God sent me a birthday cake yesterday.
My neighbor - the lady with the fat chihuahua. I have written about her before once or twice. Last summer, she knocked on my door with a lemon cake, talking about how I always say that I love lemon cake, so I have to try hers. She went on about how she makes them for some restaurants and other clients... Now, I had never mentioned lemon cake to her before, but I am not going to argue with someone who is about to give me cake...besides, she is kind of scary. In the fall, I returned the favor, making her my mother's zucchini spice cake, so I guess now we are cake buddies.
Flash forward to my birthday yesterday. I had just said goodbye to my friend, who is kind of sort of my maid too - she does an hour to an hour and a half worth of cleaning because I keep weird hours and feel I am doing pretty good if I can keep up with feeding myself, kids, cats, doing the laundry, dishes and keeping the plants alive - so I have the maid to the vacuuming and other not so fun tasks. Anyway, the maid/friend left, my belly was content with the Italian stir fry creamy pesto thing I had made and the salad (I may actually like kale now....I'm not sure), and happy because my friend didn't charge me and said that that was her birthday gift to me - and I am drifting off about to enjoy my nap, when BOOM BOOM BOOM happens. I open the door, and it is the woman and her fat chihuahua holding a cake. Well, the woman was holding the cake, not the chihuahua.
She explained that it was a Black Russian cake and that she had extra batter after making cakes for her clients, and seeing my car there, she figured (correctly so) that I had taken the day off. I vaguely recall, months prior, mentioning to her a kahlua cake that my mom used to make. Maybe that gave her the idea, I dunno. For whatever reason, she showed up at my door with a cake. She appeared pleased that it happened to be my birthday.
I thanked her and watched as she went back to her place, the fat chihuahua scamperwaddling alongside her. I was left amazed at the creative way that God wished me a "Happy Birthday."
