I was cleaning out my closet earlier and found something. The ugliest dress I have ever seen.
When you haven't been married for very long and you have a small child, money can be a little tight, so the few things you can buy for one another are usually pretty special to you. Many Christmases ago, I opened a gift from my late husband. It was the UGLIEST dress I have ever seen. It was made out of something that looked like salmon chenille. Like someone made it out of your gramma's old bedspread. I smiled and said I couldn't wait to wear it.
His face was beaming. He was so proud of himself. He explained that he'd found one of those women's dress catalogs in the bathroom and had found a page I had turned down. He went through my closet so he would know the right size and ordered it for me, worried that it would not arrive in time for Christmas. I smiled and told him how very sweet it was for him to do all of that, but was still very confused.
Later on I went into the bathroom and found the catalog he was talking about. The dress I had been looking at was on the other side of the page from the ugly dress. I laughed and laughed, but never told him. To this day I still think it was the sweetest thing.
I wore my ugly dress proudly and have often wondered if he ever looked at me in it and wondered why in the world I would have wanted such an ugly dress. If he did, he never asked.
It is one of the most beautiful things I own.

So how about you? Have you ever had a gf/bf/spouse give you something or do something for you as a loving gesture, but it somehow backfired? Have you done something like this for someone else?
