Why do some Christians still have male babies circumcised when New Testament scripture says it is of no value? Here in the United States circumcision is widely practiced among Catholic and Protestant Christians. Some claim it is needed for health, but I think uncircumcised men will disagree with that. Is it done for cosmetic reasons?

[h=3]Galatians 5:1-11[/h]New American Standard Bible (NASB)

[h=3]Walk by the Spirit[/h]5 It was for freedom that Christ set us free; therefore keep standing firm and do not be subject again to a yoke of slavery.
2 Behold I, Paul, say to you that if you receive circumcision, Christ will be of no benefit to you.3 And I testify again to every man who receives circumcision, that he is under obligation to keep the whole Law. 4 You have been severed from Christ, you who are seeking to be justified by law; you have fallen from grace. 5 For we [c]through the Spirit, by faith, are waiting for the hope of righteousness. 6 For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision means anything, but faith working through love.

7 You were running well; who hindered you from obeying the truth? 8 This persuasion did not come from Him who calls you. 9 A little leaven leavens the whole lump of dough. 10 I have confidence in you in the Lord that you will adopt no other view; but the one who is disturbing you will bear his judgment, whoever he is. 11 But I, brethren, if I still preach circumcision, why am I still persecuted? Then the stumbling block of the cross has been abolished.

sometimes it takes a while to transition from law to grace and from religion to relationship.

It's been almost 2000 years and we are still doing circumsions on white babies at a rate of 90% here in the US. That seems stupid to me. It is senseless mutilation and trauma for a baby.

When you do not study the entire bible, it is hard to understand all God says in His word. You also need an understanding of what the world was like that Paul was addressing. All the letters to the various churches were reporting God's words, and they report truths, but we can understand those truths better by knowing what brought about the need to write.

God in one scripture said to be circumcised, God wouldn't tell in another it is wrong to be circumcised.

The problem that was being addressed was that the Jews, who were the majority of the Christians at the time, thought that becoming a Christian meant gentiles must adopt the lifestyle Jews had been taught. The gentiles, to a man, had lived a lifestyle developed around pagan worship. When the Jews taught that it was about eating and holidays instead of the things we learn about from Paul, God said to tell the gentiles that wasn't at all what it was about.

Circumcision was about taking off some flesh as a reminder and sign that they would remove sin from their lives and put on obedience. In the beginning circumcision was done without knowing why. After Christ and after we received the HS we were told why, and that it wasn't the removal of skin that was important, but what it signified. We could be circumcised without the removal of skin, it wasn't the skin that was important but the heart.

It is just as wrong to say that you must not circumcise as a reminder as it is to say that the taking of skin is all that is required. What is important in our being circumcised in the heart.

They don't even give babies a simple pain killer. They just strap the boy down and start cutting away. I watched my son react to the pain. I don't ever want to watch that again.

Circumcision among society is about health. Just a while ago one of my family members got circumcised because of heath benefits and the boy was raised under a Muslim father. But he himself I think isn't religious. I don't understand why this is a problem, if it is for the body than for law keeping...Lol

Man this is awkward to answer in a way that isnt too graphic or offensive, but lts just say im happy to be circumcised and uncircumcised ones are ugly. Not that i look on a regular basis, but I was on the football team in HS. When 50 guys are in a communal shower and locker room you see things.

For many people its for hygiene. While it may have been more necessary in history, it still makes things less complicated when cleaning a boy. Besides, my mother had a bf who had to go in for a circumcision when he was in his 40's because something went wrong.

When we say that a male has to be circumcised for health reasons, are we saying that God made a mistake by designing the foreskin?
Now, I understand that there has been a problem with a few males, but why should most males in the U.S. be circumcised? It's like saying that since some have suffered from tonsillitis, everyone must have their tonsils removed. (I know that this is not the best example)

They're have been studies that suggest that something similar to PTSD occurs in a child after the surgery, many surgeries don't use painkillers, and those that do don't use enough.

Great video on the subject

Well friend that's not what we are saying, actually the opposite. If God used circumcision back then with the Jewish nation, it must mean something other than a sign of Abraham and his children. Like eating pork, even though pigs were created, God told us not to eat it, most likely for health reasons if you look at it with the same perspective.

I don't think there is one Christian that believes salvation comes through the phyical act of circumcision. Circumcision (to my knowledge) is done at birth, as opposed to 8 days after birth, and circumcision is done for health reasons. It has nothing to do with spiritual salvation. Seriously, I think there's far bigger issues to be worried about both in the Church and in society.

A circumcised penis is more practical... Uncircumcised ones are disgusting, they collect more bacteria and everything because of the foreskin being there. You also have to worry about pulling it back to pee, to wash it, etc. Gross...

In my overall opinion I don't think God cares whether you're circumcised or not, but i'm glad i'm circumcised. I don't know how old he is, but your son probably will be glad too.

Finally! A thread where I get to discuss the intimate details of my penis!!!!

I got cut when I was baby. Health reasons were given as a concern. I honestly don't get worked up or mad about it. I border on not caring. Trust me...it still works!

I'm thinking any future boys I have will be uncut.

Hmmm. I'd have to say that if circumcision caused PTSD then many more people would have it. Babies in car accidents, house fires, and other traumatic events would also have it but I don't see evidence of that. Certainly they're affected but they're usually not traumatized for life when raised in an otherwise healthy environment.
