Popcorn is for sure not healthy. Pretty much no matter how you prepare it. Though I still love it on the occasion.
Can you expand on this for me? Maybe post some sources?

My understanding has been that popcorn is bad due to how tainted corn crops are from modern agricultural practices, and that other methods of preparation just add fuel to the fire (such as carcinogens found in the bags used in microwave popcorn).

Anyways, any info you could share would be appreciated!

(And nope, call me weird, but I don't really believe butter, as long as it's a good quality butter, is evil.)
Hey weird (you asked :p), what constitutes as good quality butter?

Do not be misled: “Bad company corrupts good character.” :p

The joy of the Lord is our strength. So......

I know you weren't referring the question to me, but these are my thoughts....

I don't know all about the tainted corn crops, since I haven't done any research on that. But, to me, it's about the method of how you make popcorn. Typically, when you're cooking stove top, you're using oil. Regardless of how healthy the oil is (I use coconut oil and avocado oil), it still isn't "healthy" for you. Also, people typically put salt on their popcorn which can be unhealthy in large amounts. People also tend to put loads of butter on it, which is also unhealthy.

With microwavable popcorn, it's already processed...so there's additives in there that make it unhealthy.

They apparently have organic popcorn at a local health food store here, which I thought was interesting.

All natural ingredients makes popcorn healthier. But, you're still going to use oil among other things (but that's just me. I like my popcorn to have flavor so I'm going to add things to make it flavorable). And just because the bag says organic doesn't always mean it is. When I go grocery shopping, I always look at the ingredients to make sure it's actually organic or natural. I mean, I"m not the kind of person that wouldn't eat something that's not natural, because I still do. But I at least try to consume the least processed things on the shelves :p

Well, genetic modifications for sure ruin 95% of it. Most (though not all) corn you see on the shelves, unless certified organic or says otherwise, is genetically modified. I do not support genetically modified organisms for a few reasons. One of them being that man thinks they're so superior that they can make food better than God can is bound to backfire. Though there's more specific reasons behind it than just that. Though I'll have to type those out later...

Thanks Evie (and shiney). :)

This subject probably deserves a whole thread of its own - as if we don't talk about food enough already.

I air-pop popcorn. No shame. Then I put olive oil and salt on it. It sounds a bit hippy, but it tastes great.

If it has the USDA organic label, it's official. As far as oils go, coconut oil is the best kind.

Red Palm doesn't do too bad for itself, either. I actually recently bought an organic (non-hydrogenated) shortening that uses coconut and red palm oil. I want to try it with some organic popcorn kernels. But I forgot to get them when I went grocery shopping.

#FutureNutritionalScienceMajor (In other words, I have no credentials, but I want them. SO I plan on going to college for them when I gather some finances)
That's awesome! Yeah I took a health psych class and learned about all this. Applying for grad school for January now, and if I get in, I'll be getting my Master's in health and wellness.
