Hey Everyone,

I don't watch movies all that often, but I finally broke down and watched Inception, and I confess, it was mostly because of all the hype. I didn't even know what the movie was about when I picked it up, so after watching it, I was interested in discussing some of the main concepts I found intriguing (i.e., choosing reality vs. choosing a dream) with a few co-workers...

To my surprise, every guy I asked (different age ranges, social groups, etc.) had the same reaction of horror and disgust: "You mean the movie with that guy from Titanic? If I had a choice between watching one of his movies and sudden death, I'd choose death. Twice."

I was genuinely shocked by this. Now, I understand that the guy may be a little overexposed (I'm more of a Christian Bale fan myself, because of the diversity of the roles he plays), and I understand that there may be the feeling that Mr. DiCaprio may not be the best actor out there, but, I was just curious... how much of it is just plain old jealousy? Do guys see the high school jock who gets all the girls in Mr. DiCaprio, and feel some small triumph in shunning everything he does?

I was wondering if the ladies out there have the same reaction to similar "it girl" actresses: Megan Fox, Scarlett Johansson, etc. Do women protest extremely attractive females by banning their movies as well?

I know we all profess our Christian faith and talk about our higher standards of living because of our beliefs, but I'm always interested in what people say vs. what people do (myself included.) Growing up in Christian schools, Sunday school, vacation Bible school, church camps, etc., I always found it interesting how extremely attractive people were treated--either as idols, or else as objects of scorn and sometimes, very unfair rumors (i.e., some of the most popular girls being called slang promiscuous names by other girls and sometimes guys out of spite and not truth.)

What do you all think? And how do you react to really good-looking people? Or, are you one of the good-looking people, and how have others reacted to you?

And of course... there is also the original question presented by this thread--why is there so much disdain out there for poor old Leo? :)

Ha, here I thought I'd carefully read this over for mistakes, but I always miss something... such as the spelling in the main title of the thread!!! I meant, of course, to write "Leonardo" and not "Leonard."

If there is ever a thread about dislike for people who don't make spelling/grammar mistakes in their posts and threads, I can be thankful that I certainly have nothing to worry about!! :)

When I see someone who is really good looking I'll usually focus on their worst feature and exaggerate it in my mind. If it's not a physical feature I'll look for something else, like a moral failing. Then when someone is like "Did you see so and so?" I'll respond with "You mean the guy with an overbite?" or "That guy who smokes ten packs a day?"

But it has nothing to do with jealously. Mainly I'm just trying to see all of the person for who they really are. We often just focus on people's positive features and act like that's all their is. But I don't think that's very honoring to the person.

(And Leonardo DiCaprio is a big dummie.)

I find him extremely effeminate, which is counter intuitive as to how I was brought up, and what I believe a man should look or be like.

Men should be men IMO, and this new age of neutering men so that they seem more effeminate(while many women are more manly) bothers me a great deal. I feel that it seems to weaken the self identity of both sexes, and has caused more problems between men and women in their relationships than it has helped.

In the end however, I could care less what you look like. It's what is inside that matters, and the only time I take looks into consideration is when engaging in a relationship or dating. It may sound shallow, but if I'm going to live the rest of my life with someone, I should be attracted to them right?

:| I know it's off topic, but power of life and death in the tongue and all that, I know they're joking, but I think we ought to think carefully about what we say..........anywaaaaaaay, I would actually choose to watch a Leonardo Dicaprio movie rather then die..........I can just picture it in the future, ok Tim, it's watching 'the beach', or the electric chair......what, he chose the film, madness!?!?

Not really sure where Im going with this, but I actually like him as an actor now! However if I'd only seen Titanic I wouldn't think much of him........

I never understood why people watch/ don't watch movies because of an actor. Then again, I am very random when it comes to movies. I'll even watch romantic dramas (my worst fear) if ganged up on :p

Maybe they dislike him because some watch the movie only because he is in it?, rather than because the movie might be interesting in itself (which would be a somewhat bad reason for seeing a movie).

I haven't seen much that leonardo has done since Titianic, not because I hate him but simply because he hasn't been in much I was interested in seeing.

That being said I don't really like him and I have no idea why. Its just something about him that turns me off.

And just because I am christian doesn't mean I'm not human and fall prey to human thinking and emotion. we all of us want the hot girl, we all hate the hot guys for having the hot girl, and we all would more than likely chew off our own leg to get the hot girl. We would of course instantly regret such an action once we realized how shallow said girl probably is, but the point it we'd probably do it.

We are after all human and driven by things we most probably shouldn't be.

:D

Have fun ya'll

Greetings SoulSearch.

I can honestly say I never thought I'd see a thread here on CC regarding Leonardo DiCaprio - lol.

Having said that, although many (if not most) guys can't stand Leonardo Dicaprio, I personally enjoy his movies. I have not seen all of his movies, but the few I did see (The Aviator, Blood Diamond, Body of Lies, Shutter Island) I thoroughly enjoyed. I was especially impressed with his acting in Shutter Island (I think that is his best movie thus far, although I have yet to see "Inception").

When I watch one of DiCaprio's movies, I don't view them with the mindset of "Women love him, therefore I will hate him." By doing that, I would simply miss out on what I believe are good movies (and I am a big movie buff). The only two movies I saw of DiCaprio's that I did not necessarily enjoy were "Titanic" and "The Departed." But I dislike both movies not because of DiCaprio, but because of the movies themselves. For example, "The Departed" was overly excessive in swearing, and "Titanic" was obviously geared mainly toward women (but even in Titanic, Leonardo's character was the only part of the movie I did like).

I'll admit that for the longest time Leonardo had what is called a "boyish" look about him that the rest of us guys sometimes find irritating. But now that he is in his late thirties he has finally lost the 'pretty-boy' face (thankfully).

So I for one enjoy his movies and acting, and will probably be an even bigger fan of his after seeing "Inception" and his forthcoming movie "J. Edgar Hoover" where he plays the lead role as Hoover (I believe this movie will really exhibit his acting abilities).

I hope this helps.

Well, of all of the movies I've seen with Leo in them, there's only one I would recommend...and that would be What's Eating Gilbert Grape... Grape is redeemed due to being a quirky film, and also starring Johnny Depp and Juliette Lewis. Even all that is Tom Hanks could not save Catch Me If You Can from Leo.

Why? I have no idea. It has nothing to do with being extremely attractive, as I don't think Leo is. He's not really a good actor, but that's not it either...it's just that every time he appears on screen I just think...'Meh'. There's no presence there...nothing that keeps my interest.

Looks alone simply don't matter to me...there has to be something else there. Brad Pitt? Good looking, perhaps not the best actor, but in Snatch, okay, he got my attention. Matt Damon? Same. Scarlett Johannson? Ditto. Christian Bale? Good looking, decent actor...as long as he keeps his temper (grin). Megan Fox? Please. She's famous for looks alone. (She can't even begin to act, so her audition for Transformers 2 was to wash Michael Bay's Ferrari in a bikini while he watched...Ugh.)

Although I do agree with looking at a person realistically, I also don't think it's the best thing to criticize and highlight specific flaws, either--BUT, I am guilty of this as well, especially with "Super Spiritual People"--I think myself, "Hmm. Ok. He seems like he thinks a lot of his faith. I wonder if he goes home and downloads porn like 99.99% of the guys nowadays.."

I'm trying to work on this. If I see someone who is extremely good-looking, I can openly admit to being jealous. However, I'm trying to ask God to give me a much better attitude, and to always pray that the other person will be blessed and kept safe. After all, the Bible says we are to edify and lift up, not criticize and cut down, no matter what the reason. I agree that we have to be realistic, but also stay within the frame of God's love.

I completely agree with you that some of his movies are good... and some are... well, not so good. Just like any other actor...

This may be a personal fatal flaw of mine, but I happen to like the "boyish" look. Not necessarily "pretty boy", but I don't mind "boyish". People are very kind to me in telling me I often look younger than I am, and I would personally be uncomfortable dating a guy who looked like he could be my dad, even if he was only a few years older. It's just me, though. I guess that's why we all have our own likes and dislikes.

Hey Nuke, I'm with you as far as Gilbert Grape--he was so believable in that movie that it was hard to see him as being "normal" in other films after that... Kind of too bad that he doesn't show off that kind of talent more often.

A guy who isn't impressed with Megan Fox? Whoa. Maybe I should revise a few of my prayers at night asking to look like her... (I am just kidding in this instance, but when I was younger especially, I really did used to pray that I would look like someone else.)

I'm not a guy, but I'm not a DiCaprio fan either. To me it doesn't seem like he truly owns a role and, if I'm being honest, I can't take him seriously in some roles because he does seem like a big ole girl. Most movies he's in simply don't hold my interest for long. I tried watching Inception, but zzzzzzzzzz*snort*zzzzzzzz

I don't like/dislike an actor/actress due to looks (except maybe George Clooney, even if he is an old guy *swoon*). It's more this: Does his/her personality come through? Is it the same character I've seen him/her do in the last 4 movies? Are they just posing for the camera or are they really trying to get me to feel something? Anyone who can make me laugh is aces, no matter what they look like.

I am not a DiCaprio fan because I do not enjoy his acting his appearance has little to do with it. Robin Williams is ugly and I love his movies!

I personally don't like boyish looking guys or feminine ones and I guess that's the reason most guys dislike him. I liked him in Blood Diamond though, had a more masculine role, but I'm a random movie watcher, don't really care who is acting.

Guys will tend to dislike most guys any women like just because it's our competitive nature. I think men and women both do it though.

I love Robin Williams jokes. The best part of it is that he's probably made up half of them lol. He has a great sense of humor, something a lot of people playing in comedies ironically lack. (Ms. Doubtfire FTW!)

For me, it's not about what the actors looks like, but whether I'll enjoy the movie. Actors can be attractive but really awful at acting, and the movie is terrible. They can be really good actors and make the movie great. And vice versa. You could have really ugly actors, or even average, but they're amazing actors and the movie is entertaining. I could care less about their appearance.

Personally I don't have an issue with Leonardo D. however, whoever mentioned that he seemed somewhat feminine for a guy hit the nail on the head. Straight guys ussually don't like hanging around the feminine types unless we know for certain the guy isn't gay. The last thing a straight wants or needs is for some gay guy to develop a crush then go public with it. Things could get hard for straight guy with coworkers and friends who like to talk junk. Something like this isn't going to go away overnight.

Seoulsearch, this is by far the best thread.

I happen to like girly looking men, just not men who look girly and act like one. Im not a big fan of Leonardo Dicaprio, personally i dont find him attractive and if im gonna watch a movie for two plus hours i dont wanna be lookin at some ugly mug the whole time.

Now as to what you were saying about the women, scarlett johanson, megan fox. I dont mind watching their movies at all. I think women in general need to be careful what we watch though. Especially when they have women who look seemingly perfect. In my opinion thats why a lot of women protest their movies, probably because it makes them feel bad about themselves.
