I was looking up peerages because of the whole nobility ranking system

In the US, of course, the wife of the President is always referred to as the First Lady

You are REALLY hung up on aristocracy...

In the US the aristocracy has, as Mark Twain once said, died down to only dudes and dudesses.

That is a good question Double S. What makes a woman a lady? Actually took me a couple days to gather my thoughts and figure what single thing would be what makes her a lady. I concluded it is her mouth. We all already know the importance of the tongue and getting a bridle on it.

However, as I contemplated gals I did not find lady like the running theme for me was it was something they said. Such as used vulgarity or just crude language, just saying inappropriate things.

Where the gals I found lady like the running theme seemed to be the way they just knew how to speak appropriate for whatever was said and in every situation. Well at least in public they may have went home kicked the couch, fired up the computer and unloaded in a tweet......LOL I am clowning of course, but to me it just seemed that the tongue seemed to be what I found is what makes me say if a gal is lady like or not.

Aye. And the lines around the mouth tell you a lot too - whether she smiles kindly a lot, or smiles derisively, or sneers...

Class and having respect for your self and others are some qualities of being a Lady.

You know how school puts you in to classes.... I wondered if that was ever related to how rich you were, rather than how smart you are.

Though 'high class' people are thought to be smarter I suppose listening to an opera takes more brain cells than listening to drum and bass? What about 'middle of the road' music. Music for the middle classes? Is this why so much of christian music is that bland 'adult contemporary' style?

Well, I hope to teach my little girl that a Lady is someone who is meek not weak.
That although there are challenges in this life made specifically for women, to overcome them with the strength of Jesus.
That love, wisdom and prayer are what makes a woman a woman.
That being humble is God's joy.
That it's more life giving to suffer on Jesus' path.
All this world will offer is short term pleasant emptiness.
It's better to walk with Jesus and go after the crown of life.

This question has got me though.

Because I thought I knew how a lady ought to be. I thought I knew it like the back of my hand, but I don't.

1 Timothy, 1 Corinthians, Ephesians all have lessons for a wife. I'd imagine an unmarried lady would be one who reads and lives out the lessons of the bible, even when not married.

It's funny, because we are all bride of Christ.
We are meant to be "like a lady" in that we all submit to our Lord.

Wow...
Kinda floored here. I would have thought that by three pages it would have been nailed at this time. But I'm wrong.

The most defining characteristic of an American "Lady" is self control.
Self control in word and attitude and lastly as a result of the previous, self control over her actions. There's a couple of them running around on the forum...and mostly they don't know it because as has been stated...it isn't exactly taught just commanded. Of course a lady is moral and not the "party girl" (Rolling eyes here)

The proverbs 31 woman is the bride of Christ...any single human woman would have died from exhaustion trying to do all of that.

Now what differentiates those ladies who practice all that self control is their kindness, grace, mercy, charity, and etc. I've talked before about community involvement. But a Lady knows that she lives within a community and does what she can to support her community through various groups as she has time but her family obviously comes first.

I think Paul mentioned this...not gossips or slanderers. You know how he was mobbed by women... even Lydia had the hots for him. But some women have bad habits of elevating themselves by degrading others...and a lot of guys fall for it too. Its Just unladylike behavior.

I know that Hollywood and society in general would like for you to believe that a lady is trim and beautiful...bah! Not hardly...they come in all shapes and sizes. They can't necessarily cook or knit or sew. They might have a professional career of some sort. They aren't perfect by any means but are quite capable of admitting when they are wrong...but of course because of their self controlled attitudes they are easy to forgive and let it go.

But yes...the most defining characteristic of what makes a lady is her self control. Not submissiveness or ability to be a doormat or Barbie Doll appearance...just self control.

sorry just trying to broaden peoples perspective, sometimes its tiring to restrict oneself to one country and assume that nobody else lives anywhere else.

I think it does revolve around American chic's. The song is I wish they all could be California girls. So unless ya wanna argue with the Beach Boys it is about them American gals ;);)

LOL...........That is like the number one reply in life I hear back when I drop knowledge............whatever..............LOL

California, nationality, beach or not, who cares. For me the important thing is to stop losing arguments with women.
So I am looking for someone who is deaf mute. That way I never have to hear whatever back as a reply and never lose another argument.

How about a woman who reads lips and types back all her answers? 😁

I'm not deaf mute but I have indeed been known to write replies rather than speaking them. 🖋️📖📝

Why you have to make this difficult. I am clearly a simple person looking for simple solutions but no you have to bring up something I did not even consider like my lips can be read........LOL
