How do you say Amen?

Like a Canadian or like you're at the doctor's getting your throat checked?

I say eh-men (ay-men).

Ah-men sounds more formal to me, for some reason. Not that that's bad, just an observation and how my brain (weirdly) works.

Before i opened this thread up, i just saw the title of it.

I thought you were asking how we felt about men. Are we like eehh... men or AAAAAAHHHH men!

I already had my answer in mind when i opened this up, it was going to be AAAAAAHHHHH men!!

Now that i know that is not what this thread is about... i don't know what to think!

I say both, but like the Ah-men pronunciation the best.

Ah-men.
Then again, the church I grew up in wasn't English speaking. I think every Romance-based language says Ah-men.

Ditto :)

It sounds prettier as ah-men when singing it. :) Long "e"s don't sound pleasant to the ear when a note is held for a long time either. :)

This is true, whenever I was in choir and we sang "Amen", it was always the "ah". It wasn't just a normal "ah", either, because in choir you have to really drop the jaw for that very rounded out sounding "ah". Man, I miss choir.

If it was sung "Ayyyyy-men" it would sound...a little less reverent. :p Maybe, though, that's why the ah-men version sounds more formal to me?

I had some kind of sensible answer all planned out... but then read NOD'S answer and my concentration was totally thrown off!!!!!

I need to ask God to help me focus.

AAHHHHHH-MEN.

I'm with Jullianna and Rachel. When I'm just simply praying, I say ay-men. But when I'm singing, I do "Ah-men." because it flows alot better.

Well, if you want to get objective and not subjective, the word comes from Hebrew, Greek, and later Latin origins. It means something to the effect of 'truth' or 'certainty', and is pronounced (phonetically) 'Ah-Main' .

"15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth." -KJV

(I'm not usually a big KJV guy, but other translations lose the word 'study' which I want to keep in this context.)
