/Scripture references incl).

Q. What is the chief end of man?​
A. Man's chief end is to glorify God, (1) and to enjoy Him forever. (2)​
