Another thought. Its obvious that there's a big anti-Catholic sentiment throughout CC and I wondered whether it might be a better idea NOT to argue/debate people about things in the instances where they are clearly uneducated on the topics being debated, as they never take on board what we're saying and everyone involved just gets annoyed. If they really want to know about Catholicism they can research it themselves instead of us arguing until we're blue in the face. Now someone who is genuinely interested is a different story. What do you Catholic-folk think?

We still need to help correct the lies and falsehoods about the Church. Even if the people spreading these things are never converted in this life, there may be dozens more people reading those threads who might learn the truth about the Catholic Church and come to an even closer relationship with Our Lord through them.

Yeah well I have thought myself and it's definitely true that we should correct those things, but I was thinking more of the instances where it's pure ignorance for example two recent statements I've seen: "Catholic is Evil" and "Catholic is not Christian". And after those very blunt statements which weren't in anyway backed up, Catholics were trying to defend the faith. In those instances I saw it as being quite a waste of time. But yes, I'm definitely not saying we shouldn't debate and defend Catholicism! No way!

i think ds has a good point. We need to defend the faith in all instances. It makes sense to just lay off while they being ignorant and close-minded. But only to a certain extent. Because those types of ludicrous statements are how people are turned off to the Catholic Faith in the first place. I honestly dont expect to convert the people that make these threads. We need to defend our Faith for the good of the people who are reading and blindly accepting the lies.

Personally it can often feel like warring to me to but yes I've pretty much just taken my faith and religion for granted and after spending some time here I've decided I need and should buy a few Apologetic books on the faith. Will be a good exercise to just educate myself on the origins and traditions of the faith and assure myself of the biblical soundness of it.

They do it because its fun for them. To me they are no better than a bully that calls you names and laughs at you because it gives them a sense of superiority. I am starting to change my attitude towards them. They usually make my stomach turn and get me upset when I read the things they say about us and our church but now I realize that they are missing out on a lot of things that we enjoy as catholics and in that sense I feel bad or them.

Yeah agreed there. That may actually be part of my annoyance towards them, the fact that I want them to understand what I believe and feel as a Catholic and I also want them to have that, but they just want to give us abuse. So we should be thankful that we're in this beautiful church instead of getting angry! :D I'm still not decided on whether to rebuke every wee thing that is said in ignorance towards us or only to engage in serious debates...Time will tell :p

So a local Franciscan Friar mission just gave me the ok to go on a private retreat with them! I gotta be there by 0500 tomorrow morning for prayer, mass, and breakfast! I even get my own cell to use while on retreat! :D the cool thing is last night I prayed to God to guide me in the direction he wants me to go, and I guess this retreat is in his master plan !!

Yes its sad. Keep this proverb in mind when dealing with them:

Fools have no interest in understanding; they only want to air their own opinions.

Stay away from fools, for you won't find knowledge on their lips.
