I was cleaning out my closet earlier and found something. The ugliest dress I have ever seen. ;)

When you haven't been married for very long and you have a small child, money can be a little tight, so the few things you can buy for one another are usually pretty special to you. :) Many Christmases ago, I opened a gift from my late husband. It was the UGLIEST dress I have ever seen. It was made out of something that looked like salmon chenille. Like someone made it out of your gramma's old bedspread. :) I smiled and said I couldn't wait to wear it.

His face was beaming. He was so proud of himself. He explained that he'd found one of those women's dress catalogs in the bathroom and had found a page I had turned down. He went through my closet so he would know the right size and ordered it for me, worried that it would not arrive in time for Christmas. I smiled and told him how very sweet it was for him to do all of that, but was still very confused. :)

Later on I went into the bathroom and found the catalog he was talking about. The dress I had been looking at was on the other side of the page from the ugly dress. :) I laughed and laughed, but never told him. :) To this day I still think it was the sweetest thing.

I wore my ugly dress proudly and have often wondered if he ever looked at me in it and wondered why in the world I would have wanted such an ugly dress. :) If he did, he never asked. :)

It is one of the most beautiful things I own. :)

So how about you? Have you ever had a gf/bf/spouse give you something or do something for you as a loving gesture, but it somehow backfired? :)Have you done something like this for someone else?

Is it wrong that I kind of want to see a picture? xD

Nah, my guy doesn't trust himself to buy me wearable things because he knows how picky I am with clothes. (The last gift he bought me was an AUX-IN cable so I could listen to my mp3 player through my boombox speakers. What a great guy. ;))

On the other end, I'm not sure I could trust myself to clothes shop for someone else. Clothing taste is so fickle. :)

Everything about this is precious.

My mom gives my dad gifts that he hates all the time. But he always puts them to use because he knows she does it out of love. I always found it so sweet when he'd wear the ugly shirt she bought him to church. :p

Oh my goodness. I wish I had something meaningful to add but how could anyone possibly top that story? All I could talk about was the fact that my ex-husband ate anything I put in front of him... Crusty burned parts and all.

And yes, I'd love to see a picture of you wearing that dress!!

Oh! The stories I could tell you about how horrible my cooking was when we first married. :)

He told me that his mom would make him scrambled eggs with cheese in them, so I tried making them. He would always eat them and never complain. When I finally saw HER version, I realized what a runny mess mine were and couldn't believe he'd been eating mine so politely. She very kindly taught me how to make them. :)

I made the mistake of using self-rising flour when I made my first batch of pancakes using the flat side of the waffle iron. They tasted great, but looked like hockey pucks. :)

I'm from the South where making milk gravy is an art form. :) I stood a spoon up in my first batch and it stayed upright for four hours. :)

That's one of the most beautiful stories I'd ever heard.

It also shows that love can make something that no one would want into something precious and beautiful.

Thanks for sharing that, Dianna. :)

Jullianna - your story made a "sweet belly". When you go up over and down a hill fast enough to make your stomach tickle - my dad would call that a sweet belly. When you smelled something like licorice or an evergreen branch and it set you back in another time, or if you heard an old song that had you reliving a precious instant; all these are sweet bellies.

Your story made me think of the Gift of Magi. My grandmother's house when I was too little and when she read that story to me from a tiny book at Christmastime sitting in a chair while I fingered a marble that was a topper on a lampshade. That's a sweet belly.

That story was heartwarming. I'm glad I got to read it. Thank you whoever went and re-hashed this old thread.

How do you pronounce that?
Well it rhymes with the girl in this horrible singing duo. They are singing the worst song ever in the history of music ever conceived by man or animal ever and it's sung by the worst ever singing duo in the world - ever. And I understand the captain thing but I DO NOT understand the hat. The hat the most irritating thing ever worn ever.

I realize the hat wasn't there. The guy usually wears a captain's hat - like a gilligan/skipper type hat - and it's repugnant. I didn't watch the video before I posted it because I was eating, but I see that he isn't wearing the hat.

Now I wish I hadn't answered this at all. It's salmon shin-KNEEL. I am...so sick.

I'm sure I have, Jules, but now, even as when first reading your thread, I call forth any to bear hence. I enjoyed hearing yours, however. I hope to be the giver of such a moment and memory one day...

Why did the title of this thread immediately make me think of Ugly in a dress?
