The Vatican does not condemn homosexuals. But it teaches that gay sex is "intrinsically disordered". Pope Benedict has barred sexually active gay men from studying for the priesthood.
See, it says pope Benedict barred SEXUALLY ACTIVE gay men from studying for the priesthood. SEXUALLY ACTIVE meaning involved in sexual activities. Pope Francis allows men with gay tendencies but he doesn't allow sexually active men. There was no contradiction between the two. The both of these great men fully understand human weakness but still know the capabilities of God Almighty to work in anyone. Amen. Praise The Lord for these great leaders among equals, called popes.

Firstly, no one can determine whether a priest just has "gay tendencies" or he is actually actively "involved" in gay activities. A priest with gay tendencies is a candidate for gay activities in the future. The congregation under him is in danger.

Now let's not be so conceited and try to differentiate between priests with "gay tendencies" and "sexually active" gay priests. Only those seeking to justify homosexuality would go to such an extent.

But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed. Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death.” (James 1:11-15)

Sin begins in the mind. A gay priest who is not actively involved in gay activities has a tendency towards the flesh rather than towards the Spirit. Ungodly desires give birth to sin. So a priest with "gay tendencies" is not the best candidate for service in the ministry because his "tendencies" may lead to sexual sin someday.

Also, it also seems very unlikely that having condemned homosexuality in scripture, God would choose an unrepentant gay priest for His service.

Now I am saying all the above holding to the opinion that being gay is a choice. Will someone prove to me that an individual could be born gay?

As Catholic historian and former Jesuit Peter de Rosa writes in the 'Vicars of Christ: The Darkside of the Papacy' (Crown Publishers, 1988), p. 427, "Popes had mistresses of fifteen years of age, were guilty of incest and sexual perversions of every sort, had innumerable children, were murdered in the very act of adultery [by jealous husbands who found them in bed with their wives]... In the old Catholic phrase, why be holier than the pope?"

Popes fought with one another, excommunicated one another, and sometimes even killed each other. It is difficult to find even a few among the popes after the fifth century who exhibited the basic Christian virtues until the modern era. Their lives as recorded in the Catholic Encyclopedia read like an unbelievable soap opera of lust, madness, mayhem, and murder. You should read one of the earlier copies sometime. Pay special attention to the preserved documents, and their recitation by many historians, revealing the depths of papal depravity.

So thank goodness for the reform popes that finally arose reforming much of the wild sinful worldly abuses amongst the clergy (though they obviously went too far with the inquisitions and such) right?

Read my previous post. I can respect what you say regarding the pope giving a human answer but the problem is that he's given it as pope from the papal office. If a lay person had made the comment, it wouldn't have bothered me. The reason it did is because the Catholic Church has a raging sexual immorality problem amongst its clergy.

So when you look at that problem and all of the people whose lives and spirituality has and is being damaged by sexually immoral priests as the context for the pope's statement: it's a really negative statement to make. Instead of taking the opportunity to lead reform of the problem, we see him making statements that open the door wider for more of it to occur.

There's nothing wrong with standing around admiring a painting but there is something wrong in standing around admiring a painting in a house that's on fire with people at risk in it. And what would you think of people who stand around encouraging the person admiring the painting rather than putting out the fire. That's you friend. You're that guy.

Did Jesus have three fingers pointing back at him whenever he pointed to a religious leader in judgment? What about Paul and the other apostles when they did it? Read through the New Testament. They all did it frequently and with good reason.

If salt has lost it's saltiness, what good is it. When a material number of Catholic religious leaders are engaging in gross sexual immorality, it makes no sense for the pope to make statements like this. Reform is needed and it's needed now.

The man is the first pope in centuries, or ever, to step up and say,"who am I to judge" this statement has rattled the catholic church, its the first time any pope has ever stated himself to be fallen human like the rest of us, and not try to stand in a position of superiority...The man washes peoples feet in the streets knowing he might get shot doin it, moved out of the pope palace into a apartment with the rest of the vatican community, and placed himself in a position of being no one special...It wasent a political statement, it was an honest reflection of the gospels as far as I can tell...If you took the entire non orthodox community (us), and consolidated it as one church, and drew the attention to it, that gets drawn to the Catholic church, I wonder how much dirty laundry we would find? ...I think they have the first good man in the drivers seat they have ever had. And Im sure not going to be judging him for that...PS, He wasent advocating child molestation in any way, or the acting out of any lustful desires which everyone has to battle...He said "If someone is gay, who searches for the Lord and has goodwill, who am I to judge?” Never heard that come out of the mouth of a Pope before...always remember about those 3 fingers pointing back at you as you point to someone in judgment...

I think some may have misinterpreted the pope. This question of homosexuality was one of many questions that he answered while he was on a plane. I dont think he was trying to "promote" the idea of homosexual priest being accepted in Catholic Church, he was just simply saying he cannot judge everyone. Everyone has tendencies that do not line up with Christ, does that disqualify us from serving God..no. We must keep these tendencies/habits/thoughts in check and ask God for forgiveness. I think there is a difference in having homosexual tendencies, and living an outright homosexual lifestyles without any shame or guilt. With that being said, I do think that they should allow priest to marry. There is nothing in scripture that says a man..priest or otherwise cannot marry. I think it would draw more heterosexual men to the priesthood. Those are my thoughts on the matter.

What business is it of mine to judge those outside the church? Are you not to judge those inside?
1Cor 5:12

I dont think he was trying to "promote" the idea of homosexual priest being accepted in Catholic Church, he was just simply saying he cannot judge everyone.

The Pope must be more responsible with every word he says if he believes that he represents Christ. A responsible person speaks clearly, and does not leave room for doubt. It is obvious that the Pope is not trying to promote homosexuality. However, he is brushing aside (or trivialising) an important issue that has plagued the Catholic church for long.

Everyone has tendencies that do not line up with Christ, does that disqualify us from serving God..no. We must keep these tendencies/habits/thoughts in check and ask God for forgiveness.
The word is "repentance." One must repent of sin. This includes leaving the path of sin; turning to God and adhering to His commands and proving repentance by deeds. (Acts 26:20). One must repent of Homosexuality.

I think there is a difference in having homosexual tendencies, and living an outright homosexual lifestyles without any shame or guilt.
Can you distinguish one type of person from the other? Remember, homosexuality is a secret sin. Not everyone is open and loud about what they do in private, and this is especially true about homosexuals.

Which verse in which gospel?

You bet, there are truck loads of dirty laundry. However, no one is defending or trivialising sin. When the Pope said, "If someone is gay," he meant actively gay. Isn't that obvious?

I think they have the first good man in the drivers seat they have ever had.
Isn't that kind of sad?

...always remember about those 3 fingers pointing back at you as you point to someone in judgment..

We need to study what Paul is saying here.

Great post. And remember the pope made the statement to a reporter after the reporter asked about the “gay lobby" of homosexual priests in the Vatican who may have exposed the church to blackmail.

What do you think these homosexual priests are doing at homosexual dating forums devoted to helping them find homosexual lovers to date around the world? This one is alleged to be based in the Vatican City: +VENERABILIS+ [ Official ]

Italian newspapers are publishing articles alleging numerous homosexual priests are now active with the Italian newspaper La Republica stating there is an ‘inappropriate influence’ by gay priests in internal Holy See affairs.

The internal report was commissioned after the so-called ‘Vatileaks scandal’ by the former pope himself, which ended with the arrest and conviction of the Pope’s butler Paolo Gabriele last year. He was found guilty of having stolen confidential documents from the papal apartment.

Vaticano/ Lobby gay, le bastonate di Venerabilis: manovra per affondare la Curia. In Liguria il 5% dei preti è omosessuale - Affaritaliani.it

The Catholic Church is at a crossroads with respect to allowing rampant homosexuality in the priesthood. Will they sanction it, ignore it, or reform it in line with God's Word on standards of holiness for church leaders?

The latter doesn't even appear to be on the table.

The pope is just trying to make the catholics accept that most of their priests are homosexuals, so he won't have to deal with all the scandals anymore. Next thing he'll probably say pedophilia is alright, just to stop the outrage over all the child abuse in the RCC. This pope is truly a wolf in sheep's clothing.

The papacy has always been a wolf in sheep's clothing. Just look at history.

Your first line nails it. The context in which the Pope made the statement puts an end to all arguments.

If they sanction it, then governments around the world will feel empowered to start passing legislation against Christian churches and organizations that stay true to God's Word prodding them to fall in line with the emerging one world religion. China has already begun persecution of Christians to get them all in line with their state controlled church. This would get the ball rolling in the West toward that goal. There are many amoral and immoral lost people that adhere to religious relativism/atheism that want this to happen. Many.

They've had some really bad popes. I always think of Pope John XII when this discussion comes up.

But this isn't an anti-Catholic thread nor am I against Catholics. The truth is I love them and have some as friends. There are an enormous number of moral genuine Catholics, including priests, throughout history who came to God through Christ as members of the Catholic Church per John 14:6.

I realize the opposite is also true, of course. That many missed out on the kingdom for relying on a church to save them rather than God Himself. Not to diminish the vast theological differences, but us Protestants certainly have that problem as well.

This is about a really serious problem in the Catholic Church from the top down/bottom up that's getting worse over time and whether or not Catholic leaders are going to reform it or not reform it. A lot weighs in the balance for the world and there are people posting in this thread that are completely oblivious to that fact. You are not among them.

The real reason behind Pope Benedict's resignation hasn't been made public, has it?

The latter doesn't even appear to be on the table.
It's clear that the Bible has been kept out of the picture.

Whenever church and state has united, there has been spiritual disaster. You're right, all these things are pointing towards to end-time events prophesied in the Bible.

Everything you just stated above about sin and thoughts and ministry,I mean EVERYTHING, can be said about a heterosexual. Why are you targeting gays? The same could be said about pastors with violent tendencies. He is a candidate for violent activities later or promoting violence later. Or a pastor with ANY sort of tendencies that COULD result in ANY sort of sin, by your logic above, should refrain from preaching. That only leaves the perfect people to preach the Word of God. Brother, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but you've left absolutely no one to spread the Good News round the world. Gays are human too, brother, and unless we can see Christ in every human and learn to love them, then I think we're in trouble. God bless.

As I have mentioned somewhere above, everyone has had to repent of some (or many) things. Also, as I mentioned above, it is OK for someone who has repented of homosexuality to serve in the ministry. I have never singled gays out. God has never called perfect people to leadership, because there are none. That's why we need his grace and forgiveness daily. However, here's the point: We have to look at sin the way God looks at it (Mt 5:29-30). We did not see that kind of indignation in the words of the Pope. If he represents Jesus, he must not be so evasive and diplomatic. Jesus was straightforward when it came to dealing with sin in the temple.

A simple and honest assurance by the Pope that he is aware of the problems plaguing the Catholic church and that he is working towards a more godly church, would be enough.

I share the same love for my Catholic brethren. In India, the Catholic church has done a phenomenal job in terms of education and charity. I personally know of some catholic priests who have portrayed Christ by their lives and examples.

I personally have been brought up as a Catholic. I have had many discussions with my "parish" priests. That's why I know the challenges the Catholic church is facing. I also know the unnecessary struggles priests face as a result of their being celibate. All said and done, we cannot give glory to God by watering down or overriding his Word. If we want to give him glory, we must do it His way- not the world's way.
