Julliana had an interesting thread about what women do to prepare for a date. I thought I would go one step further (without getting too personal) and ask ...

What's in your Every Day Carry (EDC) -- OK, call it a purse or pocketbook or clutch or handbag ... What DO you call it???

Are you a light traveller, do you prepared for any and every situation?

Women tend to carry a great deal more with them than men on a regular basis. The fact that a popular women's get-together game is to see who has the most of 20 items on a list in her purse says a lot about the eclectic nature of the contents of most women’s purse.

Men and women have some of the same items that they carry in common with each other. For example, most carry a wallet (or some version of a wallet and the usual contents like driver’s license, credit cards, money, etc.), cell phone and keys. In addition to these items, the majority of women also carry a highlighter and/or pen, gum and lip gloss or lipstick with them.

Beyond these items, women not only carry vastly more than men carry, but what women carry varies a great deal from one woman to the next. A woman’s purse/handbag, it seems, is more than just a carryall for necessary items. It serves as a one-stop destination, kind of like the mall. A woman’s purse, in addition to being a convenient way to carry the bare essentials, also serves as a:

1.) Coffee Shop. One woman claims to carry the makings for coffee along with the creamer and sweetener necessary for her to enjoy her coffee. She did not say if she carried a cup to hold her coffee too.

2.) Medicine Cabinet. From a variety of painkillers (Motrin being the most popular) to Kleenex to contact supplies to antibiotic ointment, many women carry the “just-in-case” items often found in a medicine cabinet. Interestingly, the items considered essential and worth always carrying is not the same for every woman.

3.) Convenience Store. Everyone has stopped at a convenience store while traveling and grabbed something to drink, a snack and perhaps a magazine. Some women have decided that carrying these items with them is more convenient. (It’s definitely cheaper than buying them at most convenience stores.)

4.) Beauty shop. As already mentioned, the large majority of women carry lip gloss or lipstick with them at all times. In fact, many usually have more than one color with them. In addition, women also carry a variety of other beauty oriented items such as a nail clipper or file, mascara, lotion, floss and a brush or comb.

5.) General Store. When children are babies, a diaper bag serves to carry many items that might be needed. When children grow out of diapers, some of those items make their way into mom’s purse. For example, some women regularly carry a change of underwear for their little one, wipes of some sort and toys to occupy the kids. Many women also carry items such as a book, reading glasses, sunglasses and a hand-held fan. And not to leave out the men, some women carry items that their husbands might need but don’t want to carry. In fact, one woman said she always has a pair of reading glasses for her husband. Note that the men did not admit to carrying those with them regularly. Another woman said that her husband wants her to carry a “mom purse” (meaning, a large purse or bag), so she can have more items with her that he thinks she should always have.

Women carry an amazing amount of items with them regularly, and the variety of those items is certainly intriguing. Even with the large number of items listed above, there are quite a few items not yet mentioned. (Some of those items include larger electronics (iPad for example), inhaler, jewelry, note pads, business cards, etc.) The large variety of items that women carry in their handbags/purses seems rivaled only by the large variety of different sizes, shapes and colors of handbags/purses available. This carryall has gone well beyond being just a convenient storage place for the bare necessities. No wonder there’s a game related to revealing what’s in a woman’s purse.

Everyday carry (EDC) or Every Day Carry refers to a small collection of tools, equipment and supplies that are carried on a daily basis to assist in tackling situations ranging from the mundane to the disastrous. The term EDC also refers to the philosophy or spirit of 'preparedness' that goes along with the selection and carrying of these items. Implicit in the term is the sense that an EDC is an individual's personal selection of equipment, arrived at after deliberation, rather than a standardized kit.

EDC items normally fit in a pocket, or small pack, or be attached to clothing. Emphasis is placed on the usefulness, accessibility and reliability of these items. As an example, the core elements of a typical EDC might include a folding pocket knife, a flashlight, a cell phone/smart Phone, and a multi-tool. These items are often carried in pockets or collected into a pack or organizer.

My purse:

small wallet
cellphone
keys
sunglasses
widetooth comb
small bottle of hand lotion
nailclippers
lipgloss
gum or mints usually
asthma inhaler
sometimes my gun (if I'm wearing a dress)

That's pretty much it as a rule. I don't like a bunch of stuff in my purse and I only buy organizer purses so I can just reach in and grap what I need without digging around for 10 minutes. :)

I just recently started carrying a purse and that's because sometimes I get tired of my pockets bulging from all the stuff I have in it.

So far I have this in it:

1. Miscellaneous items that don't really count. And the miscellaneous item that doesn't count is a pen lol

2. Wallet

3. Keys (and I have exactly one key. And that's my house key. I don't drive, I don't have much use for any other key besides a house key. Even then I usually don't take that out with me lol)

4. When I buy some, gum.

5. If I'm gonna carry a purse, I might as well put my phone in it. :p

No kidding, I've got so many keys because of work that I don't carry them....they just stay in the truck. The only keys I carry on a ring is my house key and truck key.

PS....I don't carry them in a purse. :D

The Wikipedia article has a list of commonly carried items or items to consider. Among those mentioned here was the Pepper Spray (or similar). In addition, a mini-flashlight and a whistle are often suggested for a woman. Of course this all depends on what you are preparing for, what is reasonable in your situation, and of course a broad situational awareness. I am glad that you ladies are at least thinking. There are many Youtube videos on what people have researched, tested, sized and costed that might also help. Again, it depends; are you planning on doing major surgery or will a band-aid, some ointment and a swiss army knife suffice? In addition to your personal carry, please be conscious of a car emergency kit, and a home emergency kit. Some women use an Altoids tin as a discrete / covert way to store "Urban Survival Stuff" in their purse (photo below). Best Wishes!

Below is the wiki list for your review:

List of common items

* A folding knife, multitool or Swiss Army Knife

* A wrist watch

* A Flashlight (may be on a key-chain, headlamp, and "tactical" flashlight which normally has a brighter output to blind and stun assailants.

* Whistle or Airhorn (Noise Makers)

* Cell phones, Smart Phones or other media devices like digital camera to record evidence. (Sometimes satellite phones if in remote areas)

* Sustainment items (e.g. Bottled water, High energy foods)

* Pen, pencil, or a tactical pen similar in concept to a kubotan for striking and stabbing.

* Medicine for common ailments and maladies that besets individuals like allergies and gastrointestinal problems or prescription medicine that has to be taken daily.

* First aid kit or trauma kit.

*
Rope or paracord

* Handkerchiefs or other utility cloth.

* Keys containing key chain and accessories like light, nail clipper, pill bottle, folding scissor, carabiner, kubotan or similar impact/piercing self-defense weapon.

* Gloves can be latex, nitrile, leather, or synthetic.

* Pepper Spray/OC spray or Stun Gun/Tazer

*
Pistol and Holster
