I always minister online to atheists and non Christians and this question frequently pops up in the forums. I find it a very interesting topic and find I learn more from the bible by sifting through each supposed contradiction.

(for the record I personally don't think the bible has any contradictions)

But what I find shocking is that I hear some christians agree that the bible has contradictions. They say that the bible is man made and full of error, and that one has to look through the 'lens of the tradition' in order to understand the concept of the bible.

So my question is, do you believe the bible has contradictions or not and why?

If you believe the bible has contradictions how would you respond to an atheist or non christian who uses that as evidence that christianity is false?

Why would God allow a contradictory bible into our hands?

I saw a great post on here the other day that covers this nicely.

It said about a group of people going to a football game, and these people all sat in different seats around the arena. Everyone saw the same game and saw the same result however because of how everyone in the group saw it from different perspectives and vantage points they all might have very different accounts of the same game.

I'm not doing the post justice with how I wrote it but it made great sense to me.

Even As an atheist I think that argument is a very valid one. The bible is bound to have contradiction considering there was no collaboration between the authors.

If there was no contradiction or differing of opinion then they may as we'll had just one guy write it all rather than include various opinions and viewpoints.

All scripture is inspired by God (2 Tim 3:16). As such, there are no contradictions in the original scriptures. This said, all bibles are a translation of scriptures, and so may have apparent contradictions due to the translation process itself. I have also read (though I can't name any specific examples), of certain minor errors such as numbers not adding up between two books or something, due to copying errors in the manuscripts we have today.

Both these types of problems are not serious, and certainly don't change the meaning of any scripture.

An atheist cannot use contradiction in the bible as evidence against it. At best we can state different people had different viewpoints or absorbed the information differently.

If I pour water into a filter then the output purity of the water depends on the quality of the filter.

yes your right people look at it from different perspectives and of course it has contradictions .

It is very simple you have a memo sent out 47 people rewrite it as it goes on its way.

Communication what starts out does not end up the same. It is so different at the end.

An accident a group of people all there each see something different.

You will find that when a Christian reads the bible they only read the parts that they want to read. Something they do not agree with they only read that part then cut and paste it to condemn the person doing it.

They do not seem capable of putting the whole thing together. And those verses are not black and white to start with.

So what you read in on chapter contradicts further down.

I wanted to emphatically state NO!

But then I realized that would not be completely true.

The Holy Bible CONTRADICTS:

all earthly wisdom
all of Lucifer's plots and plans and schemes
all untruth
all who deny Jesus the Christ
(and so very much more.......)

In fact, if it were not referred to as the Book of Love, it could well be called the Book of Earthy Contradictions!

I have noticed that all agree there are no contradictions. I have spoken to some christians that agree there are some contradictions within the bible.
I'd just like to politely remind you guys that if someone does come in and express this as their view that we please don't "swarm" in on that person.

It will be found that the accuser is just parroting a well known unsubstantiated mantra. Any further inspection at best comes up with a scribal errir...big deal.

God even killed.

Or maybe my perception is wrong it just meant cant kill Christians sorry I stand corrected

It tells you the things you should not do despite allowing people to do them. Or do you think Adam and Eve managed to populate without family incest.

The commandment in the Hebrew does not say "thou shalt not kill." it says "thou shalt not do murder." That is a big difference.

God did not put the bible into our hands people did.

God has never ever as far as I know even been on this earth.

The whole thing is derived from a load of stuff that was written and given to people who could not even read and write.
It had to be read to them. Lets face it what was actually there and what was read could be two different things.
And also depending on the ability of the reader themselves.

Have you seen children do that? they not sure of something so they make it up so as not to look foolish in class.

What hootowl says has a point, which is why discernment is important when it comes to the Bible.

You can find historical evidence for everything that is in the Bible, which gives it the validation hootowl is trying to take away from it.

The Bible can seem contradictory in places, but the only times it seems to do this is when people have not fully studied it pick and choose passages to take out of context.
