When I go grocery shopping I bring an ordered list of what I want to buy. If something catches my eye, I may buy it. But I'm not someone who shops for the fun of it (shopping's not fun!)

Always in my grocery trolley:
Meat
Fruit
Veggies
Bread
Eggs
Milk products - milk, cheese, sometimes yoghurt/ice cream

Never in my grocery trolley:
Herbs like coriander (cilantro) and rocket - they taste horrible and make me feel ill
Salmon
Frozen meals
Spam
Bokchoy, or any Chinese cabbage variant

Aw, man... Salmon with cilantro lemon butter, grilled on the back patio is like... a dream come true. Maybe you were mistaken in your choices for what not to put in your trolley. Salmon is brain food you know. Healthy healthy healthy...

Also - I should have added quinoa as my new favorite in-the-cart item. Mmmmm, protein!

Grace, the smell of salmon makes me feel nauseous, the taste of it even more so. I'm not the biggest fish-eater to begin with, but salmon just rocks my stomach (and not in the good way!)

Pipp, what on earth is 'hamburger helper'? It sounds terrible!

Always buy:
Milk - because protein supplements are terrible mixed with anything else, and chocolate syrup doesn't work with water.
Motor Trend, Car and Driver, Automobile- because Motor Trend, Car and Driver, and Automobile.
Meat - because carnivarian diet
Sriracha - goes with everything
Kipper snacks - the bacon of fish
Eggs - pre-bird, or chicken seeds, are yummy and versatile. Breakfast - it's what's for dinner!
Something high in fiber (varies from week to week) - because protein supplements, milk, eggs, and meat

Never buy:
Canned peas - WHY ON EARTH WOULD YOU OH NEVERMIND
Brussel sprouts - just don't like 'em
Bologna - there are an infinite number of superior processed meat byproducts out there...why on earth would you choose bologna when you can choose chorizo or hard salami?
Tequila - people keep trying to convince me that there are tequilas that taste good, and they are always wrong
Plain milk chocolate - dark chocolate, VERY dark chocolate, is superior...but there are worse things in life than a plain Hershey bar I suppose. (Symphony with almonds and toffee chips FTW!)
Olives - ew ew ew (applies to all varieties - my hatred sees no racial boundaries)
White bread - I just like unwhite bread better, if I have a choice

Meh.

I'm with you Tintin but for a different reason. It's red color, even after cooking, looks like it's bloody. In red meat, yes, in white meat like chicken, NO!

Always in my trolley...er....cart:

romaine lettuce - good for salads or sandwiches
avocado - they are just yummy - good with breakfast, in aforementioned salad, smushed up as a sandwich spread (since I abhor mayonnaise).
red wine - usually a shiraz, cabernet, or a blend
cheese - swiss, a sharp cheddar, or pepper jack
veggies of some sort
frozen ravioli - so the kids can cook something if I can't make dinner for them that night
eggs
chicken

Things that are never in my cart:

eggplant
sugary cereals
black olives - I like the green ones, though
sodas, with one exception (see below) - I'm just not a cola person. I'll do the occasional root beer when out, but, meh...I figure if I want the carbonations, that's what beer is for.

When I want to treat myself:
lamb - if I am willing to spend more $$
plain Greek style yogurt - don't get the honey kind. Pour the honey on yourself. Best. Dessert. Evah!!!
ice cream

As for my shopping habits - they are kind of weird and go something like this:
Off to get salmon and a few other things. In the fish section, I see that sole is on sale, so I opt for that instead of the salmon. Stuffed sole sounds good. I think I can snag a loaf of sourdough at work, since we're a non-profit and end up with some of that stuff - that would be better than buying Stove Top. Don't forget chocolate. I then go back to produce to get carrots and celery for the stuffing. While there, I see that the broccoli doesn't look that good, so I will get it frozen when I get to that aisle. I grab a head of cabbage before leaving produce. I promised my youngest I'd make her favorite chicken and broccoli casserole, so I get chicken thighs, since they are cheaper and more forgiving if you overcook them. If I get the big package, I could bake the extras in my curry seasonings or Italian herbs and that would be good for my lunches. I could make the chicken dish first, reserve the drippings and use it in the stuffing, but am I going to make the fish dish first? hmmmm......never mind, I have chicken bouillon cubes, so I could go either way with that. There's the ground beef to go with the cabbage....I could freeze the beef and the cabbage will last long in the fridge, so it doesn't matter when I make that....

I think my method would drive most people crazy, but it works for me.
:)

oops! I was going to mention that although I don't like colas, I buy ginger ale on occasion. I drink one about every two weeks or so. Not a soda junkie.

Had to add this, since I said "see below" regarding the soda thing....then didn't have anything "below."

I'm up too late on here....

Tintin, that's so cute you call it a trolley. :p

Boxed macaroni and cheese isn't bad, and the cheese powder tastes good, but when I really think about it, powdered cheese just...doesn't sound right. Homemade macaroni and cheese is SO much more delicious.

I remember when I lived by myself and didn't have a whole bunch of income, I bought Hamburger Helper, the potato one, once. It made me feel kinda sick, and I had leftovers but I couldn't bring myself to eat them.
