Galatians 2:14 – Should We Live as the Circumcision Party, Jews, or the Gentiles?
by Jon Sherman
Galatians 2:14 But when I saw that they were not straightforward about the truth of the gospel, I said to Cephas in the presence of all, "If you, being a Jew, live like the Gentiles and not like the Jews, how is it that you compel the Gentiles to live like Jews? Galatians 2:14 is often cited to suggest that Paul is teaching that believers should live like the Gentiles and not as Jews. This is done to support a faulty theological doctrine that creates a divide in the purpose, delivery, and design of God’s law. In such a scenario, the Jews obviously represent the Law of God, ...

Galatians 2:3-5 – Did Paul Teach Against Circumcision?
by Jon Sherman
Does Paul teach against circumcision and thus teach against God’s law? Galatians 2:3-5 Yet not even Titus who was with me, being a Greek, was compelled to be circumcised. And this occurred because of false brethren secretly brought in (who came in by stealth to spy out our liberty which we have in Christ Jesus, that they might bring us into bondage), to whom we did not yield submission even for an hour, that the truth of the gospel might continue with you. The issue of circumcision is perhaps the most complicated subject to study in the new testament. This is not really b ...

Galatians 3:10-13 – Is God’s Law a Curse or Did We Curse Ourselves?
by Jon Sherman
There are many who read Galatians 3:10-13 and conclude that God’s law is a curse and anyone that follows God’s law is under that curse. But is that really what Paul is stating? According to scripture, how is a curse related to God’s law and what places us under it? Why are we cursed? Are we cursed for following God’s law, or not following God’s law (sin)? If our Savior takes away the curse of the law does He take away the whole law (blessings too) or just the curse of God’s law? To understand Paul correctly we need to be able to answer these qu ...

Galatians 3:23-25 – Was God’s Law a Schoolmaster that Has Been Abolished at the Cross?
by Jon Sherman
Is it the "law of sin and death" that we are under before faith, or the "law of God?" Which law brings us to our Savior as the schoolmaster, the "law of sin" or simply the "law of God?" Have you ever asked that question or just always assumed it was the "law of God" in Galatians 3:23-25 because that is what you were told? How can we use the verses surrounding these verses (context) to help answer those questions? We will examine all of this in detail. First a brief overview of Galatians is required. Galatians is perhaps the single letter of Paul that is the cause of the most confusion surroun ...

Galatians 4:21-23 – Do We Place Our Trust in God or in Man?
by Brad Scott
I am often told that this allegory definitively shows that God’s law is bondage, and is not only to be set aside, but is to be cast out, and those that desire to obey the law of God are the children of Hagar. But is that the background of what Paul is teaching? The first four and a half chapters of this book have been teaching us that redemption and sonship are not acquired by obedience to God’s law, or any law, for that matter. We have already established that many times over. The focus on inheritance, the seed, and relationship precedes the allegory of Hagar and Sa ...

Galatians 5:1 – Is the Law of God “Bondage” or "Freedom?"
by Jon Sherman
When taken at face value, this question appears rather odd. How could anything of God be bondage? Would God have given us "bondage" and then stated that if we obey it we are blessed, and if we disobey it, we fall under the curse (second death)(Deut. 11:26-29)? Do we find any verse in all of Scripture that says the Law of God is bondage? No we do not. In fact, we find the opposite. Ps 119:44 So shall I keep thy law continually for ever and ever. Ps 119:45 And I will walk at liberty: for I seek thy precepts. Ps 119:47 And I will delight myself in thy commandments, which I have loved. Ja 1: ...

Galatians 5:18 - Does the “Spirit of God” Actually Lead Us Away from the “Law of God?”
by Jon Sherman
What is the Spirit's relationship to the "law of God?" Is the Spirit of God against the "law of God" or actually "another law?" When Paul uses the term "under the law" which law is he referring to? Does it matter? Can't we just assume he is referring to the "law of God?" What about context? What does the "works of the flesh" (context-verse 19) have to do with the "law" Paul is referring to in verse 18? Is the "works of the flesh" related to the Spirit of God or the law Paul is referring to? What does Paul mean that the Spirit is contrary or against the flesh (context - verse 17)? What does the ...

Galatians 5:4 – Is Observing God’s Law Falling From Grace?
by Jon Sherman
Is following the Law of God opposing to grace? What did Paul mean when he accused the Galatians of falling from grace? What did they do? How does our Savior become of no effect? Ga 5:4 Christ is become of no effect unto you, whosoever of you are justified by the law; ye are fallen from grace. Since Galatians is a letter , not a single verse written with a specific context, we should determine and that for our understanding. Galatians were being falsely taught to keep God’s Law for salvation. False teachers (“Circumcision Party” - Ga 2:7-12; 5:12 and “Works of Law&rd ...
