To address the one point you did make - for the record, I use the NIV sparingly. I mostly used the Holman, ESV and NASB, as well as the original Greek for the NT, over the KJV, mostly because the manuscript tradition for those translations is better than the KJV. However, another reason is because the KJV is unnecessarily dense and I can spend more time being challenged by the word of God rather than the rendering of the language, and when I use Scripture to talk to non-Christians, it's better to use language they can understand, than language they have to jump through hoops to understand.
And again, I'll reiterate - The KJV uses more archaic language than Shakespeare. Most people do not read Shakespeare every day, and most people would not want to, so it is not comparable to the Bible. And finally, if you do not want to give Zondervan any money, then don't. No one is making you buy an NIV. They're just defending their reasons for getting or using one themselves.
