Today we got the news that our paychecks were not available. Where were they? Somewhere in the FedEx system. Why were they there? They didn't ship anything Friday. Why did the workplace powers-that-be give the checks to FedEx today (to be delivered to the workplace tomorrow) instead of just driving the checks a whole 25 miles over to the workplace themselves? Um... nobody can figure that one out.

In the meantime I have a bill that is to be paid tomorrow. It's a bill that is paid through a checking account automatic withdrawal. If I get my paycheck tomorrow I can't just leave work and pay it, and I get off work AFTER the bank is closed.

Now if I were the kind of employee who shows up late, does his job halfheartedly and sometimes calls in sick just because he doesn't feel like going to work I wouldn't have any grounds to complain. But I'm there every day on time. Every single day. Last week when it was icy I was there every day I was scheduled to work, on time every day. I kind of expect at least the same level of reliability from my employer.

"But they can't help it the weather was bad last week." No they can't. I couldn't help it there was snow and ice on the roads either - but I TOOK MEASURES TO MAKE SURE I GOT THERE ON TIME! When FedEx (hitherto known as FedUp) didn't pick up the checks Friday it would have been very simple to decide to drive the checks over today instead of giving them to FedEx to deliver a day late.

Why am I so upset about this? I had to borrow money from my grandmother to cover that bill. "Hey Grandma, can I borrow some money for one day? My workplace dropped the ball." Yeah, that was fun.

Okay I'm through.

As someone who has worked in accounting for almost three years and has seen a payroll company fail to get payroll processed in time for payday (and it was the last payday before Christmas at that), I can say that that is totally unacceptable and you have good reason to be unhappy. You have every reason to make a stink about it both with your employer and with the payroll company if they employ one.

So Saturday, I had a gig with a rehearsal in the morning and the show at night. Between the two there was about a six hour window in a town two hours away, so it was not worth it to go back home. Among other things such as taking my kid to the movies and buying a bunch of CDs (Janis Joplin, U2, Seals & Crofts), having a great dad and daughter day, I bought shoes for the concert.

Why? I had left the shoes at home in a dash to get out. I had them in my hand, then set them down to check on something in the kitchen, then forgot them. This would have been my last time wearing them anyway; the soles were coming apart and they were kind of cheap to begin with and not worth repairing. Though I hate shopping for shoes because I have a very high instep, I finally found some great black dress shoes at a discount place for $35 bucks. The soles have those "gellin'" inserts and they are very comfy. I kind of know how women feel now when they score the perfect pair of shoes.

ChandlerFan: I didn't have to raise a stink, everyone else was doing a good job of that. Lot of unhappy people at work today. Especially the ones who are not on the schedule but came in to get their checks.

I muttered to one of the managers, "I wonder if it scares any of the customers when they walk in to a lobby full of workers who look really upset." :p

everyone should have stopped and said, no pay no work.

I know I would have. stiff me on pay like that and you can bet I won't lift a finger until I am paid what I am owed.

That's a great way to ensure that you don't have a job any more. Seriously jobs are hard to find and easy to lose in this eceonomy, it's just how it is.

Sorry but when you sign the paperwork and you are to be paid on "x" day and you are not. to be frank its breech of contract. I don't work for free. if you can't pay me when you say you will, well on said day no pay, no work until paid in full.

That awkward moment when you wish you could take some kind of revenge on someone you really don't like, but know that God is watching. Hmph!

I wish I could find the link, bless it...Earlier today there was a post on reddit about how American workers (predominantly low earners) are stiffed out of an alarming amount of pay, like $40 - $60 billion. I forget the time frame and exact number.

Tonight would be a nice night to lay out under the stars.

I stopped by the art studio briefly today to take a picture of the stained glass coffee mugs, since I haven't done that yet, and they were gone. I think they were sold!
